Word out is that Keith Richards will play Jack's pop in the 3rd one.

They actually filmed parts 2 and 3 at the same time.

I really felt ashamed I got duped into seeing this.

Was it terrible?

But was it good?

Not at all.

Were there two action scenes involving rolling objects and action fighting and attempts at laughs, that were more than fairly similiar?

Yes.

Did it seem like the same type of scene re-used after a mild re-write?

Maybe a half dozen. Even eight of them, maybe. But no more than ten, for sure.

Yes. But barely. Just barely...

If you blink, will you get confused or lose your way, at least momentarily, due to the dozens of nonsensical tiny plot twists?

Will you get frustrated over this?

Grrr.

Will you care the next day?

No.

I found this film to be incredibly, unnecessarily long, it was easy to lose your way or get confused at times with lots of small, insignificant, but confusing twists, there was lots of unneeded scenes, lots of filler, no real suspenseful action for more than a few minutes here or there, lots of poor gags, lots of mediocre acting, lots of mediocre dialogue, and as people were leaving the theater, many were complaining how much they thought it, well, to put it blatantly, and in many of their own words, how it sucked.

I think the biggest kick in the crotch ws it really felt like it didn't end, when it in fact did- it felt like it stopped in mid-story. And of course the ending was the clear giveaway there was a sequel, a part three- it was even included as part of the dialogue, so you were clear on it, no need to question it. At all.

It wasn't even excuseable as the Star Wars films, or even Lord of the Rings was, where they actually left you feeling that at least there was some resolution in the middle films, that gave 'em closure, gave 'em a sense of being able to stand on their own legs, with merit.

No. Not this film.

It felt like a 4-hour episode of Baywatch. Except you were only allowed to see the first 2 hours, 40 minutes or so.

All this stuff would be fine & dandy, if I were 10 and hadn't seen it all a thousand times before! I am so tired of paying hard-earned cash for an inferior hollywood product.

I wish hollywood would adopt the old country/western axiom about "all frosting and no cake". It goes something like, "if a song can't be performed with a single voice and a guitar, it just ain't much of a song". If they would write so that the story could be communicated on a stage with a dozen straight back chairs, and a kitchen table (remember 12 Angry men?), when they poured on all the gravy, the story would carry itself, and the gravy would be just that... gravy. Lately most of hollywood's output seems to be all gravy, and no meat and potatoes.

Regarding Johnny Depps pirate makeup.....

Whats up with the eye-liner? I seriously doubt real pirates actually wore eye makeup.

I did go to Emerson college, and got a film degree from them.

But that degree was in film studies.

I haven't gone to see a movie at a movie theater in almost three years now. Did I miss anything important?

If you go into this movie expecting only frosting, you'll enjoy it...although the knife & fork joke was really stupid. While reasonably enjoyable to watch, Davey Jones was nowhere near as good a villain as Barbossa.

I'm just very glad that Geoffrey Rush will act in the third one. He made the first movie for me. And Chow Yun Fat is in the third one! Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!! That's terrific.

I haven't seen it yet but will.
I'm not expecting "Citizen Kane" or Olivier.
I love the first one as just fun entertainment and expect nothing more from the second.

We go to the 1.50 movie place, which playes the same movies as the 10 dollar movie place in the same mall. Only a few months later. Haven't seen a full price movie since Jurrassic Park 3. Oh, the old theater may not have staggered platform seating and be all new and stuff. But the difference in price lets me go out to the food court and buy lunch for the whole family and still have money to shop a bit. I would love to pay full price for a movie, but they gotta give me one worth seeing.
Of course by the time I rent it on DVD it is too late to pay full price, even if it is the greatest movie on Earth. I can live with that.

If you really do enjoy cinema, going to see a movie in a crowded theater full of noisy teenagers and kiddies sort of spoils the mood.

I got duped into seeing it Saturday afternoon by my daughters. I told them to find a time and place to see "Tokyo Drift" but when we got to the theatre it was "Pi Rats".

OMG, it was gross and boring and tedious and completely unengaging.

The only good thing about it was the air conditioning.

Maybe the clothes too - the dapper costumes of the bureaucrats - love that 18th century Beau Brummel look. The soccer moms in the audience in their summer skimpies weren't too bad either.

I found a lot of similiarities with Empire Strikes Back -

Father giving son 5 lashes while fish face looks on while having an orgasim (darth beating down luke while the emperor looked on)

ending scene (han going into the deep freeze)

going to the witch doctor (luke going to see yoda)

the list goes on and on, nothing that hasn't been done before.

