View Full Version : 1974 AS 120W RCA B&W Portable TV Repair

Hello everyone! This is my first post so bear with me. Also, let me know if I posted this in the wrong place so I can post it somewhere else.

So I recently found an old TV in my grandma's garage. I plugged it in and found that the only channel I could get was when the main dial was set to 0 and the lower fine-tuning dial was set to just below 28. But, all I could get was audio. I tried it with an antenna attached to the VHF leads and to the UHF leads. I still only got audio. Next, I took apart the TV and looked inside (I discharged the CRT safely) then noticed that a lot of the vacuum tubes and their inside bits looked pretty worn out (this TV had been used a lot). So I decided to take out all of the tubes. But, since I'm an idiot, I forgot to mark which tube went where, and some of them are different tubes but have the same sized socket. I went to a local surplus store and got replacement tubes (most likely never used) but I don't know which sockets to put them in. I have searched all over for schematics or something. There are 9 tubes all together. Any tips on if there is some sort of indication as to which tube goes where.

EDIT: I found out that one tube is MISSING. There's 10 slots but I only pulled 9 tubes. The missing tube is a 4KT6 tube. On the schematic it says that it is a 1st PIX IF

There probably was nothing wrong with it to begin with the analog OTA broadcasts it was meant to receive stopped around 2009 (do the words DTV transition ring a bell?)... The only way that is getting a signal is it you hook it to a DTV converter box, cable/sat box, VCR/DVD player, or an older game console...

Most tubes look burned out whether new or used...People tend to mistake the black factory getter blotch inside the glass for signs of burnout, but those blotches are normal and meant to be there...The only time they indicate trouble is when they turn white...It means the seal of the glass was broken letting air get in.

Most tube TVs have a tube layout chart stuck inside the back, on the inner sides, inside the top or pasted outside on the bottom. each tube should have an ID number that consists of 1-2 digits, 2 letters and a digit (Such as 6GH8, 17DW4, etc). Match the tube number to the numbers in the circles on the chart and the circles on the chart will match the positions of the sockets.

Thanks for the tip. I should have done my research before trying to take it apart. I knew about the getter burnout but some of the tube's inside filaments were broken/snapped.

EDIT: I found the schematic inside the case. I placed all of the vacuum tubes in and realized there was one that I never had. Also, a box was mislabeled at the store I went to and now I have to go back for that tube and the one I was missing.

What am I missing here? The tv is a series string set... with one tube missing, it can not function at all, and yet sound was heard??? :scratch2:

Well, turns out I was a complete numpty and dropped the tube under a table. I just found it about 10 minutes ago and put it into it's socket. Everything's good now. I also used pressurized air to clean it all out and its as good as new-ish.
