How the hell do you set these things. A million dials and every little movement makes it worse not better. Cant seem to get them all lined up straight when I turn horizontal deflection off either???

Gotta love the delta-gun sets. Much more challenging to converge, but to me that means more satisfaction in completing the process. I've never actually done it, but many here will be able to help.

Do it by the book either Sams or Zenith.
Keep contrast & brite DOWN, dont want it too brite.
Keep going back to the center.
I assume its an upright chassis, check the convergence PCB for cold
solder joints.
Out of the 1000's of these that came through only maybe 2 needed
repairs for conv. But anything is possable.
Its normal for the service line not to converge, you kill the
vertical pulses the conv circuit needs.

Also is it not like registering a tube camera, converge everything to green, meaning start with green and adjust red and blue to meet the green not the other way around.

agree with zeno use the sams procedure, I assume you have a cross hatch pattern to start with.

You might want to also check the adjustable coils on the convergence assembly. A lot of those plastic coils, break and crumble in the middle, and the winding becomes loose. Also use the procedure in the service manual or Sams. You might also check for continuity of the delta convergence coils on the tube itself, and make sure it is on the tube in the right place and straight with the guns. I have even seen cases that customers have put the delta assembly on backwards. Mainly it just takes time, patience, and keep readjusting the center convergence as needed. I was once told back in 1972 when I went through electronics TV training, that if you can achieve 85% perfect convergence, that's about the best your going to get. Of course a lot of improvements were made since then. Don't mean to disagree with the post above, but converging every thing into the green is what you do on the inline tubes. Also make sure you purity is good, which you set with only the red on at first. Then verify the blue and green. Also make sure the blue lateral magnet is positioned right. Zenith Chromacolor sets are good performers, so stick with it and you will have a nicely converged working set.

I was trying to tweak it and made it worse. I have finally got it a little better say 85 to 90% so im leaving it the hell alone now as per your guidance. Thanks!

those sets are normally very easy to get converged.done many of them and cant remember one that didnt come out less than great.unless someone gets in there with a metal tool of some sort.

If its not noticeable with a normal pix & proper viewing
distance its fine. If just one thing is off say right side
blue there may be a problem BUT usually its obvious &
some controls wont work. Also if it changes on its own.
Also a slightly weak jug will look off sometimes, running things
down low improves that if its the case.
