Checking in on the live auction http://www.liveauctioneers.com/, it seems that there must be relatively few TV collectors attending the Buk auction today. Either that or TV values are down more than I had realized.

Either that or TV values are down more than I had realized. bandersen 04-25-2013, 10:23 AM A lot of two Dumont Doghouses went for only $125! decojoe67 04-25-2013, 10:26 AM A lot of two Dumont Doghouses went for only $125! That is unreal. Even decades ago you couldn't find that deal. I was so sure the final bids on all those great TV's at that auction be would astronmical! You never can be too sure. bandersen 04-25-2013, 10:28 AM Let's see what the pre-war GE HM171 brings later today. bmcgarth13 04-25-2013, 10:46 AM where do you guys see the ending prices? am I missing something. bandersen 04-25-2013, 10:57 AM I've been jotting them down while watch the live auctions. I'll post the results later. vts1134 04-25-2013, 11:17 AM Don't forget that there is an almost 30% buyer premium on top of hammer price. zenithfan1 04-25-2013, 11:22 AM I wonder what the CT-100 will end at? If it didn't end already. bandersen 04-25-2013, 11:32 AM It's up tomorrow. This auction lasts four days. decojoe67 04-25-2013, 12:16 PM The GE pre-war is the one that has me the most curious. I can't remember the last time I saw one of these pre-war television "attachments" come up for sale. It needs a lot of TLC including all the original knobs and CRT mask, but it can be forgiven on this rare historical set. Years ago I would expect it to be in the 10K area. Anyone who gets it under 5K is stealing it. tubesrule 04-25-2013, 12:31 PM The HM171 sets actually do come up for sale occasionally. This one is also missing the CRT shield, and it looks like the chassis has been hacked to add a HV transformer on the left side. Dave S 04-25-2013, 12:37 PM Cast iron seal presses (?) on the other hand, http://bit.ly/12nXQuw appear to be far more valuable the our precious TVs. Who knew? Dave S 04-25-2013, 12:39 PM Heck, the pre-sale estimate on the CT-100 starts at only a thousand dollars. If it goes for a half or two thirds of that as some of this stuff has done, I'LL buy it! Those 621s seemed like they might have been a bargain. Lot number 288 (INCLUDING THE ICONOSCOPE!) sold for a hundred dollars! bandersen 04-25-2013, 12:41 PM HM171 went for $5,000. vts1134 04-25-2013, 12:51 PM HM171 went for $5,000. $6,335 after buyers premium. It went to some one present at the auction so they saved 3% over an internet bid. Well over my bid :smoke:. bandersen 04-25-2013, 01:00 PM GE 803 - $200 Pilot TV-37 - $200 RCA 621TS - $475 RCA 621TS - $425 Predicta Pedestal - $300 Predicta Blonde Tandem - $350 Zenith porthole tabletop - $125 Hallicrafters T-54 - $25 Crosley bakelite - $150 Sentinel 7" portable X3 - $250 Dumont doghouse X2 - $125 Emerson 628 - $175 Admiral 20X122, 22X12, 19A12 - $100 GE HM171 - $5,000 Philco Safari - $150 Fisher TV28 - $275 Motorola 7VT2, VT71 X2 - $50 Firestone 13G4, Garrod - $250 Predicta blonde Holiday, red Princess - $150 Andrea - $550 azbigsam 04-25-2013, 01:17 PM Bob, did you get the 3 motorolas? bandersen 04-25-2013, 01:22 PM Yeah, I was the big spender today ;) I figure they're good for parts if nothing else. Also easy for my buddy to pick up and transport. kwalsh2328 04-25-2013, 01:26 PM This was my first time watching a live auction. It was interesting and the selling prices seemed low (in most cases). I was wondering why many lots today included two or three TV sets -- given the added cost of the Buyer Premium, sales tax, packing/shipping costs for one or two sets in the lot that a bidder is not interested in. bandersen 04-25-2013, 01:27 PM Made no sense to me either. Especially pairing up two Dumont doghouses :dunno: decojoe67 04-25-2013, 01:42 PM GE 803 - $200 Pilot TV-37 - $20 RCA 621TS - $475 RCA 621TS - $425 Predicta Pedestal - $300 Predicta Blonde Tandem - $350 Zenith porthole tabletop - $125 Hallicrafters T-54 - $25 Crosley bakelite - $150 Sentinel 7" portable X3 - $250 Dumont doghouse X2 - $125 Emerson 628 - $175 Admiral 20X122, 22X12, 19A12 - $100 GE HM171 - $5,000 Philco Safari - $150 Fisher TV28 - $275 Motorola 7VT2, VT71 X2 - $50 Firestone 13G4, Garrod - $250 Predicta blonde