I was surfing the net and found out that the BBC has resurrected the Doctor Who series. Of course the local PBS station in Cleveland isn't showing it, but it is supposed to start on the Sci-Fi channel in April! I was able to download two episodes and I watched one last night. I was really impressed. The new Doctor is very young and his personality is similar to Tom Baker's Doctor. Say goodbye to cheesy special effects, and hello to CGI! The aliens looked great, and the inside of the Tardis is very different and cool. Sort of a high tech mess. I am really looking forward to seeing more episodes. The first one was a complete story, not in installlments. I don't know if they will all be that way, but I hope so. Guess I now have a reason to hook my surround processor back up. :banana:

I haven't seen it, but I saw all the advertisements for it...

We don't subscribe to the tier of our cable system that has the Sci-Fi channel, but our gym does...

So I probably won't get to watch any of the shows, or at least, not in their entirety. :no:

They've already shown a few eposodes on Sci-Fi the other night. I was never into Dr. Who so I just passed it by after a few minutes.

It seems that the resurrect Dr. Who every year or so. Nothing beats the original unfortunately.

Tom Baker is still my favorite doctor, although the new one is growing on me... I'll have to wait and see I guess.

I have to agree that my favorite Doctor is Tom Baker but I'm enjoying this Dr Who. When I see it on, the channel flipping is stopping there. Now, if they'd just bring back Red Dwarf... :D

I've seen all three of the new episodes on Sci-Fi (new ep. this Friday) and they are all very good. They maintain the "feel" of the original series while having a modern beat to them. A few times when a scene would start, I swear I was watching a Tom Baker original....very subtle.

Obviously the biggest improvement is in the effects dept. They are rather good now and very believable. The stories, while modern, still have a campiness to them. But that is what makes Doctor Who what it is, IMO.

I really like the new doctor. I liked his work as the baddie from "Gone is 60 seconds" and "28 days later". I think he brings a great synergy of curiosity, cluelessness, brilliance and heroism all in one. But don't get too used to him. They are already filming season two and there is a new doctor....David Tennant (kinda looks like Ryan Seacrest). http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/

His sidekick, Rose (Billie Piper) is easy on the eyes but a little too hesitant at times for me. Bring back a Leela type with lots of gusto....that would be great.

But, as always, Tom Baker will always be THE Doctor in my mind. "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" is my favorite episode....Brilliant.

I've seen the first 3 episodes. They aren't bad, it has a similar feel to the old series. We are a year behind, they are on seson 2 in the UK, with a different doctor (David Tennent), but keeping Rose (Billie Piper). A third season has been slated. I don't know if we'll see seasons 2 or 3, it will depend on the ratings. The discs for season 1 will be out in the US this July, for those interested.

FYI- Tom Baker, clearly the best Doctor ever (and the one who many mistake for the original), was NOT the original, he was the FOURTH Doctor. Frankly, I always thought that the First and Second doctors totally sucked. :thumbsdn: Jon Pertwee, the third Doctor was merely OK, as was Peter Davidson (Doctor #5). However, I did actually enjoy Colin Baker (#6) quite a bit. :thmbsp: The 7th Doctor was decent too, although his name escapes me.

This newest Doctor technically is the 9th Doctor (or 10th, if you count that outrageously horrible movie that inspired the original series), as there was a Doctor Who Made for TV movie in the '90s which featured the 8th doctor (the shortest lived doctor ever).

Both my wife and I have watched the newest Doctor on sci-fi, and have enjoyed it so far. But the plots seem to be just as cheesy as ever. However, if you don't minde a little cheese with your wine, then this newest Doctor shows some genuine promise to be one of the greats. :thmbsp: So far he seems to be the most cheerful doctor since Tom Baker, and he seems to have a quirky enough personality to be entertaining too. Although I am going to be seriously annoyed if they make the "boyfriend" character into another companion. :thumbsdn: He is just plain pathetic. :puke: Can anybody say "Jar Jar Binks"???

I tried to like the first two Doctors, but the shows were just so incredibly boring, I really could not stand to watch more than a few minutes... But I did like most of his later incarnations (especially the two Bakers).

Good to see The Doctor back on the little screen! Just watched two hours on Sci-Fi last night, and I think having ANY Doctor at this point is a good thing! I do miss watching the old ones, out here there was still a PBS affiliate showing 1-3 hours every Saturday, complete with Klingon-costumed volunteers manning the pledge-drive phones.

Now to the soapbox: :nono: Tom Baker will always be The Doctor to me. Colin Baker was, IMHO, the reason for the first cancellation back in the '80's. Much of the Hartnell/Troughton years, along with a Dalek story are LOST :tears: . This is yet another venue to tell the story of how just weeks before the Beeb decided on preserving the old series, they erased, burned, and dumpstered much of the first two Doctors' collected episodes, and did in some early Pertwee as well. ANY footage is still being sought to restore these great old episodes, so support this effort by buying all the re-issue DVDs you can, even the DREADFUL Peter Cushing movies, there are two on a disk called DALEKMANIA (I think, my ex got all the Doctor media collection).

I saw one or two segments of that last Patrick Troughton episode of which you speak, and your right, it was the best episode of his that I ever saw. Wasn't that the one that got him banished to earth? I'd love to see that entire episode.

I've read others who blamed the failing of the franchise on Collin Baker, but I'm not sure that I buy it. Remember the series had either two or three seasons with the 7th Doctor following CB's reign. Tom Baker was a very hard act to follow, so all the following doctors were lacking comapred to him. I guess that I liked the exceedingly excentric nature of Collin's character.

I think that the series had just become too stale, and that for whatever reason, that the BBC decided that thier money was better spent elsewhere. Remember, Dr Who was a relatively expensive production with all of the elaboate sets, and such...

And while suporting the series is admerable, there is NO WAY that i will ever buy that atrocious movie with Peter Cushing. I caught that by accident on late-night TV once. I couldn't even sit through it back when I was really into the Doctor! It was HORRIBLE!!! :puke:

That was Jon Pertwee. The best thing about him, I thought, was The Master. I didn't like the fact that he was stuck on Earth.

Ok, who else here is totally relieved that the Doctor didn't take that stupid boyfriend character as another assitant in the latest episode?

Here, here. I was very relieved and I actually liked the way they tied up that part of the story. Having that boyfriend around would've made everything uncomfortable.

Now with earth left behind I can't wait to see things really open up. The Daleks and the Master are on their way....

It's interesting: It looks like they may be taking the show in a different direction with some new authority who has replaced the Timelords. How do some of you old time whovians react to this?

This is one of the best stories of the 2005 series. Very imaginative! The Time Police? I think they are from Earth of the future. Since the Timelords are dead, it would be good for them to bring the Time Police in on a few stories. Should be interesting.

I agree. This was far and away the best episode of the new series so far. And I can't help but wonder if the Doctor is going to be getting himself into trouble with this new time authority like he was regularly doing with the Timelords.... :scratch2:

I'm resurrecting another old thread because I can't sleep, and I'm sitting here reading old threads. I was just watching old dr. who episodes on youtube, and I realized I had forgotten how much I liked this show. I liked the first 5 doctors (particularly 1-3), didn't like #6, #7 was ok. #3 was my favorite, particularly when he was stuck on Earth, and had that old yellow car (I don't remember what it was), and couldn't get his tardis working. How much of the old shows are out on DVD now? I've never looked at the new ones, I've avoided it because it seems everytime they redo one of these old sci-fi series they can't get it right.

All I can say is Dr. Who rocks...This last season will be out on DVD sometime in Nov. I have the other 3 and can't wait for this one...I don't know if the Christmas Special the one with the Titanic and Kylie Minogue guest starring will be on it. I hope so as the previous DVDs always included the Xmas specials.
