There is an Rca victor b&w portable TV set on eBay does anyone know of these sets, if they are worth restoring or even the crt if they are know to be good or reliable. I think it may be a 9 inch and looks like it may be from the very early 60s.

Is this the set you are referring to? I've got one in white. It wasn't too bad of a restoration. It's an adequate performer. I set mine next to my computer and used to watch the morning news on it but grew tired of the small screen.

Sams 336-14 covers it. It does have a power transformer. For the right price, they do seem to move an ebay, but I have seen some overpriced.

Yup that's the one but I'm not looking to get that one but rather a friend of mine has an antique store and I'm going to try to get it for 50.00 . Is it a 9 inch and what do you know about the crt , reliable and would you have the crt number of that tube . Is it a tube set or solid state from the early 60s .

That set is from 1956-57, very well built set, pain in the butt to work on, all tubes, no Solid State.

CRT's are usually good, out of thirteen I've had only one had a weak tube, 8DP4 as I recall, conventional tube, nothing weird or experimental about it.

Yoke cover is almost always rotted off on these, that complicates things because the centering rings are mounted on it and where it's located it makes it almost impossible to do a hack repair on them.

That is the RCA 8-PT series, decent little TVs but not a joy to work on if you don't like cramped chassis. This article has a bunch of restoration notes:

The 8YP4 is a 110 degree CRT with the skinny neck.
I've seen an 8XP4 which is a test CRT used as a sub. It works, but no external aquadag coating and has a thiner glass bulb. :scratch2:

If you're worried about the CRT just plug the set in and see if the CRT lights up, pretty much every one I have would at least make a raster as found.

At least the aquadag is easy enough to add.

The set shown does NOT look like it will need a CRT...that line looked plenty bright...UNLESS....it is BURNED .

A friend of mine loves these and restores them to perfection. I got a black one from him on the tripod stand and it performs very well. It's one of the few vintage TV's that I have/had that doesn't give me the slightest problem. It seems to still be one of the most common vintage TV's around.

I don't know if it needs the crt or how good the one is that's in it as I didn't get it yet. But yes it's kind of planning ahead just in case the tube is bad. I don't even know if 50.00 is worth paying for it.

I likewias have had 3 of thse..>THINK I still have one or maybe 2...ALL of them have had good tubes. One 'worked" but drifted BADLY--needed caps no doubt.

As far as 8" sets go I LIKE these, they are COLD...compared to GE and Admiral and such which are ALL HOT.

You can collect them in several colors.... the black model with stand is an 8PT7032...the one shown here was my childhood set.
