I think the "SP" indicates "surge" voltage rating. I would just replace with a terminal strip and some radial lead modern electrolytics.

Would anybody know where I can get a Sams Photofax or service Manual for this Magnavox Astro-Sonic Model # 1RP615 It also has the Micro-Matic model W603-18-02 Record Changer in it.

Thanks for any Help

Neither number is in the Smas index - Magnavox is usually listed by chassis number, on the amp and /or tuner. Changers were usually V-M.

R2050100 and R2051300 are in folder 809-6 - that's probably it. It may list the folder for the changer once you find it. Here's my posting on where to find Photofacts... http://www.audiokarma.org/forums//showthread.php?t=82521

I could be wrong, but I believe that the Micro-Matic is a Maganavox version of the "COLLARO CONQUEST" changer. There's info about it here: http://mypage.iu.edu/~lrobins/collaro.htm They're supposed to be one of the best changers as I understand it, they automaticly detect record size and reject at a constant speed regardless of turntable speed. BTW, I have a AstroSonic console of similar vintage that I'd make someone a great deal on... it's currently in my dining room and has to go!

I think you are right mine does tap the edge of the record.

Yup. Always thought that was so cool. Many also muted the signal from the cartridge during the change cycle.

You're absolutely correct, sometime in the early 60's or late 50's Magnavox bought Collaro. The early ones sensed record size by a small finger that was located just to the left of the balance arm. Then they came out with the changer that the tone arm tapped the edge of the record to sense the size of the record, the tone arm sits down on the record about 1/4 inch in from where it was stopped, so if you came up with an 8 1/2 inch record it could play it just fine.

Around 1970 they cheapened up the changer and eliminated the second drive wheel that ran the changer mechanism. This changer still senses the size by tapping the record but the cycling cam has three grooves for 7, 10, and 12 inch records and arm sets down according to which groove is lined up by the record tap. On these changers the changer mechanism is ran off a gear around the center turntable bearing.

IMHO the early ones that sense record size by tapping the edge of the record and have a separate idler/drive wheel running directly off the motor are just about the best record changer used of the period. Very early Magnavox's before Collaro used Webster-Chicago and a few portables can be found with VM changers. There is a rare portable that uses the RCA 45 RPM changer.

I wish I had a dollar for every one of these changers I've worked on, about the only problems we had was due to hardened grease and dirt causing bearings and pivot points to lockup, and idler wheels.

I bought all the Magnavox service manuals from my former employer when he retired and closed up shop so I'm pretty well stocked up on service manuals if anyone needs a copy of one.

Randy set me up with the Collaro literature that he has, and I cured the intermittent "NO REJECT" problems that my 1962 Maggie console had. It was all due to dried up lube. It works great.

Playing a load of 78's these days.

Randy I've noticed how helpful and knowledgable you've been , if I can find my Chassis and TT #s do you think it's possible you could send some copies of the service manuals, or where to get them ? Oh and where the heck can I find a Maggie/Excelite 4 in 1 tool ?? Thanks Norman Dayan [email protected] p.s. I think you already replied to my request once already but I inadvertendly deleted your e-mail it went into my junk file automatically by mistake Thanks again

I have the Magnavox Service Manuals for your set. They are complete with circuit descriptions. Since I retired I no longer have the great deal on making copies I once had so it may take me a little while to get them copied. PM your mailing address so I can send them to you.

Handi tools are hard to find, I've got one and I've also got the Magnavox tool set that was made by xcelite but is branded Magnavox and includes the forked end driver to remove the tuner assembles from TV's and both of the inverted pal nut wrenches for removing the nuts around the stereo control shafts so the bezel can be removed.

A workaround to get the inverted pal nuts off is to use a nut that will fit in the pal nut, since the pal nut is very shallow enough of the nut will stick up so you can get a socket on it and remove it.