Holiday, red Princess - $150 Andrea - $550 Thanks for the list Bob! It looks like I'm seeing prices from when I first seriously started collecting in the early '90's! The Pilot for $20 was a give-away. It needed TLC, but even if just the CRT was good! The Andrea TV was well worth the price. That set is very rare. The GE 803 is another rarity. Well worth the price even though it needed a complete refinish. The GE HM-171 was pricey, but you'll never get a chance at another classic pre-war TV at that price! An awesome piece of TV history even just as-is. What about the Dumont "Clifton" console? That is very rare set too. bandersen 04-25-2013, 01:48 PM Oops - I missed a zero. The Pilot went for $200. There are still three days left in the auction with lot of sets yet to come. Many in lots of 2 or 3. kwalsh2328 04-25-2013, 03:51 PM Yes, some interesting lots tomorrow - including #1089 with the Viewtone and RCA 621 paired in one lot. Phil Nelson 04-25-2013, 05:10 PM Not to mention both Cliftons and a CT-100. A Clifton is on my all-time crave list, but shipping across the USA seems dumb, and I don't like buying anything based on a couple of photos. Phil Nelson kwalsh2328 04-25-2013, 06:19 PM I've never seen a DuMont Clifton for sale (anywhere). They look like they must weigh 250 pounds. It's as rare as a pre-war and looks a lot like one. It's a set that would look very impressive in any collection! bandersen 04-26-2013, 12:11 PM Ugh. So many microscopes on auction today  Did anyone catch what the Gray sequential monitor went for ? How did Elli Buk amass so much stuff, where did he keep it, and how did he know what he had? He and Andy Warhol must have cornered the market (in their different fields) on collectibles. Steve McVoy 04-26-2013, 04:43 PM I visited Elli years ago at his place in Lower Manhattan, where much of his TV stuff was stored. The sets were stacked floor to ceiling, with aisles about 2 feet wide. The one in identified cabinet $900 and other in factory cabinet $450 with the Sparton mirror in lid. bandersen 04-26-2013, 05:37 PM That Viewtone for $900 came with a nice looking RCA 621TS :) rld-tv01 04-26-2013, 05:48 PM I can remember a Viewtone going for $4k on eBayin the last couple of years. I see all this stuff and it doesn't make me feel bad when I trip over a few things at home. The way I see it, the world needs some hoarders to warehouse the past. Warehousing is expensive and time consuming, but just imagine how much is lost to wars, natural disaster, and the disposable society. The disposable society is not just a thing of the present. Did anyone happen to catch what the Rochester's sold for? earlyfilm 04-26-2013, 06:54 PM Did anyone catch what the Gray sequential monitor went for ? $3,000 hammer price. Well, I'll be! James Tim 04-26-2013, 07:59 PM Here is a Buk anecdote about his beliefs on preserving technical history. Years ago Elli posted somewhere (I think on the old ETF classified page) that he was looking to communicate with any Dumont Clifton owners. I wrote to him that I had one that I found on the curb about 20 years ago but unfortunately it was missing the power supply. We traded several e-mails. He thought the Clifton was the merging of an important historical cabinet design and a technical milestone. He wrote at the time that he had 3 Cliftons in his collection. I wrote that someday I would restore mine and he responded emphatically that historical artifacts should be left in their original state with all original parts intact and wanted to know if I wanted to sell mine so he could save it. I responded that since he was not going to restore his would he consider selling me a power supply so I could restore mine. That was the last I heard from him :) (Still looking for a power supply) Stromberg48 04-26-2013, 08:03 PM Here is a Buk anecdote about his beliefs on preserving technical history. Ampico-kid 04-26-2013, 11:05 PM I got the Clifton auctioned first. Your Clifton only has 5 small knobs in the center versus the six knobs on the other two. I wonder what the difference is? The Clifton with 5 knobs is the earlier version that has no external focus control. The focus control on the 5 knob version is accessed behind the removable wooden panel