I actually enjoyed this one better than the first Pirates.The first one kept going back to the same locations.I loved that beastie!I think thats the first time Ive ever seen such a real looking sea serpent in a movie.And the sword fight!Wow!
But I keep imagining what this would have been like with a young Jackie Chan.Or a young Burt Lancaster(Crimson Pirate,anyone?)

THE CRIMSON PIRATE!! sooo good!! absolutely classic

"The Empire Strikes Back" was a much better movie! I know, I worked on it at Industrial Light and Magic. The explosions were my contribution.

Funny but both my daughters (14 and 10) like Pirates 2. I will give them credit for targeting their audience.

I also noted a number of production shortcuts. On a number of outdoor shots, they didn't shade and fill the lighting very well at all so they were overly contrasty.

You can also see next season's amusement park rides in some of the scenes.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm glad to see this review. Now I can just sit back and take the movie for what it's worth - sounds like mostly a special effects orgy. I can deal with that.

This all makes sense for the middle film of a trilogy. Those are rarely very much more than filler between the first and last work: a necessary connection, but usually a boring one.

I just took a look at rottentomatoes.com. "Rotten" rating from reviewers, but viewers seemed to like it. Probably a lot of them were in the teen crowd.

I saw this over the weekend, not bad, and at least they didn't totally blow it like many sequels are prone to. I will agree that this movie is not "deep" and if you go to this type of film expecting more than superficial entertainment you will be disappointed. At 2:30 long if you don't enjoy action films without a very focused plot it will seem like an enternity. I saw it knowing that it was mostly going to be a story about nothing in particular and thought it was entertaining, nothing more or nothing less. Most of the entertainment value of this film are the characters themselves and the special effects.

Mark Steyn dissed "Pirates" in his review. He entitled the review "Plumbing the Depps."

Funny thing is, it's killing everything else at the movie theaters.

'Twas quite dissapointing if you went expecting anything other than mindless summer entertainment. Wait I take that back, it was dissapointing regardless. The entire movie was an excuse to make a third movie. 2.5 hours of filler with no real coherent plot, or explanation given as to why everybody was frantically searching for what they were searching for.

The only redeeming part: the return of my second favorite character from the first movie... you know who I'm talking about...

It's a summer movie.

Movie theatres are a great place to take a nap, this one kept me awake. Nice effects and story is not too stupid.

Just went and saw the 3rd installment. Same goofy plot complications and the fight scenes got a bit old. But entertaining at a lighter level, just the same. "Disneywood" at its finest! Of course it also left the door open for a 4th film. (Of course, anything else would have been bad business!)

Just saw PofC III and the plot is way too confusing with all the double-crossing and double-siper-secret-double-crossing. The movie just plain wasn't as much fun as the original. And of course, they open the door for a 4th. Way too much computer animation. Yuk.

Agree. Saw #3, wished that I had waited until the DVD was available to rent.

I dunno. I went with the whole family opening night at 8 PM and had a good time. Folks were dressed up like pirates and my girls were all geeked up for the show.

Like I said earlier, this ain't Kubrick or Bergman, folks, but I find it entertaining and fun. The first though was the best; I can watch that anytime it's on and enjoy it.

I've just seen POTC111. IMO It's nowhere like as bad as the reviewers made out but what's the deal with colour these days? It's as if film makers have rediscovered sepia tint and forgotten everything that came after. And while I'm at it (why stop a good rant?), why do so many American studios transplant their films to the USA? From when Alfred Hitchcock first cooked `The Birds' right up to that gadawfull remake of `The Wicker Man', it's as if they cannot get their heads round the idea that making a film set in its original location, or even a studiuo lot that looks like the original location, makes sense. I mean, if Disney had made `Lord of the Rings', would they have put Middle Earth in New England, and Mordor just to the north of Detroit? Actually that's a horrible thought. We'd have ended up with Tinkerbell guiding Frodo all the way to the Big Rock Candy Mountain......

Iand Mordor just to the north of Detroit?

Actually, downtown Detroit and the industrial near area by the bridge would need to be cleaned up a bit to pass for Mordor..........

I see where the differences of opinion are coming from. On one hand, this is a Disney pirate movie. So what do people expect? On the other hand, this is a top-billing cast and crew. So apparently, many people expect a lot. I think we got the expected result of this kind of set-up: Somewhere between a typical Disney movie, and something a little more...inspired. I was satisfied with it.

...why do so many American studios transplant their films to the USA?...Well, that's an easy enough one to answer: familiarity. I mean, if the French were to remake Planet of the Apes, I would fully expect them to replace the Statue of Liberty with the Eiffel Tower. Or if the Brits were to remake It's A Wonderful Life, I would fully expect them to use London Bridge in the opening scene.
