Has anyone worked on this type of Magnavox? I seen this at a antique shop about 2 months ago and I recently got a message from the seller after I posted an advertisement on craigslist. He had a $135 for the price but said he would go down. What do you think is fair value? Is this an easier set to work on or should I avoid it?

I remember them but dont remember the guts.
IIRC it had a stand up chassis, not as easy as a Zenith
but not terrible.
Nothing special about it so no true value beyond how bad
you want it. Be sure the CRT is REAL good at any price.

It seems like every Magnavox large screen B&W from the '50's and '60's that I've gotten had a very weak CRT. So, make sure it's good before handing over any money. If the CRT is good and the cosmetics are decent, I'd offer no more than $50 and I'd still try to get it cheaper if I could. If the CRT is bad, I don't know that I'd take it at any price.

I also have the console version and its a good performer. I agree that the crt needs to be checked before handing over any money. I paid $50 for mine 5 years ago. Its been a reliable set.

I had two of these over the years. Both had CRT'S strong enough to make a nice picture but not real bright like and RCA, Zenith, Admiral or Motorola. Zeno is right about the vertical chassis and these were power transformer sets that used common tubes.

One of the Mags was a 21" press-board brown table model like that one with knobs on top.
I could find no sam's listing for it though it had a model number tag, and it had arcing on the Horizontal output Tube Socket, and no vertical sweep.
The CRT tested fair and I sold it for $15 at a swap meet.

The other was a console with the same knobs and it had only a weak 5U4, I never recapped it and had wonderful sound and made a decent picture.

I have that set. Have had it for 15 years or so. Unfortuneatly it has a busted picture tube on it.

I went to the antique store with my variac to do a slow power on and I got a raster from the TV. Bought it for $40. For those that have it what if any tags did your unit have on the back? The owner before me taped the model number but it is missing the others. Could someone take a photo of the back of the TV?

After opening the back I found pop-ice wrapper with a photo of popeye, but not much else out of the ordinary.

My Magnavox is 1MV121 L - Run Number 4.
At home hooked up my vcr and roku and I did a test power on. After messing with some of the controls I was able to get somewhat watchable video but I can tell there is a lot of work to be done with caps and resistors.

mine is chassis u25-03a. sams 402-2 according to the index. number was stamped to the chassis itself

I would not say there is a lot of work to be done, looks good to me.

The sound was a little distorted, and the pic was a hair short, but I would not start tearing into it.

If it has wax caps then they should be replaced, any across the line cap if used should prob be replaced if its still there (not blown up).

the can caps can be felt to see if they are getting warm, if not I would leave them be.

If its a mid 60's set, then it maybe just find. Tube sets are pretty tolerant about resistor values (in most circuits). So unless there is a problem, replace parts can be a waste of time and may even cause problems (wrong value or damage done in the replacement).

I mostly just clean up dirty pots and see how it performs after warming up a bit.

You can always enjoy it until there is a decline, and then start changing parts...Just don't let it run unwatched. They can decline too far if you do that.

sync separator issue, OR clipping of the signal by the IF. Scope will tell.

Mine is still as found, once i get the sams I will be ordering some caps. It's also washing out the picture on the left side of the screen where the middle and right sides are more normal.

Last night I removed the chassis and when to go clean it up a bit before replacing the caps. I checked the flyback and found it had melted a little bit. Do you think I should reinsulated with rtv silicone like in Philco Model F4626M "Miss America" Television restore or has anyone found something better?

If that happened recently make sure the HO Tube is not red-plating. It does not look terribly bad as far as peeling goes. I'd probably get the chassis working and check to see if the doughnut is arcing to anything. If it is arcing coat it, if not I'd leave it be.

I spent the afternoon recapping my magnavox. Just finished but realized I missed one paper cap when I was ordering new. Have to pick one up locally. Regardless, it looks pretty good. Haven't adjusted the yoke to fill the screen yet.
