I found what is basically an RCA Colortrak TV, only it has a GE badge on it. It was made in February 1992, and is a CTC 166 CS chassis. So basically an early Thomson built rebadged RCA set.

I am pretty sure this set is a low hour set. I do not have a CRT tester, but the CRT produces a good picture even with the drive and bias controls set to absolute minimum. The inside of the set was relatively clean, not very much dust on the HV anode lead, and with the brightness and contrast set at their midpoints I have a nice bright image with the bias controls turned all the way down, and the drive controls turned up maybe 1/8th of a turn if that. Other than that I have just made slight adjustments to the G2 and focus controls.


So here is the problem: Red or red/orange colors are a little bit smeared. It's not much smearing, but it is noticeable. Color level makes it worse and I know its not my video source because if I turn up the CRT drive controls, the onscreen menus start to smear.

I have seen this before on CTC 158 chassis sets (RCA Colortrak 2000) and I don't think the issue is CRT related. I'm wondering if something on the chassis has gone out of spec.

Hard to tell from that picture - does it look ragged and changing like a torn fabric and comes or goes abruptly as the color is turned up, or stationary, intensity varies smoothly with color control and gradually fades out to the right?

If ragged, it's a bias/G2 problem, possibly fix by going through proper G2 and bias set-up procedure. I suspect this isn't it, because the white rectangle isn't showing it. Edit: try turning brightness and contrast to max to see if it appears on the white rectangle.

If stationary and gradually fades, it's a chroma smear. Maybe can be improved a bit by fine tuning.

It looks to me like the blue part is smeared too, which would also say a chroma smear.

I'm leaning towards Chroma smear. It's not ragged at all. No, the smearing is smooth, changes with color level.

Brightness and contrast at max do not affect the white rectangle.

I should also note that I am running an S-Video signal, so the tuner is not involved at all.

Look at 0:32.

The orange bar is dark on the left edge and smears to the right on the right edge.

I'd say this is a combination of the normal low bandwidth of chroma plus a mismatch of chroma and luma delay. The delay mismatch probably arises in the cable box (or whatever your source is), which doesn't have a luma delay to match the chroma bandwidth, and not in the TV.

At 0:40, it's also obvious in the logo in the video just above the menu.

There is another thing that is not a problem right now, but could be a problem in the future. I need to add some context here.

I am more familiar with the CTC 158 chassis. You unplug one of those, plug it back in and turn it on, and it starts autoprogramming because it lost the channel information. This CTC 166 remembers its channel info. Great!

It also has an on screen clock that displays accurate time. Great!

Uh, wait... that means this TV has a real time clock, which as far as I know should be powered by a battery...

...A 28 year old battery...

Now I have looked at the chassis. I have not had it out of the set, but I have looked at it and seen nothing like a battery. If there is one in this set, maybe I should know about it before it decides to leak and destroy traces on the circuit board.

The smear looks like it may be normal or just a little off. That means
it will be tough to find. If you take a pix of the chassis something
may come to mind.
The clock probably uses a big cap to hold time. Batteries can surprise
you. I had an old Zenith R472 series clock radio sitting for years. My
sis needed one so I cleaned it up & test ran it a few days. It sat a day or two
unplugged & when it came up the clock was right ! Not bad for a
40 yr old battery:banana:

Some batteries look sort of like capacitor or were primative super capacitors. Oftentimes they will have unusually high capacitance like 100000uF or xF listed... having a schematic or service manual makes IDing parts like that less of a guessing game.

This thread remained me that I have an RCA console tv from 1989 that needs to be fixed. The tv no longer powers up. I have not done any work on it yet. The crt in mine is little weak but still makes a very good picture when it was working

I don't see it in the COLOR and BRIGHTNESS menus you popped up in the video. The set's on-screen menus(not those from your cable box) are generated by RGB signals, I believe, and can only have small color fringing due to misconvergence, nothing due to chroma smear/delay.

Well let me answer that question with a question: Is this chroma smearing a legitimate issue or is it just a limitation of the chassis design?

My gut tells me that since the TV's own menu is affected, it's probably aging capacitors. I'm thinking of that 33uf by the flyback, but do I want to pull the chassis and start shotgunning capacitors? Or do I want to get the service info and attempt to actually diagnose the set?

I do believe that the CRT is pretty strong. I turned the G2 control to its minimum and could still see a decent picture, yet the chroma smear was still present.

You need to find someone familiar with the Thomson chassis to tell you if they were normally like this.

