One of the engineers at the local TV station found this Sony KV1204A from March, 1977 on the junk floor and gave it to me. It belonged to one of the engineers, who suddenly passed away a couple of years ago, and his family never claimed any of his stuff. So, now they want it out of the way.

Besides being a little dusty, it's in nice shape and looks to have a strong CRT. The only problem I see is a near-collapse of the vertical; which, is probably due to bad capacitors. While I'm in it, I'll probably replace any electrolytic capacitors in the horizontal circuit and power supply.

Replace all 160V and 250V capacitors in the set, 7 of them IIRC. That chassis and it's brethren are all famous for the 4.7uf 160V cap in the vertical circuit failing, along with a 4.7 250V and a 33uf 160V cap in the B+, C531. The last two will cause all sorts of problems - dead set, pulling(flagging) horizontal, hum in the sound, tuning issues, and vertical rolling. The vertical sweep cap causes pulldown, collapse, or poor linearity.

Once you've replaced the caps, you'll have a set that will last for years.

Did you make a video about this set ? i'm interested how you going to work on it...I now have 2 models...KV-1204 and a KV-9200 that i'm going to keep..;)

Andy, it's pobably due to the humidity..or sun..

My non-working KV-1723 hasn't a hint of cataract, but the vinyl faux-wood overlay on the side is peeling up from the bottom about an 1/8th of an inch. I'll have to check my late fathers' old KV-1210 - it's in storage in his detached garage.

I'd imagine that the cataracts form with exposure to sunlight or temperature extremes more than age.

I tore into this set again tonight. At first, I had reduced vertical sweep. Then, the vertical deflection decreased down to nothing but a horizontal line. I found a dried out 2.2uf, 160V capacitor in the vertical circuit and both vertical output transistors are shorted.

2SC867s or 2SC1034s? I may have a few used-but-good ones..
