Well, so I was watching "A Christmas Story" on my still-unconverged Sylvania 25LC105 when suddenly the volume shot up to ear-splitting level.

Even if I turned the volume all the way down, it was still terrifyingly loud.

Then just as suddenly, it went back to normal.

Any ideas? This set still has plenty of issues besides the volume--need a new convergence board, the color still doesn't sync for a while, fine-tuning is touchy, etc. But at least the other problems don't disturb the neighbors or scare the dog!

I would look for a bad connection in the grounded side of the volume pot.

Aha!

Now that I think of it, just touching the metal volume knob affected the volume. Can't remember if it made the sound louder or softer (since it happened more than 5 minutes ago...), but there was definitely a difference.

So I was acting as a ground, then? Nice to know I'm good for something ! :D

Thanks, Andy.

Possibly a crack in the carbon trail inside the pot. That carbon trail the wiper moves against to adjust the volume. If the break is near the ground end, you can get loud volume when it goes open. You would have to replace the pot. Or if you are really handy you might be able to transplant a good trail into the existing pot (if it's a hard to find combo of volume and contrast and power switch control).
