I found one of these outside dumped in a field! The phono and radio still work very well but the CRT was broken. The TV likely would have worked if the CRT were still intact. The Allegro sound system tuner in these is good at picking up weak radio stations.

My Mom has a console stereo (no tv) about this same age. Its gotta go. Maybe if I mounted an old tv in it one of you guys would come haul it away :scratch2:

Chad, I wish the newer stereos were as good. I have an Aiwa 200-watt bookshelf system with a digital tuner that doesn't work well at all here in my small town, 35 miles east of Cleveland--at least not without an external antenna. I have to use a Terk "tower" antenna with it (without the amplifier, which just amplifies noise on already weak signals) to get most Cleveland stations in stereo. I don't care that much about the AM tuner (there isn't that much worth listening to on AM these days anyhow), but I do wish Aiwa would have paid a lot more attention to the FM tuners in these systems. If I still lived in the suburbs (and had an analog Zenith Allegro stereo system, which in fact I did for seventeen years), I probably wouldn't have noticed the drop in sensitivity, but where I live now, in east-central Lake County, is right at the far edge of the coverage areas of most Cleveland FMs. Not really a fringe area, but close enough to it to show up sensitivity differences in tuners.

I saw that unit. Nice looking cabinet; from the description, much of the electronics are in good shape as well.

I cringed when I read the line in the item description that said "...unless someone wants to make a fishbowl out of it...", though. The seller obviously doesn't care about the set or its cabinet; just wants to get it the heck out of his/her house. I've seen some very nice consoles out on the curb on trash day; they probably could have been repaired easily with a new tube or two, but the owner probably figured it was too old to bother with at that point, so out it went.

You're right as to these combos having been expensive when they were new. I don't think you could have touched a set such as that Zenith (or any other three-way combo set by any manufacturer, including RCA) for under $600 in the '60s-'70s--almost like today's HD sets. Because the Zenith on ebay had an eight-track player and all, I wouldn't have been surprised if it sold new for close to a grand.

The problem w/these guys is that they DO tend to monopolise whatever room they're put into. And yeah, I think they did go for around a grand-or more-for some of the ones that had all the "bells 'n' whistles" on 'em. -Sandy G.

If I still lived in a house, I'd bid on that set as I like Zeniths, a lot (and the set is in Pennsylvania, the next state just east of me). As it is, though, my apartment is much too small for such a monster of a TV. The closest I can come to having an entertainment center like that is the arrangement I have now: the TV and VCR in its cabinet to my far right, my computer on its desk in the middle, and the stereo to my left. The stereo speakers are on stands at either side of my desk; the computer's speakers are on top of the monitor hutch, at either side of my desk lamp.

If I could find a picture of my current installation I'd attach it to this post, but my image file is a mess right now--most of them don't have meaningful filenames, so even with a good image sorter (I have Picasa and a few other freeware image viewers) it's darn difficult to find the image I want in a hurry. Oh well....that's a project for those long, cold, snowy winter days which will be here before we know it.

BTW: Oooops! I just looked at the ebay listing for that Zenith combo, and found the bidding for it has ended. I hope whomever finally got it will enjoy it, as those 1970s Zeniths, like all their sets made before GS took over the company in the '80s, were excellent sets.
