Hi All. Yesterday I inherited a 1986 Samsung 19" color set. A good friend of the family passed away unexpectedly last week :tears: and his spouse is working through the grief by cleaning out old stuff. Today i feel like working on the set and clean the brightness, contrast, color, hue and tuner controls. It turns out the crt shows weak so i dig out the CR70 and run it through a auto restore cycle. The crt comes back to life with decent brightness, for now at least. I didn't know that Samsung made tv's for the US market back in 86. Here are a couple of pics of the set.

I got one of these, still works, though mine is all silver on the front including the tuner area, so it's a slightly different version.

It's not a bad TV, but the NTSC decoding leaves a bit to be desired.

It could be silver, there is a lot of smoke residue inside. It took several tries to clean the crt face. :smoke:

Didn't this outfit make a set that had a 19" color set, along with 2 or 3 5" B/W screens as well, about this time ? My weak little mind is telling me that they did.

I went back in time to some older VK posts, Sampo made one and Nordmende made a 4 screen unit.someone else thought Hitachi made one.

I would guess Samsung & Gold Star showed up abt 1980.
First few were total trash clones but they slowly improved.
By the end of CRT's Samsung was built about as good as
any & GS was a little behind.

These 80s Korean sets are surprisingly hardy...Usually simplistic and a bit behind the times, but surprisingly hardy nonetheless.

this was about at the end of my repair career.those sets were good performers and delivered an excellent picture.low price but a real bargain.

They also made B&W sets too, I had a two 1984 12 inch models, a 1985 12 inch model, and I forget what year, but also a 5 inch model. In hindsight I wish I knew how to repair TVs when I was a teenager (I had a horde of TVs anyway) because one of my 1984 ones was chucked when it had an odd failure of the left third of the picture being duplicated across the screen.

Samsung did have a lot of flyback failures in their Eighties sets. They were generally considered low end and not much on styling.

Samsung made VCR's for RCA and GE. Man, were they nasty! :thumbsdn:

All this Korean stuff was cheap junk in the 80's and slowly started improving throughout the 90's
