Set is long gone. I still have the old-style descrambler box that came with it.

Interesting mongrel TV:scratch2:. Only other tin can 19" i remember
from that era were some Sanyos. Side handles also a Sayno feature
along with Sony. A few others on a not regular basis. Cabinet
looks Hitachi / Gold Star. Knobs look Quasar but inside FT
knobs can be attributed almost anywheres. IMHO it probably
should say "assembled by Electrohme" not made for sure.

This was a freebie. I was expecting a Korean set because of the "Candle" name, but I noticed on the back label that it was made *for* Jutan International Limited in Canada rather than by them, and the knobs looked like those on Hitachi sets of that era, so I had to open it right away. Bingo, Hitachi-labeled jug, and a label inside the cabinet that says it was made by Electrohome.

The cabinet is metal, unusual for a set of this era. I haven't hooked up my CRT tester yet but it looks strong.

No sign of a chassis number on the back. Model is JCTV2312 Candle.

That's a Jerrold StarCom 7v converter and an analog flat-pan descrambler box on top. They came with the set. I had been wanting one of those descramblers for display purposes. I hadn't seen one in I don't know how many years.

The flat pan descrambler worked rather well, at that time.

'tis a Tatung - I had the same set, just different badging.

I got my Tatung from an auctioneer, but we had the same set in our shop when I was on the Forrestal.

Does your set have the manual degauss button on the back? I believe it was a custom feature. Also, does the VHF tuner still have the white label? That's a giveaway as well - the part number on it is a Tatung part number.

No manual degauss. Couldn't spot a white tag on the VHF tuner. Definitely a Japanese set. A tag on a heat sink looks like it says it was manufactured by The General Corporation in Tokyo, Japan. I'm pretty sure it says "general" in there, that part's really faded. Chassis number on that tag is FCC 20370 and the chassis model number is 38-7JL909-01. Tag on the inside of the cabinet says Mfd. by Electrohome in Kitchener Ontario.

Well, I just spent quite a bit of time cleaning the grime and filth out of it. I didn't use a work light so it took me some time to realize I had gotten through the dirt and was removing aquadag. :dammit: I didn't think that stuff would come off with glass cleaner and paper towel.

The CRT checks okay except for the life test. I hooked it up to cable, makes a fantastic pic with the brightness and contrast high enough. Going to try some cathode cooking. There's quite a bit of noise from the HV area after it's been on for a few minutes, got to try to pinpoint that. Pincushion needs adjustment, not sure how to do that.

I agree its a Tatung. Saw few of them all 13" IIRC.
They seemed to be well built & good pix.
Very much a Hitachi clone. Even uses the yellow lettered
tags on wires, very Hitachi. PCB looks Hitachi but metal
frame & HV area dont. Probably uses Hitachi IC's also
( HA#### ).

Yup, Hitachi ICs, they have the logo too. One IC has a big "T" on it.

CRT wasn't asleep, just worn. I have another one I hope will work in it when it needs one. HV seems low, just over 20k.

Yes, a Tatung Hitachi clone. Arguably the best of the cheapie sets of the day. Usually reliable most of the time. Not bad sets.

Had it been a regular crappy Korean import it would have hit the bricks by now. It's so unusual that it's one of very few 80s sets worth keeping and fixing up in my opinion.

I was told that it was originally purchased at the Co-op in Chéticamp in 1985 for $400.

I had a 19" Candle set from the mid 80's, glossy black plastic cabinet, no woodgrain. Gave it to a friend in college...it was 15 y/o and still working fine and I know it was not a low-hour set. Never opened it up. It's still the only Candle set I've seen in person.
