Well, I saw this one on ebay and put in a pretty low bid, and I got it. Just over $32 + shipping. Everyone here seems to have mostly good things to say about Setchell-Carlson sets, so I figured it was worth it. I really like the look of it.

It's without the power cord and the seller tested it with another cord. I posted the seller's pictures. I'll post some more when I get it.

Any advice on the trouble with the picture? I know a recap is in order, but is there something else I should look for?

There's a good possibility that a recap alone will fix that. Distortion of the vertical deflection like you see here can be a typical symptom of leaky caps in the vertical circuitry.

Nice set. Hope the seller packs it well. Looks like the typical leaky filter cans causing the wavy picture and loss of vertical height. Should be easy to get going.

I was watching that...but I had cold feet with recent discussions of shipping. Decided to watch it to the end and hope someone HERE got it. It was conspicuously quiet for several days.

I want to get my first tube set at some point...but I just wasn't sure this was going to be it. I'm trying to stay with my "micro and quirky" with my tube set when I find it....like maybe one of those real small RCA sets, Portacolor...or a small Motorola style set.

I love it when a set I'm watching and chicken out on....ends up "in the family" here on VK. I now get to see it running anyway :)

Well, now the seller is giving me some grief over not being able to insure it through Auctivia because they don't insure tv's and wants to cancel the deal. I'm pretty persistant, so stay tuned.

The damage issued concerned me too, but it's a metal case and not bakelite. So the most likely damage will be to the CRT. Not that I want to try to replace it, but it probably can be replaced. (Of course with my luck someone will now tell me that's the rarest CRT ever made and only two are known to exist LOL)

I have to tell you that those sets have the flimsiest cabinets around, very thin Aluminum all around.

I've had two shipped to me without major incident but the last one arrived with the bottom banged in where it had been dropped on the feet, It was easy enough to take it apart and knock it back out but when you have all the guts removed it's just a thin aluminum shell with no strength at all. Also the safety screen is real glass.

What I would do is ask the seller to drop the set off at a UPS Store and have them pack and ship it, at least that way you can call the store and explain to them in detail how you want it packed and pay them over the phone by credit card. It will cost more but it's better than getting a busted set which will almost certainly be the result if this reluctant seller packs it.

I think we got it worked out and I got several assurances and a description of how it's packed, so I think it has a good chance. Fingers crossed....

Good! Look forward to seeing it. Looks to only have some vertical issue really. A full recap will likely have her running without much other fuss.

This set being in Nevada wouldn't have been TOO far for me to consider a roadtrip to get it if I had to from San Diego. Tube sets for some reason just don't ever come up on the left coast. I would think L.A. would be crawling with old sets to be had, and that is only two-three hours away.

I have used the UPS store route before. I used it with a seller who said local pick up only, so I worked it out with their local UPS store and had the seller drop it off there.

However, as was mentioned in another thread, I have found the US Post Office has been much better the last few years as to the way they handle stuff. I know from tracking packages that with the PO it goes through less sort facilities, and that is where most of the damage occurs. Also, I ship to my PO Box, so I pick up at the post office and it's not riding around in a truck all day.

At work we get daily UPS and Fedex shipments, so I have gotten to know something about how they operate. A little secret about them is that they have to deliver all next day stuff in the morning and regular parcels in the afternoon or evening. But, on a typical day their trucks are loaded only once early in the morning. Even if they have a package for you when they deliver a next day letter in the morning, they cannot give you the package until they have delivered all next day stuff. So, your box bounces around all day in their truck waiting for them to come back a second time.

On busy days, the local drivers are loaded twice. Another truck will come out to meet them after they have delivered next day stuff. Sometimes they use our truck lot to transfer packages and I watch them throw off stuff from one truck into the next. Not pretty. Also, the drivers back their truck up to our door to deliver and I watch the drivers push stuff around in their truck to get our boxes out. Also not pretty.

I'd want at least 4 inches thick of large bubble wrap on all sides of the set inside a heavy duty box. Basically the set needs to be able to bounce inside the box when dropped from 10 feet. That safety glass is also convexed, so you can't simply replace it with a flat plate if it breaks. Fun little sets.

Wonder if going inside and maybe some padding AROUND the CRT would do anything to lessen any chance of it bouncing out of any brackets. Like some heavy fluffy stuff between the chassis and the yoke?

The nature of my collection makes me unfamiliar with "big and heavy" sets...and transporting them. All my sets could be just arranged in the floor and back seat of any car....and be relatively safe as long as I didn't do some idiot thing moving them across town. I would try and carry any big set like this "face down" since I don't really know any better.

I got it yesterday and it made it intact and undamaged. The seller packed it really well. Phewww, that's a relief. This thing is heavy for its size!

I'll recap it and clean it up a little. Its going on the back burner too, so it might take a couple of weeks.

my front burner stuff takes a lot longer than that...........lol

I pulled the chassis this morning and there are several Micamold Tropicaps in there. They appear to be plastic molded on the outside. Are these an early film cap and should they be replaced the same as the paper ones?
