Most scrap yards are HAPPY to get rid of transformers as it is a pain to burn the insulation to strip the copper from the core. Almost all switchboard transformers have a KVA rating on the voltage plate. A 440 / 220 primary hooked 220 with a 120 / 220 secondary hooked 220. Operate at 120 / 120. You will be limited to 1/2 the KVA rating for current on 120 because of wire size. Heavy, but cheap. Even if the receptacle you're using isn't grounded, it will still give a degree of protection. Besides a GFI, I still use an isolation transformer, for testing and some servicing. :yes: |
