View Full Version : 1986 RCA Console TV Model G25343WK
Console User 12-20-2020, 06:40 PM I recently purchased this TV. It came from a 90 Year Old Couple who just upgraded to a Flat Screen TV. The TV comes on real good and clear and no colors are funky when it first powers on. The issue I am having with the TV is that Dark Images like Black or Bright Color like white have a Blue Shadow or Blue Outline on them. It's not too noticeable when setting far from TV. However, if you get up real close to the TV you can see alot of blue highlighting on the edges of objects such as blue coloring on a person's hair or blue coloring on a white jersey of a football player. Also, I have noticed, I seem to have a solid blue vertical line on both sides of the screen that is visible when TV is blank from switching to screen shot to screen shot. There is no red or green color bleed. In a Black and White Screen Shot there is quite a bit of blue color visible in the picture. I have tried adjusting the Color, Picture and Bright Level and none of those adjustments seem to help. Can someone tell me if this is a sign of the picture tube getting weak or another issue that needs an adjustment. Thanks. 1996 NOT 1986...

old_tv_nut 12-20-2020, 08:01 PM Could be a sign of picture tube getting weak, but a setup adjustment of G2 voltages might fix it. If you turn down the contrast, the blue smear should shrink and disappear at low enough setting. This is a sign that the set up either is wrong or is compensating for a weak blue gun. Usually, you would expect the red gun to be the weakest as it is normally driven the hardest.

old_tv_nut 12-20-2020, 08:30 PM I assume this chassis has separate red, green and blue video output transistors driving the cathodes. Then, that kind of smear indicates the video output transistor for the blue cathode is saturated (drawing max current and producing minimum voltage). A possible fix is to adjust the G2 voltage (making the picture darker) and then turn up the brightness (making the video output transistor collector voltages higher and avoiding saturation).
[Hope I didn't get that backwards - having the service info / setup procedure would help.]
old_tv_nut 12-20-2020, 08:36 PM Oops - I think I did get that backwards. You want the cathode voltages to go higher, which would darken the picture, so you brighten it with the G2 setting.

(Remember when parents told their children not to sit too close to a color TV due to the X-ray scare of the 1960s-'70s?) If the distortion is not noticeable at normal viewing distance, why bother with it at all? I sit 10 feet away from my 32" flat screen and see the picture just fine. I do not notice any difference between standard definition and high definition pictures anyway, except the picture is much sharper than it was at the old 4:3 aspect ratio. As long as I can see a clear picture on my TV at ten feet (I can), it is plenty good enough for me.

Did you know that 10 feet is known in the industry as the "Lechner distance?"
It is the most common viewing distance of TV in the American home, as determined by research done by Bernie Lechner of Sarnoff Labs.
Anyway, I think that wide blue smear shown in Console User's photos would be visible at ten feet. It is not only wide, but like all such smears is at maximum brightness.
Console User 12-20-2020, 09:04 PM Well, I turned down the G2 as you stated first a little and made it darker. Then brightened the picture up with the Bright Setting until I had a nice picture. It seems to me it pretty much did away with the Blue Smearing. Yes, the Smear was noticeable from a distance away from the TV just not up close. However, not always visible from a distance.

