nice all tube should be easy to get going. when you said all the cords ripped out I presume you just mean the power cord, not the yoke or CRT connections.

a Good start is to check the condition of the CRT before investing a lot of time and money.

Well opened it up, it is cleaner then I expected. Didn't see any visually bad tubes.

That does look like the chassis! Looks like some repair man or last owner maybe? ripped the tube chart off the side of the cabinet and the chassis number tag!! Least they left the model tag.

looks like an instant on power trans on top of the regular trans. Hope the CRT is ok. The one in the set from the video tested like new, but I don't recall if it had the instant on.

eeppp I hope it is, looks like first order is to find a crt tester....I hope its good, I would like to see it run again and play some original Nintendo on it :D

I had a very kind great Aunt/Uncle who had that kind of furniture (and the same TV). I am sad when people say hurtful things those who chose this kind of furniture (although I know that hasn't been done here...yet). Personally I think it's pretty cool. Obviously of another era, but aint that the point?

there is a good chance it will work just fine as is (most likely the only issue will be dirty pots). that era had pretty good caps in it, including the cans.

If it was mine I would pull the horz out and the vert out tubes, variac it slowly monitor the B+ to see if it comes up, and check to see if the cans get warm, I generally do this over a period of time (hours) to give the cans a chance to reform.

Stop at about 80vac input, there is no load on the B+ with the sweep tubes out.



Pulling the tubes mentioned is done since they are osc tubes and may not like the low power. If all goes well I put the tubes back in, hook up a current meter to the horz out cathode, and a HV prob to the anode and do a full power start, keeping an eye on both the horz out current and the HV. Look for horz current to be around 200ma and the HV not to go over 25kv. If either go too high I shut down and look for problems before trying again.

often wiggling tubes will correct problems, so that should be tried 1st depending on the faults that show up (in case the above startup does not result in a working set). beyond that you have to apply regular diagnosis skills.

Thanks for that! It would be nice if it just powered up with out any issues, not really normal for me :P Its a good thing I bought a huge can of dexoit....so many post and connectors on this thing.

If anyone could supply a sams for it, that would be awesome, I have lightly dabbled in tvs...and never found it really exciting...so it would nice to have some sort of guide on where to probe and the values. This thing looks to have a lot going on inside..

Maggy was notorious for using different chassis in the same
model so you gotta watch it ordering manuals. We only
used chassis #'s, the model is only safe for cabinet parts.
Tag is small maybe 1" by 1/2" usually green or white.
usually right on back of chassis but can be found other places
so look everywhere. If you dont find it & need a manual post
some chassis pictures & tube line-up & prob can find one
very close...

This is identical (99%) to my Magnavox U-911 chassis from '67 which was lost in hurricane Sandy. It makes a great pic. Be sure to 'dip' the cathode current on the 6JE6

I think its a nice looking set, and I like the cabinet a lot. It's got character.....

I sure would like to see pictures of it once you are done with it.....

I think you found it. That "92010" #. It is either a T920 or a U920 I would say T920-10

T-920-10 would be my guess. The U numbers were usually used on the round tube chassis.

My "U" chassis was certainly rectangular..not 1 doubt in my mind.

Ahh so that was the chassis number, sweet....now to hunt down a sams..

Bummer, I just found a whole 887 folder for 16$....Think I might just snap that up. One day I would like to get cd with all the photofacts on it....They are soooo nice to have for restorations and repairs..

Damn it....the seller sent me set 790...I am like why am I only finding chassis for B&W sets...

Though I did stumble on to a magna-color owners manual....lets hope I get the write one...well time to wait another week :(

Well the seller said, that they didn't log the 887 in...so they told me to keep these and issued a refund...so sucks for me, no sams...it was the only one I could find listed for sale....guess maybe I will be paying for a copy....grrrrrrr

The SAMS website costs a bit more but gives instant gratification, you can get it digitally within 24 hours. If you assign some value to your time it's really not a bad deal at all considering what a great service

Do a search for used Sams, you will find a lot that sell them
for 5-10 each. Be sure its a first gen NOT a copy. I dont
know what Sams sends now but I would be very careful
with PDF's etc, they can really suck.

I got one bad PDF from SAMS and they replaced it with a paper copy
For free - other couple have been great. One thing I like about digital copies is I never lose them.

Looks like my T-933. The thing on top of the power transformer is a power supply choke. The tuners can be finick as well as the horizontal blanking tube. If the picture is dark, change that tube first!
Of all my color sets, it has the best "dip" in horizontal tube current.

I know, the thrift store tossed a 600$ counter top microwave/convectional oven combo...I just couldn't say no, it has a bad leaf switch somewhere...there are only like 20..

Projects always cost money, and I am in the waiting stage of disability...so my only income is what I can squeeze off ebay, use to make 70k a year on ebay...then I lost me inventory to fire...moved out here into the middle of no where and can maybe get 400-800 a month :tears:

I wish someone would give me a 500$ gift card to mouser or digikey so I can get them all done :D

I have this book and it helped me with alot of tubed Mags, BUT a pull-out schematic for a T920 is not included, only a T904 - the first rectangular CRT Magna-color.
My fits on these sets always were CRT and video output related. The sound quality on these Mags was 2nd to none!

I have this book, but, mine does not have a T920 schematic. It does have the series 31,37,41,and 45 schematics. These are for roundies. Mine does not say vol. one so it is an older printing. They are a good resource.

I found a nice place right under my work bench, where I will be able to remove the back in a safe area and remove the chassis to test tubes, look at the boards, clean...clean and clean more..

Be thankful you guys have never had arthritis at the age of 30...I do 2 hours of work and I am out for the rest of the day...

I have an old clothes dryer in my bedroom with all my electronic stuff. I had an old microwave/convection oven sitting in the corner for months, also a thrift store find. It's in the kitchen now.

Yup, I'm in a similar financial boat, doing all I can to finally get on my feet. I have a few projects and have been gathering repair supplies as finances permit.
