View Full Version : Telebar on/off switch issue
bigaudioal 05-06-2014, 11:48 AM So got the channel 7 tuning strip replaced from the donor Admiral tuner I grabbed off eBay and got the below pic with good sound dialed in now. So that was a success. :banana:
I am running the TV without the radio/phono plugged into the TV chassis. Just needed to jumper two pin sockets together of the radio/phono socket plug on the back of the TV chassis.
But it looks as though the on/off knob is not working. Even with the knob "clicked" to the off position the set is on and running as soon as I plug it in. There is no volume obviously b/c that portion of the knob appears to be working fine. So clicking on the knob really just turns up the volume. :scratch2:
Anyone know what my issue may be and how to resolve? Other than the set not turning off, this knob appears to be working in regards to volume and contrast fine.

The green line is the shorting wire that I had to install to run the TV without the radio/phono plug in and the red circle is the TV on/off/volume/contrast knob. I believe shorting socket pins "K" and "L" are for the cathode heater (if I remember correctly from the original Admiral Service Manual I have).
Maybe this will help anyone see what I may need to check out. Or do I just need to crack the switch open and check that out? If so, Could I even fix?

Right, so normally click set on and turn same knob to increase volume. With this control turned off. I plug in set and it goes on even though knob is in the off position.
Manual said to service TV alone, insert a jumper wire between pin sockets "K" and "L" on the radio/phono plug socket on back of TV chassis. This way the TV should just operate alone. I did this to try and figure out if the on/off issue was in the TV chassis or in the radio/phono chassis. So it seems to be the main TV on/off knob that must be stuck on. It still makes the clicking sound and feels normal, but does not power down the set in the off position.
This is a 3 pot piggy back setup off one shaft. At the rear is the on/off switch. Middle is the volume pot and in front is the contrast pot, which operate off a larger knob behind the on/off/volume knob.
Guess I will try and pop the on/off portion of the knob apart and get some lube in there, but it sure feels like it is operating normally. Clicks on turning clockwise and then keep turning to increase volume. Turn counter clockwise and volume decreases to nothing just before the "click" off. Except the click off does not turn the set off. Just keeps running with no volume obviously.
Electronic M 05-06-2014, 04:17 PM The click is usually a mechanical detent on the control shaft rather than the switch so the switch contacts could be completely removed and the control would still click.
It's not uncommon for the contacts to stick in a position (on or off depending on design and position it was in when it stuck). And provided the contacts did on weld them selves on or the mechanism that actuates them got damaged it should be a easy fix with some lubricant.
A back up plan if it is worse than a contact sticking is to send it to a control rebuilder(there are one or two good ones in the radio collecting community that will do TV controls too).

bigaudioal 05-06-2014, 08:26 PM Brilliant!!! So got home and hooked up my meter to the on/off switch. Should be a 250K switch. Reading was infinite while turning on and off. So I squirted the only spray lube I had (WD-40) all over the switch while clicking it on and off. Nothing at first, but then kept working the switch and all of a sudden bingo! 265k when off and infinite when on. Think that did it.
I am having some horizontal synch issues so testing and replacing resistors and maybe a few micas in that section before firing the set back up, should get that done before the weekend. Thanks again!!!
jr_tech 05-06-2014, 08:45 PM 250k switch??? I think you must have been measuring the pot. A switch should be zero ohms when "on" and infinite when "off". The switch terminals should be at the rear of the pot/switch assembly.

bigaudioal 05-06-2014, 08:50 PM You are correct! The 250k was the volume section of the switch and the power section is infinite and zero now. My bad. Both have been improved greatly by lubing and working them.

bigaudioal 05-06-2014, 09:34 PM Okay, I have described my situation above pretty well with the jumper wire in and the radio not hooked up to the TV. I just shot a little video, at the below link, that shows you the symptoms I have with everything plugged in. Take a look. The radio and television seem to have separate on-off knobs. There is no selector switch on the set anywhere to switch between one set and the other, Just their separate on/off knobs.

There are 2 sets of contacts on the back of the switch. And someone definitely messed with them in the past. Not original solder, but does not appear that the switch has been disassembled at any point. It is possible that the shaft was taken apart and reassembled improperly. If you watch my video the off position of the knob does not match up with the off "mark" at the 9 o'clock position on the control panel. My other Admiral console. When it is off, the knob position is horizontally lined up from 9-3 o'clock position. This one is off, which is fishy. Is there even a way to remove the shaft and put it back in incorrectly so it would cause it not to line up with the stock off position and to give a backward reading on a meter??
Kevin Kuehn 05-06-2014, 11:37 PM On the TV chassis power switch: One set of contacts should be normally open and the other normally closed. So you need to verify that you have two working sets of contacts(one NO and one NC), and that they both alternate between open and closed when you actuate the TV power switch on the TV volume control. Next make sure the set of contacts that's closed (with the TV switch turned on) connects one side of the AC line voltage to the TV power transformer primary. I'm guessing someone may have unsoldered your switch and has those two sets of contacts exchanged.
But here's the confusing part: There's also a similar dual set of contacts on the radio tone/on-off switch. So when the radio is turned on, one set of the radio contacts also turns on AC line voltage to the primary of the TV chassis power transformer. So you should also check that that set of contacts is not stuck in the closed position (when the radio is turned off). It's also possible to have both the radio and TV turned on at the same time, in which case the TV power transformer gets AC line voltage, but both the radio and TV have selected tube filaments turned off, and so neither should work(I think). Clear as mud? :)
Dave A 05-06-2014, 11:47 PM Follow the lamp wiring also. It is clear that the lamps should only be on with the proper switch position...and wiring. The tv lamp wiring is from the "X" tap. The radio lamp wiring comes from the radio chassis via the "Y" tap. Not sure beyond that.
And I am confused by the jumper. Both sides seem to come back to the "X/Y" tap on the power transformer. Someone bail me out.
Electronic M 05-07-2014, 12:27 AM It may be a good idea to trace and copy the power wiring on the schematic from all sections, paying especially close attention to the switch wiring, on to a single piece of paper, and then go over it and try to under stand what the switches are doing and see if it makes sense.
On a Zenith Space Command remote set I have I had to stare at the schematic for a good 5 minutes to get what was going on with the two power controls...And on that set they had the courtesy to draw the entire PS of it on one page.

I assume the TV should have priority so if the radio is turned on, it will be turned off if the TV is turned on. Beyond that, tis a puzzle... When the TV is on, should the radio perhaps be in "standby" mode with heaters warm, or should it be *dead cold off*. If the radio switch is on, should the radio lights be left on when the TV is on, to perhaps indicate that the radio is in standby? Should the TV be in "standby" or "dead cold off" when the radio is on?

bigaudioal 05-07-2014, 09:56 AM Well, after taking a morning kindergarten class of cutting and pasting - here is the complete Admiral combo unit I have on a one page schematic. It is a PDF file and you can zoom in on it without loosing too much resolution. Assuming it uploads ok here. :D My specific combo is the 21L1 TV chassis combined with the AM/FM radio (5D2 model). I had to cut the radio portion of the schematic and paste it onto this page with the correct TV chassis schematic. But you can see the dotted line separating the two sections and they meet at the PLUG which connects the radio/phono unit into the back of the TV chassis. Looks like I need to concentrate on SW501 (just below the plug diagram on the right side of the schematic). This is the TV on/off switch.
Now based on my above video of symptoms and this schematic, anyone have any plan of attack for me that would yield a solution? I obviously need to trace the wiring in the set from the AC-in line through this switch and make sure everything is hooked up correctly. That is my first step. However, if someone can explain based on this schematic how the set SHOULD operate, that would be a huge help.

When the TV -only- is switched on, the C-D contacts on the TV volume switch disconnect the radio circuit filaments of V601,602,603,604,605 and the two radio pilot lights.
When the radio -only- is on, the C-D contacts on the radio volume switch disconnect filament voltage from V101,102,V201,202,203,V301,303,304,306,V403,405,40 6 in the TV circuit.
Is there a TV pilot light I'm not accounting for?

Yep, there is a pilot light on the front of the TV. On the schematic, it is all the way on the right side, to the right of the AC line plug. Right now, when I plug in the set it is always on and never goes off unless I unplug the set.
bigaudioal 05-07-2014, 10:55 AM I was just private messaging with Kamakiri. I was looking closely at the schematic and diagram of switch SW501. I then realized that none of the 4 outer lugs "A," "B," "C," or "D" should be directly connected to each other. Well, I vividly recall that there is a jumper wire connecting two of these lugs together on my switch with messy solder joints. I think this explains it!
So either one portion of my switch is not functioning and someone tried to fix it this way, OR the jumper was put there during partial restoration efforts before I got the set. Not sure which two lugs are jumper-ed, but I bet based on the symptoms in my video and this incorrect jumper wire, this accounts for what is going on.

Edit - That M505 jewel pilot light should be on whenever the TV or radio is turned on, as it's connected to pin 2 of the 6V6 audio amp filament. It's probably on constantly because of that same jumper wire.

On the old switch there is a 270K resistor going from pin "A" to pin "D." The only resistor of that value in the area is R501. See the attached close up photo of the schematic. From the look of the schematic, I think that resistor should come off of pin "A" and go directly to chassis ground. Do not see how it would connect to pin "D?" Pin "D" does have a separate wire going to ground. So does the resistor off pin "A" get to chassis ground through pin "D," and because of the dual functionality of the switch this is not an issue?
So I guess my question boils down to, is the resistor off pin "A" okay getting to chassis ground off of pin "D?" Or should that resistor go to chassis ground separately and not connected to pin "D?"

Electrically it should not make any difference. Any point connected directly to ground is electrically speaking as good as ground to ground to...And just to type it again GROUND.:D
The only difference between as wired and how you think it ought to be is lead dress and aesthetics.