Try it with contrast set to maximum to see if you were able to go far enough. If the tube is going bad, you may not be able to get enough adjustment for both a good picture and no smearing at max contrast, but you should try it.
Console User 12-21-2020, 06:39 PM I worked with my TV a little more today. I turned Color, Bright, Tint, and Sharpness all to the halfway point on the Adjustments. I left Picture at about 3/4 the way. I also adjusted the focus a little to take out some of the smearing in the picture. I also adjusted the G2 to where I just have a slight background visible on the blank screen. It seems to be not too bad on blue coloring smear from this distance now. I think I may have noticed another issue with the set today. When I first power on the TV and pull up my guide on my Dish Receiver the yellow box on channel numbers is partially discolored for a few minutes on the far left hand side. If you cancel out of the guide and go back to it later then the issue of discoloring disappears. Also, I am thinking that after first turned on the picture may be doing a slight flash on the screen.
Console User 12-22-2020, 07:45 PM What would cause the TV to show what should be yellow on the screen look half lime green half yellow when TV is first turned on? Also, what would cause a noticeable flash of brighter picture momentarily after turned on and then after this the yellow is shown in it's normal tone of color? It does this color switch on the left hand side of TV only I believe.
jbattles 12-23-2020, 07:29 AM hey you have a gassy CRT, its worn out, but if it can produce a decent picture. run the hell out of it until its dead. look for another RCA and grab the tube.
Console User 12-24-2020, 04:09 PM Would it do any good to turn up the G2? I backed down on Picture, & sharpness & then adjusted focus. I turned up bright to make picture not so dark since I lowered picture..It seems better now..
jbattles 12-25-2020, 01:04 PM hey i suggest of doing a setup and if it makes a nice picture that you could live with just do it and keep an eye out for a good tube, but if i remember right there's a service menu you pull up and you can set your r g b bias controls and drives to get a good bright grayscale picture. i always liked a brighter picture with the contrast turn to just about middle. try that first.
Console User 12-25-2020, 09:35 PM I went in and turned down my Picture to about Midway Point. I then bumped up the bright to just a little past the half way point. I had turned up G2 Previously so since I bumped up the brightness I gradually backed down on the G2 Setting. It doesn't seem to show much blooming of the blue set this way. I had to turn up the Sharpness some too. The picture is a little dark, but not bad for the way I had to adjust settings to keep the blue smearing down to minimum or not at all. I'm not sure how you get into the Service Menu on these 1996 Sets either? I thought someone said one time you hold down on the menu button or have to enter a code? Thanks for your advice.
JohnCT 12-26-2020, 06:40 AM What I used to do on those RCAs was turn down the contrast preset pot on the main board because customers would often push the picture reset button in the menu. It's a trimmer with (IIRC) and orange plastic cap. A small screwdriver or hexaligner will work. You can also use your fingers. Towards the middle/left of the main board.
The picture tube is a bit weak and default contrast can cause a bit of halo smear on one or more colors, yet still be strong enough to provide an accurate and clean picture when the contrast is set to a more usable level.

Console User 12-26-2020, 12:37 PM Thank You for your information. I'll look into that. I should have grabbed my phone and took a picture this morning when I turned the TV on. It really went wacko for awhile. I had a picture that was totally messed up like it was rolling, etc. I switched the TV over to the RCA AV Inputs and it was fine on that source. It was in the coax cable hookup in the back of the TV. I wiggled the cable and that input source was okay too. It had even lost it's color on the Coax Input versus a nice colored picture at the same time when I switched over to the RCA Input.

Console User 12-26-2020, 12:57 PM I would probably think it hasn't been worked on by the previous owners. Their Grandson talked like nothing had been done to it. That wouldn't cause any of the blooming/smearing issue would it in the blue color? I minimized that by turning down my picture and upping the Bright to compensate for the dim picture. I turned up the sharpness also.
Console User 12-26-2020, 06:26 PM I hooked my TV Video Source up with the S Video and the RCA Cable Red & White for the Audio. I seem to have a pretty good clear, & not too dark of a picture running it this way. The Blue blooming/smearing doesn't seem to be noticeable from a reasonable viewing distance. I switch my Input over to Antenna/Cable Coax Cable and the picture isn't nearly as nice and vibrant as through the S Video. I turned down the Picture a little from the way the TV was Preset to help my issue of the blue blooming. I think I can live with the picture that I am getting now.

Not on the 140 (or 168/169), which this should be for 1986 model year. The early '90s CTC 17X/18X/195/197 series had the tuner on board setup, and as you said, the tuner grounds (and heatsink grounds) would cause performance issues and eeprom corruption.

BTW what is the chassis ## ? And hows about a few nudies of the chassis.
Lastly abt 2 months ago there was another RCA about the same vintage with the same looking problem. At first glance it looked like a weak jug or messy 200V. But it just didnt fit the bill. He was going to change the jungle
but got intimidate by the SMD's

Console User 12-27-2020, 02:10 PM Does anyone know how to enter into the Service Menu for the 1996 RCA Model G25343WK? I would like to be able to get to the Bias and Drive Adjustments for the Red, Blue, & Green. I would like to be able to turn down the Blue a little and then tweak the others to see, if that helps with the Blue Blooming. The Blue Blooming is really noticeable around lettering, around the shoulder and collar areas of images that are in black. If you try to turn up the picture really high the blue just smears out. Issue with black lettering on certain white backgrounds. The Blue is the only color blooming out.
Console User 12-27-2020, 07:17 PM I have still been tweaking TV Adjustments. I turn down the Picture Level to try to keep the blue smearing to the least visible level as possible but still have a picture that looks appealing enough to still watch. I've noticed that even if I turn the Picture Level way down close to dim I can still see the blue smearing near the TV. Does that indicate if I turn the Picture Level way down and the Blue is still Blooming on the Picture that it is a weak picture tube or does this signal there is another issue in TV Set other than a faulty picture tube? I've had other RCA Sets before that if I experienced Color Bleed in one of the colors I could turn down the Picture Level and it would usually take care of the issue. However, in this particular set this doesn't seem to help me much at all.

I didn’t get picture of TV Flashing & Fluttering when turned on in morning when a Set is Cold. I turn it off & wait a few minutes then comes on & works fine. I presume that may be an issue in tuner soldering since it doesn’t do that on S Video?
jbattles 12-28-2020, 11:38 AM well the tuner issues is popping off station, TV turn off and back on just strange things. when RCA built the sets they used solder that was not the best quality and poorly soldered the grounds in the tuner. the solder will break apart and cause the voltage to go crazy and the microcomputer to change data in the e prom where the data is stored and the e prom would go bad.
from what i can tell it needs a setup, but 99% of the adjustments are the serve menu, but i suggest turn the picture control or contrast control down until it stops smearing or use s-video. let it play and see what happens.
i looked the model no up and the chassis no is ctc177, maybe zeno or john can chime in.
Console User 12-28-2020, 03:09 PM I was able to get into the Service Menu to where you can adjust your bias and Drive settings. I turned the Blue down on both of them. Also, made slight adjustments to the green. I do not seem to have the Blue bleeding out. I still do have a slight outline of some objects in blue if looking real close to set. However, when setting in my easy chair the picture to me looks better. This was done with the Picture Level turned down and the brightness increased. I guess, I talked to a Local TV Repairman and he told me not to run the set too much until I get the connections at my tuner fixed. He said it may make the e prom go out totally.

Dont touch tuner settings BUT do record them just in case.
Console User 12-28-2020, 03:33 PM Yep. I recorded all the numbers in the Bias and Drive Settings before changing them. I didn't go to the Tuner Settings. I just went to the Number V76. Here is the numbers what it was set at, followed by what I have them at now.
BIAS: Red-56; Green-46; Blue-45 Now set at In Order as listed before 56;40;35
Drive: Red-49; Green-39; Blue-36 Now set at In Order as listed before 49;35;28
To me the picture looks better. It even looks clearer and sharper. I do not seem to have the Blue Flaring . I do still have a little noticeable Blue Outline etching but not really noticeable anymore from a reasonable viewing distance. Just when up close to set when making adjustments.

jbattles 12-28-2020, 04:19 PM The set is 25 years old and i believe the tuner has been done. When new they went a couple of years before they grounds had to be redone. make sure your color is off and you have a good grayscale when setting drives and bias and enjoy it. The blue out line is convergence and it was never perfect. Those were one of my favorite sets. in Atlanta they were everywhere. those sets and the zenith system 3 sets has a place in my heart.

OK, big difference. The advice Jbattles gave you then is correct on the 1996 years regarding the tuner grounds and eeprom corruption if allowed to go uncorrected. Also, the two solder tabs on the horiz output and LV regulator IC heatsinks must also be soldered or the eeprom will corrupt.

He's right. Also, there are two heatsinks with solder ground tabs: the horiz output and LV regulator IC heatsinks. Cracks on the solder will corrupt those faster than even the tuner grounds will.
I still have a couple of dozen of those stupid eeproms if something goes wrong. Most were the same except for features. I used to stock most of the higher featured ones to cover all the models.

Console User 12-28-2020, 06:14 PM I think, my Parents 1991 Zenith Console Set had a somewhat similar issue with the tuner ground. I can remember how it worked and worked with no known issues. Then one day in about 2011 or so we turned it on and we had a picture then in a few minutes when to snow. I fiddled around with the tuner on the main board and could get a picture if I propped up the tuner with a pencil or something. I can remember it was all going good until I was going to take it to a TV Shop. Then I somehow messed with it and hit something and the set went totally dead. We ended up having a replacement main board put in it. It ran for several more years after that. This set will only go to snow or start rolling, etc. usually after it's been on a few minutes the first thing in the morning. Then it seems to not act up the other times during the day when it's turned back on. I can't get it in the Shop until next week. I was hoping to get by with it until then?

The TV seems to work okay and not turn to snow or a blank screen if I use the RCA hookup on the back of TV versus the Coaxial Hookup. If this is the case will it be okay to use the TV this way until I get it into the shop or will it still be at risk of having the set go totally out before connections etc. are repaired?

Hmm.. not 100% sure about the tuner connections, but I am positive the two heatsink tabs will corrupt the eeprom regardless of what input it's on.
I remember the first time we saw one of these in warranty shortly after they were in production- it came in with no sound. Back then, we didn't have the tricks we used later to recover the eeprom but just replaced the chip. It came back a week later with no sound. I changed the eeprom again and while it was running, I tapped the chassis board with the back end of a 1/4" driver like I did for years. The picture blinked and came back, but sound went out. Eeprom corrupted again. I called RCA tech support and they told me about resoldering the two heatsink tabs. This was before the tuners started acted up. Later on they issued a "goldenrod" bulletin on that.

EDIT: it's time consuming, but as long as the TV is running, I'd go in the service menu and write down every value, particularly the tuner parameters if you ever plan to use the tuner again. There were places selling "pre-programmed" eeproms but there is no such thing. On an analogue TV, every one is unique and quite different. If your eeprom goes bad, you can certainly readjust the grey scale, horiz osc, vert, etc., but the tuner will need to be aligned with a generator. RCA equipped the ASCs with a very clever device (frequency agile generator) that would output any channel on VHF Lo, Hi, UHF, and all cable bands. It had three attenuator switches and all you needed was a voltmeter to do a perfect tuner alignment. Using the attenuators, you could actually do it by eye. I still have the tuner aligner, one of the few things I didn't toss when we switched from CRTs to flats virtually overnight.

Would the issue with the tuner have anything to do with me getting a Blue Outline around dark hairline, dark clothing, etc. on the edges? It's like if you were to take a blue marker and trace around an object that is dark with a blue marker. Also, noticeable on black stenciled letters on a certain background. I believe, someone thought this may be a convergence issue and that they were always this way. I have had several RCA Sets but never dealt with this issue in the past.

If you can take a real good picture of what you're talking about, I can get a better idea.
Those RCAs were built for cost, but I have to tell you, design wise they were very well sorted. There were no "that's just the way they are" performance issues. Even when put behind a 35" tube, they produced a very nice artifact free picture.
As far as convergence, all RCAs of that era used a pre-yammed yoke and a flexible magnetic convergence/purity band in place of the mechanical beam bender that everyone else used, and I can state categorically that in the thousands of those I had repaired over the years, I never had a convergence issue on any of them.
Generally, a blue outline is a weak CRT, but the halo would not be static: it would change and flare outward with contrast and brightness level. If you see the halo at very low brightness levels, I would say it's not a weak tube.
If the tube is strong, I'd lean towards a bad jungle IC causing that. Uncommon but I've seen them. I can't think of anything in the eeprom that would cause that.

I took a picture of my issue. It's in my Album under my User Name. It shows a lot of blue everywhere. I have found, that no matter how much I turn down the Picture and or Brightness it never really goes away. It just maybe helps to make it not so noticeable in the screen shots.
JohnCT 12-31-2020, 07:19 AM OK, I see the pic. If you put an image on and freeze frame it (like a DVD), and the blue flaring does not change with brightness/contrast or G2 changes, then it's not the tube (huzzah).
Just to be sure it's not convergence, can you take a pic of the problem showing graphics? With regard to convergence, make sure the picture tube wasn't changed. We were supposed to install a mechanical beam bender when the tube was changed, but lots of us just reused the flexible magnetic tape. You would be surprised how easily the convergence and purity fell into place by rotating and then taping the magnetic strip back down..
I have those schematics at work, when I get there I'll check to see what's involved in the RGB system. IIRC, there are three transistors (r,g,b) off the jungle which drive the three TO-220 transistors on the CRT socket board.
I also may have seen this before and logged it.
It looks like the blue has very low bandwidth and is causing the blue flare.
A trick to split the problem between the main chassis and the CRT socket board or CRT itself is to swap the blue and (say) red wire inputs to the CRT board and see if the flare swaps to red (turn the chroma down). If it stays on the blue, the main board is OK and the problem is at the socket board or tube itself. If the flaring changes to red, we have to work backward to the main board.

There is no evidence of blue flaring when put on a blank screen say in Video Source and pull up the menu items.

I do not seem to have as much blue flare in the picture. It doesn't even seem visible from a distance now. It may have dimmed my picture some and the white isn't as pure by increasing the green and lessening the blue. However, I feel it's better than the blue flare. I will post a picture in my Album of a screen shot now.

One odd artifact of eeprom corruption in this chassis series is that sometimes the parameters get pushed way beyond their programmed range.
That seems to not make sense but go back into the service menu and lower the blue bias to it's lowest point. Ordinarily, it will go to value zero and stop. If it does, it's acting normally.
Under certain conditions, you may find it runs past zero and starts again from the top and runs back down. If this happens, keep pushing the down button until it reaches zero and stops - it may take two or more times. Do the same for the other colors and other features like contrast preset etc. Once each parameter reaches zero and stays there, it will be fine - it can no longer run past 255 or whatever the top number is. Don't touch the horiz osc adjustment because if that goes back to the top value, the HV shutdown will activate (there's a way to recover that, but it's a pain in the butt).

Blue really flames outward around lettering etc. when TV is set back to original setting of the blue drive & leaving picture level at factory setting. No luck of eliminating excess blue color in some pictures even with picture, bright, & color tweaked way down. The only way to get it as good as I can is leave blue drive & bias down which in turn gives a somewhat greenish cast to white.

The best way to be sure is put on a nice bright picture source and put it in freeze frame. Then mark or otherwise note the blue flare. With a still picture, nothing should move. If the flaring tracks with the contrast setting, the tube is the culprit. If the flaring is static while the contrast is moved, something else is going on.

Console User 01-03-2021, 04:19 PM The blue flares some if you freeze the picture. It helps picture quality & look some if I move tint more towards a Green. The way it’s currently set at Red looks a little more like magenta. The greener tint takes away some of the blue shadowing.
Console User 01-03-2021, 07:05 PM Posted two new pictures to my album. I have found, if I turn down picture & turn up bright the blue flaring isn’t noticeable from viewing distance. If you look at picture up close, it doesn’t seem to be as dominant as if TV is ran at Picture Reset.

Console User 01-17-2021, 06:44 PM Just another few comments on my issue. TV still shows like a blue shadow or blue outline around certain images especially like for example a black suit coat next to a white shirt etc. I tried turning down the Bias and Drive of the colors and especially blue. The blue shadow issue doesn't improve. I have tried turning down picture and adjusting Bright. The Blue is still an issue. I have never had such an issue. I have had where a red or blue color can bloom out and making adjustments has always helped in those times. I can when looking up close have a little blue flare smearing out. This blue shadowing outline issue doesn't smear out like when you have a weak picture tube. The colors otherwise look very good. The TV is not blurry and no dark areas on the screen anywhere. When you have a black and white show on the blue doesn't bloom out but you get a lot of blue shadowing in the black and white picture.
Console User 01-24-2021, 01:04 PM Took my TV to the TV Repairman this past Monday. He soldered I believe about all the connections in the Tuner Board since it was giving me issues. He soldered some wire on some of the connections that he knew were known to give problems. As for the blue issue on my TV Screen shots. This TV has no adjustable bands on the back of the CRT neck for Convergence adjustments. We grey scaled and made adjustments to the Red, Green, and Blue Drives. It looks pretty good know. The color of some of blue shots looks a little different from the other TV Set in the home. He almost thinks the issue with the blue affect on edge of images may very well been that way when it left the factory the way they had it set. What is anyone else's thought on this?
