This is one of my neighborhood finds (in downers grove) back in april. Its been sitting around waiting for repair. Finally decided to get this thing going. Took the back off for the first time to see what was in there. I had sylvania sets before, but most were solid state with few tubes. This one, however has many more tubes (chroma and delfection circuits) Rest of the circuits are transistorized. Its a D902 chassis, dating it to 68.
Right off the bat, the CRT was toast HK short on R and G guns hardly any emission on B. Rejuventator/restorer wouldnt bring it back. No big deal, Ive got 2 spare 25XP22 crts. Changed that, and got a picture. Had to change all the 6GH8's in the chorma to get the color to come back, the 6GY6 x and z demods were shot too. Vertical was short, figured a cap was no good, turns out the vertical output was weak (seldomly does a new vertical output tube fix a vertical problem!)
UHF tuner didnt do a thing, took that apart cleaned the wiper contacts of the dry grease so the rotor would make contact to the case. That helped but was out of alignment. Aligned the oscillator tuning plates on the tuner and got the UHF channels to come back like they should.
Not a bad set, its in great shape and has a good picture. Seems to have been in a clean enviroment, no rust or other cosmetic problems other than the tube diagam looks like it got wet and one time.

Pretty decent picture. Sylvania sets never had a razor sharp picture like RCA.

I remember finding one of these at the city-wide junk collection back in 92 or so in Mantua, Ohio, was all there except the CRT had been smashed and the horiz out tube was missing. Had no spare crt's at that time so I had to strip it for parts (still have the chassis and some parts). It's nice to see one working.

When I was having some cabinets re-done, I spotted a Sylvania like that in the warehouse area of the shop. I asked the salesman if I could have the set, since it looked as though it was sitting there unused since before Doug was born ( ;) ) and was covered in two inches of sawdust.

Guy said "No, the owner doesn't give away ANYTHING." :worried: It'll end up in a dumpster no doubt.

I've had 3 Sylvanias cross my path. One was an early solid state console, pretty high-end, from the alley by a tv shop. Never worked & I was even dumber then than now so that was that. Second was a small console sorta like this one, maybe a year older. Rough cabinet but great color. When the vertical went out I thought it meant the picture tube was shot (told you I was dumb) and junked it. Third one was a little newer than this, a tired old dog with bad green cataracts & hv problems. That was just a few years ago, but before I discovered AK. Otherwise it would have been saved.
