View Full Version : Rescued a Sylvania Superset!
Decided to go on a shopping spree today and buy stuff I don't need with money I don't have. Hit up 4 shops, and nothing. About ready to call it a day and go home, when I decided to go to one more shop that I rarely go to. At the very back, all sad and lonely, I spied a console TV marked $14.99. I felt so sorry for it, since I know nobody would have bought it. Turns out to be an April 1987 Sylvania Superset. I remember hearing the name Superset on here a few times, anybody have an opinion on these? I'm going to go pick it up tomorrow.
mr_fixer 11-08-2017, 07:31 PM Great Picture and Impressive looking cabinet. How could you go wrong for $15.
$15 is less than the sales tax on a Walmart cheapo flatscreen tv.
After I paid for it, I realized that I had gotten the set for 30% off. So make that $10.50.
mr_fixer 11-08-2017, 08:50 PM Do you know what is amazing? I looked up old newspaper ads for that rca i found on monday, it was on sale for $399 in 1976, using a inflation calculator that is the same as $1594 in 2017 money , I found an ad for a 80's Superset in the deluxe cabinet similar to yours for $700+ which is around the same $1600 today. both sets lasted more than 30 years yet if you spend $1600 today the thing will have croaked within 10 years max use. Just my 2 cents worth, Mike
dishdude 11-08-2017, 08:57 PM Nice looking set. Stereo?
Nice looking set. Stereo?
Yes. With bass and treble controls.

Dang. Now I feel even better. I saved $690!
I forgot to mention that this thing also has the dbx sound-system.
Marco-nix 11-09-2017, 10:24 AM Very nice lookin' set but unfortunately. i don't like Sylvania. However the set has a great picture . Is it not the brand where the CRT becomes so weak that we hardly see the image anymore?
Electronic M 11-09-2017, 10:32 AM Sometime ago I scrapped a roadside 80's stereo Sylvania. Early solid state/deltagun sets are about the only SS I'll take.
Finally got the set home and set it up. The picture tube was on the weak side, so I used the trusty CR70 and it brought it back almost to brand new.
One very weird thing about this set, is that it does not turn all the way off when you push the power button. I can faintly hear the horizontal running, and there is a very quiet sound through the speakers. What gives?
TVTim 11-09-2017, 07:33 PM Looks like a great catch.
The set looks great and has a nice picture now. I'm impressed that it has all the tone controls too.
Enjoy it!!

It's the standby supply - I used to have the training nomograph for the SMPS in your set. Philips addressed the low level oscillator noise with "it's normal."
What is the specific chassis?
I forgot to check the chassis number. I probably won't be inside it for a while either, unless something breaks. It's set up in the living room as our new daily watcher.
sampson159 11-10-2017, 08:17 PM these sets were the end of an era.sylvania was no longer a factor by this time.most people were still watching the great chromacolors or xl100s and these sets didnt move well.very good picture and decent sets.for the money you paid, this is a real bargain
Gave it a true test this evening while I ate my pizza...
consoleguy67 11-11-2017, 09:17 AM So that's why I feel this way!!

I hear ya buddy... ITS HARD ISNT IT??
Congrats on your superset :)
Thanks, and yes. I have a horrible habit of spending every penny I have before I even have it. My area is an estate sale free zone at the moment, or else I'd probably be there spending money.
