Was such a critter ever made, and if so, any idea what year(s)?

O Yeah. Magnavox did a 27" BW around 1959-60 or so.It was a wide deflection (110 degree?), small neck. My brother had one in a big honkin' combo. The 27 inchers tended to lose emission and go flat very quickly.

My dad had a Hallicrafters 27" and he changed the tube twice in 4 years.

In 1959 my dad bought an RCA built Admiral color TV CTC11 that year, so I would guess the Hallicrafters was 54-55 somewhere.

EDIT: my older brother just told me he thinks the Hallicrafters was indeed somewhere between 53 and 55 by his recollection. He confirmed the tubes were good for maybe 2 years.

There was an even bigger screen available for a few years: the Dumont Royal Soverign (and a couple of off brand sets that used it's CRT)...

I think the 27" sets lingered into the mid-late 60s and occupied that 1 step below a decent color console to the "I want to spend color set money, but I think color sets require too much maintenance so give me the best monochrome set you got bub" market.

Anybody have info on the 27 inch tube (ad flyers, tube number, SAMS of a set, etc.)?

I have seen pictures/ads of 24 inch monochrome sets from the 50s, but don't recall 27s.
(Excluding the Dumont roundies)

27” tubes:
27ap4 (metal), 27ep4, gp4, lp4, mp4, np4, rp4, sp4, up4, vp4 (glass)
all were 90 degree rectangular.