just below the knobs. The 6th knob on the later version is a focus control. Phil Nelson 04-26-2013, 11:43 PM I did indeed - the second one bundled with a National and EmersonWhat fun! Let's hope they are all delivered safely. A Clifton is one set I would be tempted to give the Special Treatment (stuffing the paper caps, for instance). Phil Nelson Dave S 04-26-2013, 11:48 PM Only $900 for the CT-100. After seeing how things went yesterday, I figured 'hey, ya never know' and went in with what I figured was a ridiculously low bid of $850, (I figured I'd be able to sell off some of my drek to raise that much.) Fortunately (?) I got outbid. Ampico-kid 04-27-2013, 11:15 AM A Clifton is one set I would be tempted to give the Special Treatment (stuffing the paper caps, for instance). Bob Phil Nelson 04-27-2013, 11:58 AM What a pitiful bunch. You're right, not much to work with. If a person really couldn't stand the sight of modern caps under that chassis, I guess you could make replica tubes -- new labels created in Photoshop, etc. Lots of work, but for most folks restoring a Clifton would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so why rush? I'm not saying it has to be done that way, just indulging in some vicarious "what if" thinking. I'll likely never lay hands on one of those, so speculating & daydreaming is about all I'm left with :) Phil Nelson rld-tv01 04-27-2013, 01:48 PM For the purest historians etc you should photograph the capacitors before removing, then bag and label them with location removed from he set etc, and keep them with documentation for the set. Eric H 04-27-2013, 06:13 PM Does anyone know what either of the Videodynes went for? I firmly believe if I didn't get that Dumont Clifton yesterday I never would have had one of them either. There are still a lot of late 1940s sets to go around but the rare ones will get harder to find. Were there big differences among them, or was this just auction randomness? Phil Nelson rld-tv01 04-27-2013, 11:32 PM I think there were three people who really wanted and willing to pay for a Clifton. I was thinking the first one would go for about $1500. I got the first one but didn't bid on the 2nd one. The 2nd Clifton also went high so there must have been a 3rd person willing to go after it. I don't think there was any competetion by the time the 3rd one came around. I bet the buyer of that Clifton wouldn't sell it for under $1500 if he would sell it at all? Also the auction seemed quiet before lunch on the 3rd day. Maybe everyone came in late? bandersen 04-27-2013, 11:43 PM I was a little wary of the third because there's no picture of the insides. Good luck with it though! It's a must have for any serious TV collector. bandersen 05-04-2013, 07:55 PM Thanks! It's not a "doghouse" though - it's a Clifton ;) decojoe67 05-04-2013, 08:05 PM Thanks! It's not a "doghouse" though - it's a Clifton ;) Oh wow!! I didn't realize you got a Clifton! Your lucky! To me, that is the most pre-war looking post-war set made. I can't wait to see pics and vids of it. I don't know much about them, but I'm assuming it's a similar chassis to the "doghouse". bandersen 05-04-2013, 08:14 PM It's quite different than the RA-103 chassis in the doghouse. No less than three 807s in it. Two driving the horizontal yoke and a third driving the HV coil. You can cure this with a 0.5uf paper cap across the H-AFC filter to ground or maybe place a 15K resistor in series with it. Then retune the H frequency coil and your VHS tapes will bend no more! decojoe67 05-07-2013, 08:46 AM You can cure this with a 0.5uf paper cap across the H-AFC filter to ground or maybe place a 15K resistor in series with it. Phil Nelson 05-08-2013, 11:35 AM The third Dumont was complete but needed to be refinished. For that price lots of room to play. The same guy bought both ge preware sets. It's hard to guess auction results in advance, and it's hard to play "what if" after the auction is over. "That guy," whoever he was, had ample financing and wasn't shy about paying for what he wanted. The two prewar GE sets sold for a combined total of $19,000. The third Clifton went for $250, but if you or I had joined the bidding, it might have taken much more to convince him to drop out. Did anyone happen to record the final prices for TVs? You can see all of the Buk auction results here, but you have to page through everything to find the TVs: http://www.groganco.com/asp/searchresults.asp?sale_no=137++++&pg=1&ps=50&st=D&archive1=View Phil Nelson Phil's Old Radios http://antiqueradio.org/index.html rld-tv01 05-09-2013, 12:09 PM There were a couple that buyers dropped out so they sold at pick up by others for lesser price such as the 1947 Andrea lot 280. The two Viewtones were an absolute steal also. John Folsom 05-09-2013, 04:08 PM I got the Manchu, and I thought it was a steal! But alas, sometime during its life, a rectangular CRT was subed in. Now I will spend the rest of my life hunting for a 20BP4. Bummer! But it is still a really cool set, and the price was right. :-) bandersen 05-09-2013, 04:10 PM Just out of curiosity, what does a Manchu weigh ? They look massive! Phil Nelson 05-09-2013, 04:16 PM The Manchu was a bargain even without a good CRT. There is nothing quite like that set. You can see one in the corner of the big dinner party scene in A Place in the Sun with Liz Taylor and Montgomery Clift. Is there a 19" tube that you could use as a temporary sub with a new mask, while you search for the unobtanium 20BP4? Phil Nelson John Marinello 05-09-2013, 05:48 PM I know he has a 19DP4, 66-degree tube though... John Folsom 05-09-2013, 07:17 PM I don't know how much the Manchu weighs.... but is is going to be a lot. Chuck Azzaline has one, and could probably answer that. I have not yet taken delivery of the set. I am thinking that if the rectangular CRT currently installed is well done, then I would prebably leave it that way. Using a 19" round CRT is no more right or wrong. But I will be on the hunt for a 20BP4! I am very much looking forward to restoring this set. I love DuMont sets. Phil Nelson 05-09-2013, 09:02 PM Chuck's page says "about 350 pounds." http://www.myvintagetv.com/dumont_manchu.htm Here's the movie scene that I mentioned: http://www.videokarma.org/showthread.php?t=250683 Phil Nelson Tom Albrecht 05-09-2013, 11:09 PM Hi John Folsom, That makes two of us looking for a 20BP4! I have a dud 20BP4, but can't quite bring myself to spend $1000+ to send it to RACS for a rebuild, and I suspect that possibility won't be there much longer. On the other hand, I suspect eventually a set with a 20BP4 will turn up, and for not that much money. Too bad this one turned out not to have a 20BP4. I subbed a 19DP4 (purchased from John Marinello 5 years ago or so, if I remember correctly) into my Westminster, which is a reasonable sub. It doesn't really fill the corners of the 20BP4 mask, however, so I've often thought that a rectangular tube sub might in fact be a better match. A 21 inch rectangular tube might just fill the mask nicely. Next problem is that the original deflection yoke won't produce a big enough raster to fill the screen of the 66 degree 19DP4. I'm going to return to that problem again one of these days to see if lowering the high voltage may do the trick. May need to sub the yoke as well, so that will be a bit of a project in itself. In the mean time I'm OK with a slightly too small raster. Good luck with your search for a 20BP4. Hope you find two of them! :) John Folsom 05-10-2013, 09:04 AM Hi Tom Yeah, I thought of you almost immediately upon learning the Manchu needed a 20BP4. Good luck to both of us! If I had your dud, I would probably have sent it to RACS... cost be damned! :-) tvdude1 05-10-2013, 06:22 PM Hi John looking at your set now it has a 20cp4 and looks like a real nice installation. Its at my shop and gets a lot of lookers from my customers. They ask all kind of questions. Henry John Folsom 05-10-2013, 06:58 PM Henry, you are da man! Thanks so much for picking it up for me. I gotta talk to Chuck about getting it and the Gray picked up. If I ever find a good 20BP4, I would consider converting it back to its original configuration. But I don't think putting a 19" CRT in place of the 20CP4 is really any better, so will likely leave it as is. Of course, I would restore it electrically. Cause thats what I do. :-) Thanks again Henry tvdude1 05-11-2013, 07:09 AM I will check the 20cp4 Monday when I go back to work for you.
