Thought I would start a thread on ugly color sets from the 60's!

You should have seen the house that it came out of, All the furniture was that gross color french provincial stuff with Rust color deep pile shag carpet! Only reason I saved it is because it is a remote set and so unusual. Fortunately, It has been the only one I have seen like it!:saywhat:

Captainmoody, I actually kind of like it... Especially the speaker grille cloth. Now I'm not actually saying I'd want to display it in MY living room, but I do think it's pretty neat-o.

As far as "never seeing another like it", I missed one almost exactly like it, in perfect working condition, at a Sun City, AZ estate sale. ($10!) Also, my aunt (who worked at Detrola) had one until the late 80s in her French Provincial living room. I found the generic-cube-of-Korean-plastic that replaced it to be far more offensive.

I think that French style was a Magnavox specialty, at least into the 70s. I've never seen another brand in this style.

Believe it or not I had a Zenith round tube in the same style cabinet, I trash picked it in '78. Sold it for 50.00 after changing the horiz out tube. Have never seen one since. Like you said, It seemed Magnavox made more of those than anyone else. I keep it because it is so unique and actually works great still. Also have the original 8 function remote for it too.
Most likely, Those sets got tossed in the 70's when tastes changed. They just didn't fit in anywhere.

Captainmoody, in my opinion there is nothing at all wrong with the looks of your 36-year-old Magnavox. It's not ugly; the cabinet styling is simply out of date by today's standards. Tastes in and styles of furniture and everything else change with time, as other members of this forum have stated. Only two television manufacturers today (that I know of, anyhow), RCA and Zenith, still have large consoles in their product lines--and they cost an arm and a leg. These days, many folks having a TV, stereo, VCR and perhaps a cable box put their equipment in entertainment-center cabinets, which match the decor of their living rooms, to simulate the looks of a console installation.

Many, many perfectly good televisions and even the occasional stereo console are put out for the trash every week simply because the cabinet styling does not fit in with the decor of the owner's living room or family room. (This quite often happens after a remodeling job). I am reminded of the old story about the man who bought a new car and sold his old one (which still looked and ran like new) simply because the ashtray was full.

If your Magnavox TV still works well, I'd say hold on to it. They don't make them like that anymore; goodness knows we'll never see the likes of them again. Some day, who knows--that set might become a collectors' item, if only for the styling of the cabinet.

Hi Jeff,
I intend to keep the set because, As I stated before it is unique and is a remote set. I never liked that color on a tv cabinet though, Even when it was in style.
But being a stickler for originality, I will leave it the way it is.
Also put in a new picture with the remote this time.

All I have to say about this styling thing is that its a darned good thing International Harvester Corporation never got into making television sets! :)