To help answer if this was expected, it might help to know where it was built and by whom. What does the label say about country of manufacture?

No, the 166 was a fine performer with no known vices. Also, incredibly reliable.

I remember having a problem like that with the jungle chip in several brands (I think Toshiba and Sanyo made most of the jungle ICs for the industry). If it uses the same one as the 169, I might have one. I scrapped out most of my analog chassis some years ago, but I have friends who might have an original jungle if you post the number.

As far as the cap off the flyback, if that was giving you problems, you'd see a brightness shift from one side of the screen towards the other. Put the picture to zero and lower the brightness in a dark room. If the picture is evenly lit, the cap for the kine source is prob good. The easiest and best way is to scope the 200V right at the CRT socket.

If the smear is on just one color, it could even be a problem at the CRT socket board. A cranky kine drive transistor could do this or a shorted inductor on that one color. The inductor will read fine resistance-wise but a shorted turn will cause a smear.

EDIT: if it affects one color, you can swap the red/gree/blue signal input leads to the CRT socket and see what happens. The color will be all wrong but we're interested in the smear. If the color smear doesn't change, the problem is on the CRT socket board or CRT. If the smear shifts color, it's on the main chassis - perhaps the jungle IC or one of the buffer transistors between the jungle and CRT socket board.

Looking at things in the chroma shows no adjustments and just a few
'lytics. I dont think its normal. Its bad enough that I would have seen in
the day but probably not the customer. Had this come in FOR that
problem we probably would call RCA TA first and if no answer give it
back & tell them to take it to RCA service. Let them loose there shirt on it !
But who knows ? You might take some voltages & find something off and obvious:D

That's what I figured. I know the quality took a nosedive after Thomson acquired RCA and GE, but the 1991-1992 sets were still well made. That's why I saved this set.

The smearing is rather slight. I would think if the IC failed it would be a hard fail with significant changes to the picture.

It affects all 3 colors. I thought it was just red at first but its all 3 colors.

Since I had some time today, I decided to pull the chassis out of the set. The idea was to use my LCR component tester to test some capacitors, if anything just for my own curiosity, see how well the caps in the high voltage areas have held up.

That cap is a 4.7 uf @ 50 volt, and it's right by the Horizontal Output Transistor.

No... Did I really get this lucky? Is it that simple? Well lets pull it out and test it...

Annnd yyyyeeeaaaahhhh it's reading 39 pf on my tester. I'm gonna say that cap is bad.

Now this is interesting. I happen to have that exact same cap, and I mean the exact same:

I pulled the cap on the left out of a CTC 158 chassis, and it tests good. So lets pop it in and see what we get?


No change. Picture looks the same. Eh I didn't think it would be that easy anyway. However it would be nice to know what that capacitor does, because that was definitely a problem, if not the problem I'm chasing.

The cap probably C4306. It filters the primary of the hoz drive transformer.
Find C4701 680mfd probably near the HV transformer. If it opens
it will cook C4306.

And welp I have another problem now, one of my own making. I don't think I had the CRT anode lead reconnected properly. Turned TV on, heard a small pop. The TV now turns on and off. Disconnected and reconnected the anode cap and made sure it is seated properly. The TV still turns on and off by itself.

Welp no one to blame there but myself. What did I screw up?

Edit: Scratch all that. I forgot to solder one leg on a capacitor.

Do you mean that when you apply AC, it power cycles until unplugged?

I hope you didn't smote the micro. IIRC, that micro has the software inside, and it came with instructions for configuring it to the exact chassis version (used in several). You get one shot to configure it correctly using a series of key strokes.

Unfortunately, I dumped all my analogue specific stuff years ago, although recently I stumbled across a ton of original Philips ICs from the 80s and 90s if anyone is crazy enough to have one of those!

If you don't have a schematic, I probably still do and if I can't, one of my buddies was a sams subscriber and he has pretty much everything.

Fixed it.

I had forgotten to solder one leg on a capacitor. So, just simple dumb oversight on my part. TV's working again.

Also have a SAMS coming my way so that's taken care of.

Smearing shows up regardless of Brightness and Contrast settings. Only the Color setting affects it.

I don't have a CRT tester, however the CRT still produces a watchable image even with the G2, kine bias, and drive controls set to their minimum. I very highly doubt a weak CRT would be that bright.

Unless I have an epiphany I'm just going to wait for the SAMS to show up in the mail, then start looking at voltages.

TA8680. They were VERY high failure mostly for bad audio & AFT
problems. They were used in tons of brands & kept steaks on the
table for a few yrs. I did so many in Toshibas that I could do a complete
repair in abt 10 mn. The paperwork took longer !
Anyhows since I dont have the manual anymore cross the jungle IC to NTE
see if it comes out to NTE7010. If so its the same IC. The cross will
also pin out the IC so you can see what each pin is for.

BTW This IC shows some of the BS in parts prices. I could get them from
Toshiba for about $8. The same thing from Sharp parts was abt $25.

BTW #2 If you cut one open a jungle IC you will see its not an IC but a bunch of IC's in one pkg. Often each one has a separate VCC & GND.
Something to keep in mind.

Yep. Got another converter box, a DVD player, another DVD player with S-video, and so I can use this TV with a more modern source, I have an HDMI to S-video converter coming in the mail.

problems.

I doubt it's the jungle IC because the customer controls work, and the smearing is slight. Frankly if it's the jungle IC then I'll just leave it alone. I've changed one of those IC's before. It is not fun. It is tedious, and I have lifted up solder traces before.

Not exactly germane, but C4502 is a problem child as well. Might be well off replacing it. See the various symptom/cures in the PDF. The RCA listing for the CTC166 is 3 pages. Hope it helps.

So I received my HDMI to S-video converter, which is sweet because now I can hook this old TV to modern video sources, and I get to show off why I like these older Colortrak 2000 based sets:

The camera does not do it justice. Those are small fonts, readable on the TV screen, at 800x600 resolution. However you can see how smeared the icons are.

Now I did notice using a DVD player that it's not just chroma:

The smearing happens with pure luma. I can see it better than the camera can.


EDIT: I decided to snap pics of the screen at different color levels:

On the left, color level all the way down, and you can see just how freaking sharp the picture is. I mean for a standard def analog TV running over S-Video, that is freaking sharp!
In the middle: Color at midpoint: Still sharp but you can see how smeared the image has become.
On the right: Color at max level. The smearing is not any worse (at least it has not extended farther which definitely tells me it's not color bleed caused by a weak CRT) but the icons have lost their definition.

I think I need another way to go about this.

I have a copy of the SAMS now, and while it has given me information, it hasn't given me the info I need.


So lets try something else: What are all the things that could cause the colors to smear?

Bad CRT? I doubt it because it's plenty bright and there's a lot of headroom on the drive and bias controls.

Bad U1001 IC? I doubt that because otherwise the TV works fine. Tint works fine. Color level works fine. all menus work fine.

Bad capacitors? I have been spot checking them since I did find one that was bad. However that is the only one I have found. All the capacitors in the horizontal and vertical circuits check out. The caps around u1001 check out.

Bad component on the CRT neck board? I have seen color smearing caused by bad electrolytic capacitors on the CRT neck board before. I found one of the old CRT based iMac's that had that issue. However this RCA has no electrolytic capacitors on the CRT neck board. It does have carbon resistors, but the one I spot checked reads fine.


Don't have a CRT tester so can't test it to see if there's an issue with cutoff or maybe a short that's bleeding off the video information?

There's a thought! Yes it is almost like the color information is being bled off.

This is a video on a TV with a shorted CRT. shango066 rigged up a way to isolate the short so the TV would work, and you can see near the end of the video, when the CRT shorts it gets all smeared because the video information is bleeding off into the isolation transformer.


I don't think my CRT is shorted. If it was I doubt the TV would even turn on. However I do wonder if the reason the colors are smeared is because the color information is not fully getting through, or it's being bled off by a bad component?

You could have more than one thing going on, so let's try to clarify:

1) What is the source of the menus in post #14? Is it an internal menu from the TV, or from an external device? If internal, this may be a separate problem with the menu video injection (separate from the chroma delay you see on external sources).

2)The external sources you have shown so far all seem to have the chroma delayed compared to the luma. Maybe a luma delay line problem, but I would think if it was a bad delay line, the luma frequency response/transient response would be messed up.
Some external sources may not have the luma/chroma timing adjusted to NTSC broiadcast specs, so if the luma delay is a bit short on this model of TV, it will be made worse. [NOTE: NTSC broadcast transmitter specs include an envelope delay filter to delay the luma with respect to the chroma sidebands. This was specified to match the flat sharp cutoff IF amplifiers of the original receivers. Later, manufacturers found it better to use a "haystack" IF response, which did not match the transmitter filter. This was compensated by using a slightly longer luma delay line in the receiver. This chassis may simply use a slightly short luma delay line, the effect of which is made worse by the lack of a lack of envelope delay in common sources. Unfortunately, there is no analog station on the air that you could use to check.]

3) Have you tried to see if it changes significantly with fine tuning? [Thinking IF alignment or chroma alignment could be part of the issue.]

Post 14 is the TV's own menu.

This TV is from 1992. It has no fine tuning that I am aware of. Also I am running it off of S-Video which should not involve the tuner.

The luma delay line is worth exploring, but where would I find that? Luma and Chroma are controlled by a big IC.

This has an electronic tuner rather than mechanical, right? (So no fine tuning, just enter the channel number).

Can you check the schematic or post portions for the following:

IF: is it a surface wave filter (no or very few adjustable coils)?

Delay Line: should be a tubular coil a few inches long and a half inch or so in diameter, with the schematic symbol shown.

I've been following it best I can and have tried tweaking the 3 coils near the IC area, to no effect.

If you're going to start tweaking things without any service instructions of what they do, no one can help you.

It's impossible to tell what the functions of a lot of parts are that are connected to IC pins with no explanation of what's inside.

Also, this page seems to have a lot of connections to page 4 and some to page 3. I don't see the S-video input on this page, for example.

At this stage, it's still hard to say definitively if the smears are just poor design or actually something that could be fixed.

Also, it's very unlikely that any coil adjustments are causing those smears. This set uses a SAW (surface acoustic wave) IF, which cannot go out of alignment. If a smear actually is due to component failure, it's likely a capacitor(s).

On the subject of tweaking coils:

I try not to be stupid, and mark the original positions of any coils that I tweak, and typically I will tweak them maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn in either direction just to see if there is any effect. There was none and your explanation tells me why.

So more and more I am getting the impression that I may just have to live with it. It may just be the design, or a component that has aged that I either can't find or is not worth replacing.

Unless I think of something else what I very likely will do is just keep this set and wait until I find another set of this design (Colortrak 2000, RCA Dimensia, GE Somethingorother, maybe Proscan, and compare picture quality.

If I find one of a compatible design with a tired CRT I may have a good candidate to swap in as the whole chassis is rather easy to get out and no worries about setup because the yoke assembly is all bonded to the CRT.

I still think the jungle IC is the culprit. As far as the 166s go, I sold them brand new, and there was zero issues with performance on this or any Indiana built RCAs.

I have a notebook going back some 30 years, and I may have written in something about these. I'll check tomorrow at work.

First off he is using S-video so the chroma & video are separate already.
SO tuner, IF, video amps, comb filter, delay line are OUT of the pix.
IMHO the problem is a failure NOT inherent in the set. Its just too damn
obvious. This is a CTC166 not a cheap red China product. It was as good
as any at the time. Problems were few. I just remember some bad tuners,
bridge rects & the 9 V sense. The set uses a lot of SMD's for resistors &
transistors so that complicates things a bit. The order things get done
depending on the price of the IC is......
Change all chroma & VCC electrolytics.
Measure all IC voltages & scope all VCC's & GND's.
Pull IC & check all SMD's before replacing IC.
Replace IC
Call RCA TA ( they were very good ). If still no joy send to RCA service.

If you just decide to get an other RCA of this vintage add the CTC169 to your list. Its the top of line at the time & IMHO the best RCA ever built. I loved
working on them cause they always came out so good.

Here's a true (and truly boring) story:

Back in 1991, the 169 was first introduced as a high end chassis in the 31" and 35" table and console models. These chassis featured Invar mask CRTs, twin focus, digital pix in pix, and a digital comb filter.

I sold three of these and hated the picture. It's hard to describe but they just had a "dirty" picture to them. One of my customers constantly complained about it and I made several house calls (he was close to my store) and I adjusted the two focus controls and set the customer adjustments best I could. I blamed it on the "blown up" picture on the big 35" tube.

Next year, RCA changed the chassis a bit (there's probably two dozen variants of the 169) the picture on these were drop dead gorgeous. Smooth video very well detailed. No hard edges, no ringing - just sharp detail and smooth as well. I ordered two more, and brought one home and gave the other to my dad.

I pulled the schematics and noticed that RCA had replaced the digital comb filter sub board for an analogue one. About this time my customer with the 1991 called again and this time I called RCA about procuring a 1992 169 chassis to swap into my customer's TV - no dice.

I had my customer call RCA customer relations and RCA called me back. I explained what happened and how this guy called at least half a dozen times, and I never billed RCA for the calls because there was nothing wrong. RCA ended up having me field-scrap the whole TV, and they shipped a 1992 model in it's stead. I had to send the chassis back to RCA along with the model/serial tag cut off the back cover.

My customer loved the new model. My point of is that anyone looking to get a 169 must watch out for that first year.

Some more boring stuff:

About 5 years later I pulled a 169 in for repair that had the original digital comb filter, and I had a later 169 scrap chassis. I ended up swapping in the analogue comb filter for the original digital, but this was a bigger project than I thought. There were probably 10 or more SMD parts that had to be added or removed on the main board to get the comb filter sub board to work, but the picture was great when I finished.

Lastly, I took the original TV that RCA had me field scrap home to store in my basement. I figured I'd run into a chassis someday and have a perfect low hour (8 months) CRT in a beautiful oak cabinet, or use the tube if my 35 upstairs ever got weak. It did finally get weak, but but the time my original 35 tube went bad, we were into the flat screen era, so I never moved the chassis to the console.


So, if anyone in the Connecticut area wants a mint 35" Invar dual focus tube with the bonded yoke, you're welcome to come get it.

Boring? Not so much to me. Might explain my set's issue. This set is much plainer, and cheaper looking than an equivalent RCA Colortrak 2000, so maybe the video quality is just not as good. My set is technically a CTC 166CS chassis. No idea what the differences are between a 166 and a 166CS, but were I to guess, they're cost saving differences.

And Zeno: I have an RF modulator coming in the mail, which will allow me to compare the image to other TV's and rule out a problem with the video source.

Okay I have an update:

Today I finally received my RF modulator. It has enough output to transmit a signal several feet. This absolutely, certainly, without a doubt, gives me the ability to rule out video source and cables.

So I have something of an update here. I found a CTC 146 chassis that does not power up. It appears to have the same U1001 IC and a CRT that is almost identical.


The CTC 166 has an A51ACG14X01 CRT in it.

The CTC 146 has an A51ACG14X02 CRT in it.

So I'm trying to find out of I can either swap the IC or the CRT and rule one or both out.

I'm betting the jungle IC will fix it, but I did on occasion run across a CRT that had a smear that did not show up on the tester.

If it affected all three guns I would be thinking a bit of heater to cathode short, but not on one gun.

In any case, you can eliminate the tube as the problem by swapping the red input wire for the green right at the socket.

The grey scale will shift and the color will be wrong (it will look like bad purity), but if the smear moves to the green, the tube is OK.

Hmm. Would have tried that earlier if I knew that.

But all 3 colors smear far as I can tell.

I'm leaning towards the IC myself. Question is... I have a CTC 146 chassis with that same IC, but that chassis doesn't work. I have no idea if that IC is good or not. Also no idea if the CRT is good or not.

You know, unless a red flag comes up I might just swap the CRT's tomorrow, and just see what happens. If it fails it fails, but at least I'll know.

After that it's probably a smart idea to hunt down a NOS u1001 IC.

and if that doesn't fix it I might just throw it in the trash and wait for another one to come along.

Hoooo. Okay. Okay. First CRT swap I ever did, and the other CRT works.

And my god was this a nailbiter. I have never changed a CRT before, and I really do not like messing with things that could implode if handled carelessly. However this swap was very easy.

I typically don't like RCA bonded yokes because if the picture is tilted, welp you just have to live with it, but it makes purity and convergence setup a non issue. All I needed to do was just plug in wires, and the connectors are all keyed so it would be hard to screw it up.

Apparently the only differences between the A51ACG14X01 A51ACG14X02 CRT's is different connectors for the degauss coil and dag ground assemblies. So I reused the ones from the original CRT.


And... No change. The color smearing is exactly the same.


I believe this rules out the CRT once and for all. This CRT seems to be in good shape, and since the yoke plastic is not as yellowed and not as dirty, I think this CRT has fewer hours on it. Though the brightness seems to be about the same as the original CRT, so I am not sure.

In any case I highly doubt two different CRT's from two different chassis would have the exact same smearing issue, so the problem has to be on the chassis.

Can I do some kind of test to confirm it is the u1001 IC before I attempt to change it? Because that is a big IC with a lot of pins, connected to a lot of solder traces that could lift up and end this adventure.

In fact if I can confirm it is the U1001 IC then the adventure ends right here, because the one source I can find wants $40 for that IC, and cost exceeds value of TV.

By the mid 70s you pretty much had to try hard to get a CRT to implode. It's the earlier stuff that is more dangerous. Newer stuff you don't gotta be tense just don't rush or loose focus and you can't screw up bad enough to cause harm.

Oh I know about removing the cataracts from older CRT's. The rectangular ones from the 60's especially like to implode because the pressure isn't equal on all sides.

I know full well that newer CRT's have very, very thick glass in the front and an implosion band.

I know all this. Logically I know all of this. That's why I even did the swap.

But tell that to the instinctual part of me that still fears an implosion or a 25 KV shock from that anode lead.

I mean I pushed past it. I got it done, and logically I know there is little real danger, but still. First time and all.

Once you've had half as many accidental 25KV shocks as I have it just becomes an annoyance like a bad static shock (some household static shocks have higher voltage and comparable charge involved). The biggest danger of an HV shock from a flyback/CRT, assuming you don't have a heart condition, is the shit you might slam into if you allow it to trigger your reflexes.

Well right now my concern is that u1001 IC. I'd like to know if there is a test I can do, maybe a voltage I can check or something I can measure with a multimeter that will tell me if that IC is bad. If I can at least get a concrete diagnosis then I can put the issue to bed.

Response to an earlier post: First, no way two CRTs would act exactly the same (unless it was mine). So we're talking power ball odds here. Also, I've never seen anything but a perfect picture on an RCA pre-yammed (their term) yoke with regards to purity, convergence, or tilt. Every one was damned near perfect. I only saw one yoke fail in all the years I was an RCA ASC.

The problem with this type of issue is that often our eyes are far better instruments than a scope would be. In other words, you may not even see the problem with the scope. This is one of those times when a parts swap is the best option.

If it was in my shop, I would have replaced the jungle chip, but then, we used to stock parts when these were in their heyday. If you've never worked on surface mount stuff, it can be daunting.

What is the number on the chip? Sometimes RCA just left the original Toshiba or Sanyo numbers on them, other times they were stamped with a partial RCA drawing number. If I have one, you're welcome to it.

But here is the problem.

I tried removing the chip from the CTC 146 donor chassis as it uses the same IC. I literally do not have the dexterity to get that chip out without damaging traces.

The problem is RCA bent several of the pins, I guess to hold the chip on the board, and trying to desolder them wiped out the traces on the donor chassis.


So... If I can;t make a concrete diagnosis, and I can't compensate for the bad IC, then my only recourse is to put it back together and wait for another chassis to come along.

I now know the CRT is good. I also know it can work with other chassis. It will likely work in any 20 inch Colortrak 2000 set from 1991 to 1992.

So if I find another one with a bum CRT I have options.

$40 is ridiculous for that IC. Look in the Sams & see if they list a sub.

ONLY use high Q solder wick. We used chemtronics in the day.
Use a pick to pry up the bent pins. Working to slow will lift etch.
Use enough heat ! Just watch out for the SMD's nearby. My hands
shake like a paint mixer but I can change them fast. Its all in the
technique.......

So here is where things stand with this thread:

TV is probably not fixable due to a 64 pin u1001 IC that is frankly not worth the labor to try and fix.

The CRT is verified good, and verified because I actually got to swap in another CRT and it had the exact same issue. At this point the odds are it is that IC. So that is my diagnosis. And at least I came to a diagnosis.


Now I do have an addendum. This CTC 166 has one of those degauss thermistors. You know, the ones that like to separate from their leads? And it separated from the leads.

I replaced it with the thermistor from the CTC 146 donor chassis, which is a much better thermistor, in that it has a coating on it like disc capacitors have, to keep the leads from breaking off.

The CTC 146, despite being a cheaper set, has a better degauss thermistor than even high end RCA sets.

Go home RCA, you're drunk.

Heheh.. depends on the vendor used during the year. I just grabbed one of those green coated thermistors out of a 169 (which generally had the silver one) to use on a customer's mid nineties Zenith console which he insisted I repair for him.

The thermistors probably cost the same regardless of construction.

If you're traveling through Connecticut I'll swap that IC for you in 5 minutes.

I'm in Michigan, so can't work that out I'm afraid. I'd ship the chassis to you, but shipping cost exceeds value of TV.

Odds are I will find another one some day. I am still finding CRT sets in the trash. Just yesterday I found a 13" Memorex set from 2002 that looks to be very clean and very low hours.
