So, I picked up another one of these (the one in the last pic). It has no vertical deflection. I'll have a little time to work on it in March, usually these Zenith B&W sets aren't too difficult to fix.

But I thought now I might nearly have one of these in every style cabinet Zenith made them in, so I thought I would post them all.

1. 1960 17" SC300 - 16D25Q (uses the tube remote chassis and the gold colored remote)

2. 1962 19" SC300 - 16H25Q H2214 (uses the tube remote chassis and the gold colored remote)

3. 1963 19" SC300 - 16K27QS K2214 (has the newer transistor remote chassis and the silver remote)

4. 1966 19" SC300 - 14M27 N2231 (has the newer transistor remote chassis and the silver remote) - It works, I just didn't have a pic showing it working on my computer.

5. 1967 19" SC300 - 14M28Z N2210 (has the newer transistor remote chassis and the silver remote)

I am pretty sure of the relative sequence, but not 100% sure of the exact years. I know there's a correspondence between the letters D - H/H - K/K - M/N M/N and the years, but I don't think it is always 1 letter to 1 year? As far as the cabinets go, I think 59/60 were the same, then 61/62, then 63/64, then 65/66, then 67-? Again, I'm not completely sure. I think they switched the from the gold to the silver remote when they switched from the tube to the transistor remote chassis in '63.

Has anyone ever seen a 19" Zenith B&W with a remote in the metal cabinet newer than the one in the rightmost pic? I once had a '71 Zenith 19" B&W with the SC100 in a plastic cabinet that I parted out (At the time I had no idea how rare that was, now I really wish I had kept it).

There was a 21" tin can "portable" in the mid 70's.
I dont think they came remote. Twas all tube chassis &
weighed a ton. Plastic ruled by then.
IIRC even the first 2 SS chassii ( rare) didnt come remote.
Would have been a $250-$300 set, too much for a B&W.

The last set shown, has the 14m28 chassis. That chassis also came in a plastic cabinet, but not remote of course.
Zenith outdid themselves, with those models. :thmbsp:

Here is some from my friend Danny. The brown one is a newer model than the one you posted and uses a 14Z26 chassis and the tubes have a 1968 code date on them. The older set is rather unusual because it has a space command 400 remote with the bi-directional channel change and the mute feature that usually was only on the 23 inch black and white or color sets. I thought he might be interested in seeing them.

I didn't even think they made any 19" portables with the SC400, that's the first one I've ever seen. I've never seen one of those remote 68 models before either.

Looking at the dates on the tubes, and on the sams and factory manuals, it looks like my new set is actually a 65 and not a 67. So it's older than my 66, I had assumed 14M28 would come after 14M27.

I do have a 1971 23" metal cabinet b/w Zenith, no remote. The newest metal cabinet Zenith I've seen was a 1983 25" sys 3 I used to have. I haven't seen many of the 19" Zeniths with the remote, metal or plastic, b/w or color, from the late-60s to early-70s. I've had a few 19" color Zeniths with the vertical chassis that had the remote, but never found a 19" color with the remote that had either the 4 tube hybrid or the all tube chassis.

Here's a picture of one just like the 71 with the SC100 I had.

I wish I could find one of those again; but, it will likely never happen, since these later model large screen B&W's are very rare.

I may not have a large screen solid state Zenith B&W; but, I have two Sylvania solid state 22" B&W consoles, one is from '78 and the other one is from 1980.

I think, Zenith quit making B/W crt's in the 70's.
I worked on a '73 model compact console, that had the old style chassis, we all know and love. The CRT developed an intermittant, after about four years.
The old style CRT, the 23", 90 degree, that Zenith used for years was made by Clinton, EIA 1240. Little wonder. :tears:

I have a circa 59-60, 21" Zenith Space Command in a plain gray metal cabinet, I wouldn't really call it portable though, unless you have a Forklift handy.

I had one too.... I didn't like it because the scan lines seemed
really visible but it was a clear sharp picture... Metal, with a kinda
grain in the vinyl - good quality...

Somewhere, I have the Sam's Photofact on one of Zenith's last 22" B&W consoles from 1980-'81.

I picked up some binders of Zenith manuals, which cover B&W Zeniths 53-66. After going through those, I now know my new Zenith is a '66. The years I gave for my other 4 Zeniths were correct. I had assumed the cabinet of my other '66 was specific to the year, but I saw pictures of that cabinet used on earlier pre-uhf models. It seems that cabinet was perhaps just a used for a more deluxe model with 2 speakers over several years.

My new Zenith is now working. The lack of vertical just turned out to be a dirty hold control. But I still recapped all the electrolytics and replaced those vertical integrators (which I've found to be a common problem in these sets). I also had a sound problem, the sound would intermittently go soft and be replaced by a loud buzzing. It turned out to be the 6J10 tube itself. You could actually see something rattling around in the tube. All the remote stuff worked as found (although I didn't get this set with it's remote). I still have to try and line up the channel number light better, I can never seem to get those to project the number right in the center of the window like they should...
