I have owned two of those; one I bought new at Adray's for a very reduced price when it had sat there 6 years unsold. The other I bought used and damaged from an abusive Mideastern prince whose father had given it to him along with a new Ferarri and a $1,000,000 penthouse for his 16th birthday. That one was badly hacked up, and I paid $500 in about '86. TV collector Eric S has that one in New Hampshire now. I think this eBay one could be the Adray's set that I once owned. I sold it to a fellow in Sherman Oaks in '88. It was missing the plackard, as this one is. And it was missing the video rack as this one is. Too much coincidence! And it is true that the MSRP was $10,000 in 1981, and that it weighs 510 lbs 7 oz. I was given the figure of 200 shipped to the USA, and 1000 total built. The owners manual was pigskin bound, and the 2nd remote was also tamo ashwood.

I would bid on it, but the CRT is $4300.00 at Andrews so I don't suppose I'll be ordering it!

I have to admit that I'm watching this auction.Have emailed the seller as to the working condition.It's apparent that the CRT is shot,but I just love the looks of this set.I faintly remember seeing one and cringing at the price,but what an amazing piece of craftsmanship.How good or bad was the picture on these sets? I have given some thought of gettng it just for the looks of the set,but to get the crt replaced or repaired plus the fact of driving to L.A. and back.What happened to the two sets you had?

I paid $3500 for the new one... I think I ran across the receipt a month ago.

The prince was nothing more than a drunkard, really. He told me that he had been drinking, and used a samurai sword to hack up the front bottom edge of the TV, and that was it. Not much of an answer, but enough for me to decide he wasn't anyone I would want to associate with. He was related to the sheik who burned his copper-roofed mansion to the ground for no reason on the corner of Alpine and Sunset Bl in Beverly Hills in the early 80s. I don't remember the name, but it was the same. (and equally as nutty).

The picture was quite nice! The chassis is based on a CVM-3000 monitor, and has a really rugged power supply and lots of advanced features that most 1981 sets didn't have. I too am watching it, but I eMailed the lady again today to say that I can't bid because I have no place to put it. She is interested in getting it fixed, so I might try to help her find a beat up CVM-3000 from a studio or someplace with a newer tube in it. That's only if no TV collector can buy and rescue it. The only annoyance was those electric doors. They each have independent motors and are gear-driven. There is a touch strip on the edge of each door to prefent finger smashing. That was always being falsely tripped in the fall when there was a lot of static electricity in the air...

Of course, I could NOT had began to lift it, probably not even "teeter totter" it, into m,y van. with that much weight. But, had it been closer... I might had tried!! After all, the CRT may NOT be too bad!!

NOW-- I want to see some PICTURES-- NUDIES!! I am curious:: Sony has been known for hot chassis since the beginning (68) of their trinitron sets. Then,. in recent (last 20 or so) they had some switchers, frist, their own design, nowdays, whetever they get cheapest. SO--- does this one use a cold power supply, and is it a switcher, or did Sony actually break down and use a good ol'fashioned POWER TRANSFORMER(wouldn't make much difference in that big set, to the extra weight), as most Mfgr.s did, till the late '70's?

So-- if you can-- get some puictures, of the set, especially, the power supply, horiz, crt, and audio amp sections, and a whole-open-back shot!!

This was taken just after the fire, and the plastic CRT bezel had been ruined. You can see the cabinet just to the Left and behind the chassis. That set was not burned, and the finish on the tamo ash wood was sturdy enough to withstand the smoke and water. It came through nicely, unlike a few other sets. Note how the Sony chassis is so huge that it dwarfs the CTC-5 console directly behind it.

I don't remember the power supply too clearly, but it has an array of LARGE power transformers and a bank of T-03 case regulators. I doubt if it's a hot chassis, but I'd have to look at the print. I think it has 5 or 6 independent supplies, each with its own transformer and rectifiers & regulation. The CVM-3000 had a 3-prong plug with the chassis at earth ground. This is the same exact chassis, but with a household 2-prong line cord.

There is a guy where I just moved from that has two of those sets. Both were bought by him. They were sitting there complete. The one had the innards removed the last time I saw it. Both sets have the metal tags on them. He told me they were close to $10k each to buy new. He offered them to me and I declined. They are too huge for my taste. Two of them take up a room.
