I may not have known what it was but I was pretty sure it was an early color set and that some one would be excited about it. I'm glad you got it Tim :thmbsp:.

As soon as I saw Binghamton I figured this had you written all over it, Tim. Very nice cabinetry. Hopefully the fact that they plugged it in didn't burn out anything hard to replace.

If I didn't already have a ctc5, I would probably have done the exact same thing,

Good set for someone who said he got out of tube color. All you needed was one that's good enough to bring you around again.

I would have done the same (if able to) for a well-kept example of a set that I wanted.

I think that's the nicest looking cabinet that's ever contained a color TV. :thmbsp:

Congratulations! That's a neat set! I had a CTC-5 Arliss many years ago when I was very young and first got into collecting vintage color TVs. The cabinet needed help, the back was missing, and the CRT had been necked. I loved that set though. It was the first set that, even though it didn't work, really brought the excitement of early color TV to life for me. Got rid of it many years ago, sadly. Yours is the only other one I've seen listed in all this time. Keep us posted as you work on it. Great find!

I live in Syracuse and check the listings daily in Craigslist for Syracuse and surrounding areas. I did not see this one come up. Was it listed for only a few hours?

You may recall I restored a CTC5 Whitby with the Deluxe chassis picked up in Toronto a couple of years ago. I feel the CTC5 is a good set but it has had a bad rap. Perhaps it is because the design had problems with the saggy HV Supply. It is good you have this set as we can open more CTC5 discussion. I have been putting off doing further work on my set and now will pursue this.

It looks like the Arliss has it's original 21AXP22A. Mine did and I was surprised that the tube survived and emission tested excellent. Perhaps the reason the CRT survived was the drooping HV problem which made the picture a bit dim which deterred extra use? I trust the CRT in the Arliss will be good. :yes:

On a side note, the CTC5 and all subsequent RCA vacuum color tube sets, (up and beyond the end of the roundies) employed X-Z color demodulation. Of these, only the Deluxe CTC-5 employed a wide band chroma channel (+1.5/-0.5MHz). The upside of this will be better chroma resolution and the downside will be quadrature crosstalk between X and Z channels. The trade off is interesting and I remain curious the why wideband chroma was dropped in subsequent RCA sets. Was it cost or perhaps no actual technical benefit ?(Wideband chroma would require an extra tube for the required extra amplification).

In any case, as you work on it I look forward to more CTC5 discussions!

Just picked it up! It's in the van, not a scratch on it! Looks mint!! It was at a nice house WAYYY in the woods among some "amazing" homes. One house was a school bus body with the back cut off, and attached to a larger version of Snoopy's doghouse with a locking door on it, I kid you not :eek:

Waiting to meet another VKer for some set swapping shortly. But the 5 is coming home with me :)

While we're waiting for him to come in, my wife is watching Cinderella and I admit that if I hafta sit through this whole movie I'm gonna go insane :D . We've got a suite at the Courtyard Marriott here, then we're gonna go to a froo froo restaurant.

And people wonder why my wife has no issues with any TVs I wanna buy ;) . It's balance, gentlemen :D

Well, I'm home now. $180 in gas and 3.5 hours each way in my big old van. Good thing I met up with another VKer to get some good stuff :)

The set is almost spotless inside save a light layer of dust, and has a Utah speaker in it, much to my surprise. Someone very carefully made a homemade back for this set. It was very well loved.

Tested the 21AXP22. No filament light. Stone dead.

Damn :(

I don't think that's a huge problem, a compatible CRT ought to be an easier find than the set itself.

Congratulations. Glad it was you that scored that rare Arliss and made that listing disappear so quickly. And w/UHF as a bonus. I'm sure you'll locate a roundie tube although a good testing 21AX would be a plus. Watching PGA golf on my CTC-5 Wingate right now.

if all three are out, maybe try reflowing the pins, check for continiuty just in case your CRT tester is acting up as well.

I hate to be the voice of doom and gloom but dead heaters in a 21AXP is likely due to the tube going to air, pull the yoke and see if the getter is white, It's located in a thin band between the inside Dag around the neck.

I'm going to guess that it's not the pins. This socket is on the neck very solidly. It'll be a couple days before I'm able to do any more work on it, as the set is still in the van, and I have no idea where it's going in the house. But then again, I didn't even know where it would go when I bought it :para: :D

I have a few good all glass crts if you want to convert it for now till a metal crt comes around.

Phil, did you ascertain where the leak actual occurred on your 21AXP22A? Eg did you see any cracks or did it likely leak from the metal to glass seal?

Well, since the picture tube had gone to air, I ended up making a trade deal on it, giving up hope of ever finding a picture tube for it. In fact, many of you saw it up on ebay as he decided to sell it after giving up hope himself.

This past weekend, an unexpected and special thing happened. A TV friend who I went to see (don't know if he wants to be named :) ), came across a BRAND NEW IN THE CARTON 21AXP22A! Dated 1969! With the original warranty card, and 100% perfect emission!

This particular guy (who is a man among men....really!) generously offered me the tube. One of those God or karma moments, depending on what you believe. I was astonished, but one problem....nothing to install it in :sigh:

Through yet another swap deal, I'm getting my Arliss back, it's getting this brand new picture tube, and I'll have (hopefully) a working CTC-5....with a BRAND NEW picture tube!

So excited!!! It's like a dream come true :yippy:

Incredible!! I can't wait to see the Arliss with a brand new 21AXP22A!

This gives hope to the rest of us that stuff like this is still out there :yes:

Dont throw that 21AX dud away. The leak can be located and repaired. Someone has already repaired the leaks on a 21AX. There are a couple very talented people working on these issues behind the scenes. Some day your tube may be valuable as a rebuild-able dud.

Who was the re-builder of the NOS tube you got? As I recall, Olson Radio used to sell metal tubes that had the metal part painted red.

Y'know, I thought about that, but to be honest the living room is a high traffic area, and I'd rather put the 5 in a place where it can be less disturbed....meaning in the basement.

Interesting.... Stone Mountain, GA is where Southwest Vacuum Devices was located. SWV has closed it's doors, but I understand that VDC (the parent company) is still doing some electron gun work for special clients such as the government.

I wonder if SWV was originally rebuilding, or possibly marketing tubes prior to becoming a maker of guns exclusively?

VDC was formed by purchasing various companies which were related to the manufacturing of CRT's.

I will say this though, I don't think I'll be bringing home any more consoles in the near future :)

She's home! Had to pull the chassis and picture tube to get it in the house easily, but everything's installed back the way it was :)

I'm going to pick up on this one in the fall....for now I want to finish up my RCA 730TV2 and a couple odds and ends. In the fall, I'll mate it up with the NOS picture tube and get to work. All original wax caps below on the chassis, some replaced up top, but it'll get the full treatment when I start to get sick of being outside ;)

After all the sets I've had, this is the last one I really wanted for my collection :)

Yah, ctc-5's are nice looking no matter what cabinet they are in.....
And that one is a Delux, so that and a new tube, should look
really good when yer done !
