I'm 3 years late to the game on this 2003 release, but I watched it today for the 1st time. I thought it was an excellent movie. The acting was very good, and it had some of the best sound effects I've heard since The Matrix.

Sean Connery was good as always, and the surprise for me was Stuart Townsend as "Dorian Gray". He reminded me of Johnny Depp, only better. Shane West (Tom Sawyer) and Peta Wilson (Mina Harker) were also superb in their roles.

An added bonus was that it was a movie I watched with my kids, and there was nothing unsuitable for them. That is a rarity these days.

I honestly don't remember this one getting much press when it was in theaters. How did it rate? And what do you guys think of it?

I have the DVD and throw it on every now and then. Longevity is good on this flick :thmbsp:

It got panned pretty heavily. I saw it in the theater, maybe the last movie I've been to- the fx were excellent. The rest of it was kinda meh.

I thought it was pretty entertaining. I've always liked Connery except for Darby O'Gill :)

I enjoyed this movie. Just when you thought something was farfetched, they managed to explain it. Entertaining.

This one got beat on pretty hard by the reviewers. IF you are a fan of the story genre, and IF you like a movie with visual "kick", this is a great flick!

And BTW, JD - I watched it for the first time about 3 months ago, and I thought it was great! Good individual performances, great FX, I didn't need any more story to hold it together.

I thought there was was going to be something about Robert Fripp in this thread.

When I saw it in the theater I thought it was laugh-out-loud awful; horrible effects, no discernable plot, totally over the top. But I saw it on DVD a little while back and the 2nd time thru I thought it was merely bad. :banana:

No offense meant. I was entertained by it. And I agree Townsend was better than I had expected (although no Johnny Depp by any stretch of the imagination :no: :thumbsdn: ).

Took my 10-year old to see it when it came out. Kept my mouth shut on how I felt about it. After the film was over he told me he didn't think it was very good. This film had all the elements of a potentially great flick and few of them worked IMO.

I agree with Rob - overblown is a great description - It reminded me of "Dick Tracy" in that respect (although not nearly as bad a movie as DT). I just couldn't get into it (but I'm not a huge comic book fan - which I read somewhere it was based upon).

Better than I expected, for sure.

I enjoyed the fact it was set in a long past time, unlike so many modern superhero action films, like the horrible Fantastic Four, or the painful Spiderman movies, or the enjoyable X-Men series.

I expected an action flick, and got just that. But the added bonus of the artistic elements, literary charactors, was a refreshing addition to the experience.

I didn't expect an oscar-worthy film.

Just an enjoyable, interesting approach on the action-adventure genre.

That's what I felt I got.

Yep, like Deli said, I wasn't expecting "Citizen Kane" and had an enjoyable time watching it.
Then again, I love Sean Connery films. "The Man Who Would Be King" is a personal fave :yes:

My reaction as well, awkward terribly insecure adolescence dragged out hour after hour along with those cg flying/leaping sequences, ugh.

Haven't seen loeg, based on + reactions here, I'll probably pick it up some day

Weird...I thought the Spiderman films were superb, as did 90% of the movie critics in America. Certainly the effects were far better than LoEG, especially with respects to Spiderman 2. Oh, well- it would be boring if everyone liked the same things. :yes:
