Caught the poll in this forum, and enjoyed reading everyone's comments. It got me wondering: has anyone heard what might be coming next for the franchise? Seems like the plot in the last movie closed the door on any future TNG movies (and the revenue from the movie didn't meet expectations either, which probably not only closes but SLAMS the door on any future TNG movies).

So, what has anyone heard?

What I've heard is that the entire ST franchise has quite bluntly run out of gas (or is that dilithium crystals?). They're making a steady income just showing episodes of past series on cable. It's not that there's "no" demand, just "insufficient" demand for new product with everything that's been put out there already over the years.

The following was from 2004...so still no news on the upcoming Star Trek projects.

After over a year of silence on the future of the STAR TREK feature film franchise, producer Rick Berman has finally dropped the first hints of a new theatrical project for the franchise. The news comes in the new issue of Dreamwatch magazine, just coming out in the UK.

Speaking in issue #117, Berman confirms for the first time that he is now developing a STAR TREK feature film project: "I am involved in the very early stages of what could be the next STAR TREK movie," reveals Berman, in an excerpt provided by Dreamwatch. "It's something I will be producing with two other producers."

Unwilling to offer many details he cryptically describes it as "a prequel" without any further elaboration. The names of his producing cohorts will have to remain unknown for now, as well. This follows a report earlier this week from Dark Horizons that Paramount may be working on a project the site described as "Starfleet Command." Coincidentially, former TREK producer Harve Bennett (STAR TREKs II-VI) revealed recently that several years ago he had pitched a Starfleet Academy-based STAR TREK movie concept.



On the television front, while the future of their first series remains in limbo, Berman confirms that he is developing a non-STAR TREK sci-fi series with partner Brannon Braga. Both Berman and Braga have development deals with Paramount. If a new series begins development in earnest, TrekWeb insiders suggest Berman and/or Braga might take a reduced role in a fourth season of ENTERPRISE, though this is entirely speculation.

Well, apparently they are working on a new movie, but it is VERY early in pre-production. JJ Abrams is writing/producing/directing it, or some combination of those. Probably 2008 before we will see that.
The biggest stuff is on the fan produced ST stuff, all based around TOS characters. Of course, Season 4 is in production with the New Voyages team hard at work there. At the speed they are going, they should have all 26 episodes done by the end of the century. I gotta say, the production values, especially the special effects are getting pretty good. Nice to see the support they are getting from the original cast. Walter Koenig (Chekov) just finished an episode, and George Takei (Sulu) is signed up for the next one. Lot of TOS guests seem to be showing up too
Then another group at www.startrekofgodsandmen.com is making a web mini-series, starring Nichelle Nicholls (Uhuru) and Walter Koenig and a ton of other Star Trek stars, and directed by Tim Russ (Tuvok). Apparently, takes place in the Enterprise-B time. No clue when this will be released.
So Star Trek is alive and well, regardless of how much crap Paramount has been turning out over the last few years....

It's gonna be a prequel. The latest rumor per videoeta.com is that rick berman got william shatners blessing for matt damon to star as young captain kirk.

Well, It was dead, and I think it would have stayed dead if J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) wasn't a fan.

Give it a rest. ST in all its various iterations, has had an almost 40-year run. How many of the original cast are gone now, James Doohan, DeForest Kelley, maybe some others...Let it go out on top like it is now...IMHO, none of the "Treks" ever "jumped the shark"...Would any of us really wanna see that ?

If you reely need a 'Trek fix'...there are some people doing some new versions of the original series...

its all done without big money involved and some big manes are jumping in on the bandwagon..maybe in time ....well...ya never know...

There are two episodes out so far...the first one was pretty low budget...but the second one isnt too bad ...

I think that in the next Star Trek, Patrick Stewart ought to go back in time and join forces with Rocky Balboa to defeat Jaws.

Which will be okay, because by then Jaws will be wearing dentures :tongue:

I've only DL'd one episode, the one with William Windom. I was actually quite surprised at how good it was for an all volunteer effort. If anything fresh comes from the franchise, it will be from the fan-based efforts.

From what I heard, its going to be about the first meeting between Kirk and Spock.

I grew up in the mid-70's,and all my friends would talk about was "will they bring Star Trek back?"First you had the movies,then TNG,and then boatloads of spinoffs.I mean,even those hundred dollar full season dvd sets sold like hotcakes.
I think the smart money would be to let the whole franchise die for 10 years,and then bring out another movie.Give everyone a chance to miss it first.
