Hello everyone!

I've recently acquired a Zenith console TV that I'm planning to restore. I believe that I've found the correct schematics on SAMS, but I wanted to double check with someone more knowledgeable than me prior to purchasing them as this is my first time working on a TV this old. (bonus points if anyone already has a pdf that they can share with me!)

The back of the television lists the model number as Z8563-09 as well as two chassis numbers, 14Z8C50 and 25ZT120 for the TV and radio respectively, I believe. This is all packaged together in a "Zenith Service Saver Chassis".

If it helps, here's a pic of the sticker which gave me this info (https://imgur.com/a/izg3QaW).

I believe this should be the correct schematic for the television section (https://www.samswebsite.com/en/photofact/details/index/id/29332) whereas this might be the schematic for the radio (https://www.samswebsite.com/en/photofact/details/index/id/14779). I have to do more research on the record player prior to working on that section.

Can anyone verify this for me before I purchase these? Also before anyone suggests it, no, my library does not give me access to these manuals for free unfortuantely.

Any additional information about this television would also be greatly appreciated, especially if anyone can date it. My current guess is that it's from the mid-to-late 60s or early 70s.

Thanks in advance!

Its a "Z" model so its 1969. Would have been released fall of 1968.
Combos sit around a while so sometimes they are sold months later.

I strongly suggest you look for original paper copies, MUCH better than
the PDF from Sams & a LOT cheaper !
I probably have both & will check tomorrow, then get back to you.

Thanks for the info! I appreciate it. I'll try looking some more on my own for a physical copy, but let me know if you find anything yourself. No rush though. Thanks!

Upon doing further research, I've found that the television is covered in service manual CM-114S (part no. 923-530) while the radio is covered in HF 17 (part no. 923-521). I've found both on eBay, so I'm gonna snag them while I can. I'll have to scan them once they arrive and attach them to this thread for future reference.

Just in case anyone else finds this thread while Googling for their own schematic, here's a copy of Zenith service manual index that I used to find all of this info (https://archive.org/details/zenith-923-1069-service-manual-index-1948-thru-1982/). I would attach that here as well, but the file size is quite large. Hopefully this'll help someone else though.

Haven't had the time to look into the record player part of the console just yet, but I'll try to update the thread if and when I find service manuals for that as well.

Just keep in mind the TV manual is a supplement to CM 114 and may
be scattered between CM114 & CM114S. As long as you get the main
schematic you are good to go. If you are new to TV get the HV up first
with a raster as cheap & easy as possible. At that point you can evaluate the
set & be sure its worth spending money & time on.

Good luck & C U Later

I'll get CM-114 too, just to be safe. At the very least, I can scan it and upload it somewhere, even if I don't end up using it. Thanks again for all your help! I'm almost certain that this project won't go off without at least a few hiccups, so I'll definitely be sticking around haha. Take care!

Not sure if there's a better place to ask this, so I'm tacking this onto here.

I'm trying to figure out what parts I need for the radio section of my console and I ran into a bizarre issue. If anyone else out there has a similar unit, I'd love to hear from you.

To make a long story short, there's an electrolytic capacitor listed on my radio's schematic/part list that just is not there on my radio. I'll attach a picture of the schematic here (https://i.imgur.com/gc0SrI3.jpeg). C33 is the problem child. There should be a 5 uF 12V capacitor connecting pin 4 of the 3rd AM IF transformer (T7) to pin 6 through a 15 K resistor and a diode.

I'm 99.9% certain that I'm looking at the right part of the board and schematic. However, It's just not there. I'll try attaching a couple pics to show what I'm looking at. It's almost impossible to get a good photo of this spot right here, so I'll add some text to help everyone see. Pic 1 (https://i.imgur.com/d7OAc1W.jpeg). Pic 2 (https://i.imgur.com/Qfjboic.jpeg).

The original owner was apparently still using this set as recently as 2018, so presumably this all works. That being said, I believe this is mostly original.

Prior to purchasing this set, I only ever powered the radio up to static. I think it's got a few non-electrolytic capacitors that need replacing before I can really feel comfortable powering it on again and testing it further. If the radio works fine without it though, I'm willing to just let sleeping dogs lie. I suppose something like this isn't impossible. Just couldn't believe my luck haha.

Gonna tack one more question here too while I'm at it: "100 + 100 uF" capacitors -- are those in series or parallel?

The parts list calls it "2 x 100 uF", the part itself reads "100 + 100 uF", and the schematic kinda makes it appear to be in parallel. In theory though, replacing it with a 200 uF capacitor should work fine regardless of the configuration (200 uF required if in parallel, 50 uF if in series, I believe). Just curious more than anything.

Thanks in advance!

First see if you can find the make, model, & chassis numbers. Probably a production change.
Caps add up to 2mfd if in //. Modern eq is 220mfd. They also be part of a 2 section can.

Thanks for this. After looking into it further, I'm leaning towards production change. (Perhaps that's what the -09 part of the model number signifies?)

Also, I've done more research into these split electrolytic capacitors, and I think I was making things too complicated. I should be able to replace it with two separate 100 uF capacitors, right? That's essentially what one of these things are after all--two capacitors with a tied ground.
