Okay, so I gotta vent about an estate sale company I HATE, and wonder if you guys have run into the same thing? This company usually does tag sales in the "better" parts of town, but the prices are priced waaaay to high and they are "snooty" and I feel like giving the workers a "smack". So today I go to my first sale of the year. The house is in an older part of town, but the house is a 70's custom built home. The owners must have had money as the house was beautiful, altho ALL original, so if people don't like 70's design it's gonna be a redo. What turned me off is that the furniture was all "high-end" leather, glass & chrome pieces from an overpriced store here, Elan. When I saw the prices on the furniture I knew it wasn't gonna be good. I went off to look for tv's and saw that the people bought "higher-end" stuff from "back in the day" They loved SOny and there is a set I saw I'll get to later, but in the living-room, I saw a Zenith from the dreaded picture tube years I think. It was a 25" 1993 Advanced System 3, in a cabinet style I have been looking for. The tall all oak with the 2 shelves with glass doors on the bottom. Set was on and had a surprisingly perfect picture. I walk over to see how much it was priced at and they had it at $300.00!!!! WTF????? $300.00 for a 13 year old console set??? The house was too packed for me to even bother making a rude comment. I was gonna put in a $40.00 bid just to piss em off. The Sony I saw was a cool looking 13" Remote with a speaker on the top that said "Mega-Bass" and it had a built in FM radio. I'm gonna guess it was from the late 80's. I didn't get it as it was $50.00. Anyway has anyone seen one of those SOny's? And was 93 the "bad year" for Zenith? Hope you guys don't run into overpriced sales that often, but would love to see some postings if you have, along with comments on the 2 sets I saw.

I have seen the overpriced estate sales, in fact there are some estate sale vendors I don't patronize because of the way they do business....however, there are some very fair estate sale companies here too.
The key to work these sales is to go on the first day (if possible) and scan the sale for good stuff. If the prices are fair and you really want something then you can just get it. If they have exhorbitant prices on something like an old TV, the trick is to wait till the last day toward the end of the sale, and they will usually deal at a fair price. If they won't, they are either just nasty people, are running some kind of scheme, or are naive about the marketplace and will be out of business soon.

I don't see why more auctions of estates aren't done these days. When I was a kid I could buy Zenith TV's and old radios etc for 50 cents or a dollar at auctions as these were absolute auctions where everything was sold no matter what price. With an auction, prices are fair, everything is sold that day and there is no junk left over to deal with afterward for the family.

About the Zenith yes 93 was a bad CRT year. My Grandma has a 92 or 93 Zenith and had the bad CRT replaced later in the 90's though, and the set is still going today. The set you saw may have had a replacement CRT in it or was hardly ever used...as every one of these except for my Grandma's I've seen have weak crt's.

The best thing, I think, to do with those w-a-y overpriced tv sets is to leave them there...let them EAT those sets (or pay someone out of their profits to haul them away). I do envy you guys with these sales...auctions are how things are done around here, the only trouble being that if there is something good you have to wait around half the day. But as Chad said, when it sells it sells cheap.

Waiting for it's date with a garbage compactor(should be tomorrow) It looks like a 31"-35", and is in a big,upright style cabinet. I NEVER liked the digital sets, don't really have the room, and didn't want to mess with it.

I'd love to have the main digital board to save my Bose sound Zenith.Too bad I'm so far away.Figures one to cannibalize is in the trash so far away. :pity:
