I dug this out of the Tv shop yesterday. I had to slug it out with a possum that took up residence in the back of the set. :sigh: It had a nice bed made in there and seemed rather comfortable. We engaged in hand to hand combat at first then resorted to long sticks. Was able to eventually able to make the critter see it my way. :D I believe it is an Airline 19" color set. The back is missing and the tag on front is missing also. Any guess as to what it is? SAMS number? Just thought it was interesting. Does any audiokarma member have one?

I have got a CTC 51, CTC 63, Zenith 19EC22 and this set out of the same shop.

Interesting set. Definitly a japanese set. Any original tubes in there? Something as to a clue what make it is? If it were airline or sears, it would have the name on any orignal tube, especially the CRT. Any date codes? Looks like it has an optional UHF tuner as its on the side. That set must be from around 1965 or 66.

The CRT and tubes say Sharp on them. I believe it is Japanese. The only tag on the set says made in Japan. Just thought it would be an interesting set to add to the collection.

Might it be a Bradford (W. T. Grant)? There weren't many 19" consoles, were there? A 1969 Wards catalog lists an 18" console. Didn't look like this one, though.

Am I looking at that right? A non-bonded rectangular color crt? How many of those were ever made?! I wonder, on sets like this, if the cabinets were American made, assembled here with the Japanese electronics? That would make sense to me. I have seen Sams of various 19" color consoles from Japan, with a similiar look. They were "not ready for prime time" but closing in!

The glass may just be decorative...have seen some sets with glass or plastic panels for glare reduction even when they had a crt with integral implosion protection, although on this set the glass panel seems to increase glare. My tube manual does list though some 19" rectangular tubes such as 19GYP22 and 19HQP22 which do not have implosion protection.

Looks like it might be an Airline as well as a Sharp. Was browsing through some old catalogs and found this in the 1966 Wards Christmas catalog.
Interesting that Wards offered a console that small. I have a '69 catalog that lists an 18" (I think) console. Go fig.

Wow, the Japanese sold tube TVs in the US? I know I've heard of a few tiny Panasonic instant on ones, but never a large console, though I seem to recall an ACIENT Panasonic console a friend's grandfather had. Was like a 21" though color, though. But it looked acient, even in the 80's. *shrug*

My parents first color tv was a Sharp I fixed up for them. It was a 19" table model from about 1970 or 71. Remote and all tube. All metal and buiIt like a tank. It had a UHF tuner like a car Radio dial. Really high quality.

There were a number of smallish consoles/consolettes from Japan in the late 60s or so, if you dig through some old Sams files you'll come across them. Usually they are kinda weird looking. I recall coming across a small MGA (Mitsubishi) console once; I had a couple hybrid chassis JVC color sets. Tube tv's seem ancient today & it does seem a little strange to see tube sets from the big Japanese makers.

Even more strange in this age of 32" & 36" direct view, & "the sky's the limit" projection sets that 19" was considered large...-Sandy G.

It could be a production run that was meant for their domestic market as well as export. Japan uses NTSC, and the only differences are the carriers on their TV channels (use a different tuner) and their powerline is a bit lower (100V) than ours (use a different power transformer, or one with taps at 100V and 120V).

Also the labels on the user controls would be different, but that's no big deal.
