Today, a friend gave me their old Sears (Sanyo) 25" color console TV from 1985. He said it worked; but, the color would sometimes go out and the volume would sometimes go up on it's own (both faults probably due to dirty controls).

Last Saturday, I got an email from a friend of a friend who wanted an empty TV cabinet to make a dog bed. Generally, I'm against this sort of thing; but, the cabinet on this set is not in great shape (one of the plastic side pieces have already fallen off, it's too new for me, and I don't have the space to keep it for months in hopes that someone might give me $10 for it.

I fired it up and it had a nice picture; but, I can't keep everything. So, I pulled the chassis and CRT for future use and the lady is supposed to pick up the cabinet in a couple of days. I guess it's better that this set got parted out for a dog bed, instead of her finding and ruining a vintage set.

As long as they don't see it and say 'Aww but I wanted something from the 50's' or this inspires others to do the same, then mission accomplished.

A friends in-laws had one of them. Sears had been
out for audio abt 10 times & never fixed it. Dirty IC
socket on tuning board, micro IIRC. That made me
a hero & got a 30pk of bud for 5 mn of work :banana::banana:
Those Sears / Sanyos from the 80's were damn good sets
unlike the tube jobs. Sorry to see it go but the dog
needs a warm bed.

Had this one had a decent cabinet, I might have had second thoughts about letting her have it. Of course, in the past, I've sold consoles for good money that had much worse looking cabinets.

At least the dog gets a particle board bed in rough shape. I consider the LED channel readout a plus as I have only one set so equipped, but the cabinet is too ornate for my liking.

The early American cabinet styles were hard sellers, unless the buyer's home was furnished as such. That includes console stereos as well.
Some of those extreme cabinet styles were downright hideous. The ones that Magnavox and Curtis Mathes were famous for. :thumbsdn:

I had that set's smaller brother, in the 19" version, which I purchased new in early 1982. My first remote control set, and it had VIR circuitry, a COMB filter, ambient light brightness control, and an audio output jack -- all high end features uncommon on 19" portable TV's at the time. It got one of the best pictures I've ever seen on a CRT TV, and I regret getting rid of it some 20 years later. I paid $500 for it, and as I recall, it was on sale, the list price was over $600 at the time. Loved the woodgrain metal cabinet. Back then, virtually everything in my house was purchased from the Sears catalog.
