View Full Version : Microwave oven with built-in B/W TV?
rpm1200 09-22-2015, 09:14 AM Hi all, trying to remember if this was a real thing or something from a fever dream. :boring:
Was there a microwave oven with a built-in knob-tuned black and white TV? I'm thinking this would have been something I saw in Sears around 1980 or so. Maybe it was one of the woodgrain Kenmore models manufactured by Sanyo (like the attached picture, but with a TV added to the control panel area). Google image search is not returning anything, also no luck at wishbookweb.com.
Thanks!
Eric H 09-22-2015, 10:05 AM It seems unlikely given the amount of RF noise a Microwave puts out, it'd be tough to shield TV from all that.
There was a multi screen Sampo TV that had three small screens on the right side, perhaps that's what you remember?
Dude111 09-22-2015, 12:47 PM Ya I dont think it would work!!!!! -- When a microwave is turned on,it emits all kinds of RF! (May be possible to shield it but it wouldnt be cheap)

That is definitely a possibility... although I think I remember seeing one of those tri-screen Sampos as a prize on some game show around the same time, so I did know of its existence.

Makes sense... If this really existed it would be a pretty stupid idea. Of course, lots of stupid ideas have been put out there (for example, the touchscreen PC built into the refrigerator a few years ago).

OK, now I need to see this thing. A color TV and a cassette player? They probably sold in the single digits.
wa2ise 09-22-2015, 01:54 PM Back in the 80's, when microwaves became big, I was in a Sears appliance shop, and as a goof, I asked the salesgirl if the microwaves came with remote controls. Like TV sets. :D
rpm1200 09-22-2015, 01:58 PM The model number is 564.8998310 and there's even a SAMS: https://www.samswebsite.com/en/photofact/details/index/id/162432

Wow that thing's weird. At least the screen is nice and big.
Looking at the SearsPartsDirect page for the Sears microwave, the screen appears to be pretty small (5-inch?). There are stereo downward-firing speakers on the bottom of the microwave, at the left and right sides. Other than the speakers, all of the TV and tape player electronics are enclosed in a metal cage to the side of the microwave control panel. (Hopefully that was sufficient shielding to reduce RFI during microwaving!) The tape player appears to be a cheap car deck. Unfortunately the SearsPartsDirect page only has exploded views, no overview picture of what the whole mess looked like.
rca2000 09-22-2015, 03:02 PM I KNOW...sears had one. Because in the late 1980S...till spring of 92..I WORKED for the Blue Ash service center--mainly on tv, VCR'S stereo and such..but ALSO on Microwave ovens. I DO remember a service manual showing that MWV...but I do NOT recall SEEING one. I KNEW it was a COLOR tv...By "83...A BW tv would NOT have been that popular as a "gimmick" for a MWV...
Findm-Keepm 09-22-2015, 03:28 PM 564 prefixed Kenmore=Sanyo. Any body know the equivalent Sanyo model?

Add a video camera and watch the popcorn pop in living color!
Findm-Keepm 09-22-2015, 03:49 PM Turns out, I have the manual on microfiche. Here's a crappy photo..
The cassette unit is a front-loader, like a car dash cassette, and is serviceable separate from the unit. TV is a Sanyo, no surprise there, with the 564.-prefix.
Actually has a place. Especially with LCD in door.
One travel trailers #2 in those new 1 room micro houses.
More I am sure.

Olorin67 09-22-2015, 08:25 PM with a flat screen in the door, you could style the whole thing to look like a porta-color :) make popcorn and watch a movie on the same device.

Add a beer tap or some provision to make jello shots and they'll fly out the doors.....:thmbsp:
