Picked this vcr up recently for $10 working fine then one day, i turned it on and the display was blinking on and off. Turned it on again and display was steady on until i put a tape in and then the display started blinking on and off again lije there was a power drain and the pic was black and white with shadowy bars left to right across screen. Turned it on today running E.T. movie for the last 4 hours and display hasn't blinked but the screen is color with mostly pink bars running across screen coming from bottom and going up to the top. can be seen in pics somewhat. Is this possible cap failure somewhere?

Check your caps in the power supply that would be a good place to start...

Yep exactly. Bad caps in the SMPS. Use Low ESR caps when you replace them.

Good deal. i'll check them out and find replacements. I'm wonderinf if Radio Shack will have them. Bought some caps a couple years ago from them.

Radio Shack capacitors would be a short-term fix at best, if they even have the right values. I would go for 105-degree-rated Panasonic or Nichicon parts, available from Mouser, Digi-Key, and others. The short wait and shipping charges will be worth it, and prices will be far LOWER than at RS.

:banana::thmbsp:I agree with Chris; buying components like resistors, caps, transistors from Radio Shack in any quanity is like thowing money out the car window @ 60MPH (IMHO). I avoid them in almost all cases. Having shopped Mouser, Digi-Key, Allied, Newark for electrolytics, Mouser by far has the best selection and very low cost & great shipping. My last order had a problem in that I ordered the wrong part (Molex connector) and they sent me the correct one(s) No Charge and No Shipping; and this was my fault!! IMHO you can't beat that for great customer service. A couple of other times their specs were wrong in the database and the part(s) weren't quite right; again they corrected this no charge and said just keep the incorrect ones. :banana::thmbsp::thmbsp:

Avoid the cheap %$#$% branded Chinese caps unless you love doing re-re-capping every few years. Stick with Nichicon, Rubycon, Panasonic, Illinois Capacitor, etc 105-125 deg low ESR types.

Good to know. Over the years, I've grown to hate RS as anytime i went there for something and asked them about it , all i'd get is a blank stare followed by "what?". I'll just order them.

Dug into it today and found what looks to be a leaky cap. its the big one on the left next to another one of similar size. 330uf 18v. i checked and i don't have anything like that around. Tried to get pics on her but just not working right now.

I had this same exact VCR that I was using for my LCD Projector in my basement, it even had the same exact issue, and I had bought some new capacitors for it (I believe I had gotten some panasonic caps from mouser) and I was able to fix it for about a month or so and then it went back to doing the same issue as your VCR was doing yet again and so instead of just buying more capacitors for it I just ended up junking it because I didn't want to throw anymore money into it than it was worth (I bought it at goodwill for $10 and I had already sunk $10 into it when I got the first round of capacitors for it, and I didn't want to have to sink another $10 into it). And yes the capacitors you get at Digikey and Mouser and what not are dirt cheap, but the shipping kills your bargain priced capacitors because you may be only paying 25 cents for the capacitors themselves but then when you factor in the shipping you end up paying more like $10-$30 depending on the shipping method, so sometimes if you're working with a tight budget going with Digikey or Mouser isn't always the best way to go.
