Good score! looks like lots of wax drippage, hope the fly is good. Replacement/Rebuilt CRT. snelson903 09-14-2012, 06:36 PM im hoping to, the lady handed me a bag of extra tubes she said she found ,oh boy hope someone hasnt been trying to fix it .ill look it over tomorrow i have to rest my back after hauling that out of her basement ,narrow stair steps should be against the law. lol consoleguy67 09-14-2012, 06:52 PM Another roundie? Are you hoarding them? Sandy G 09-14-2012, 07:33 PM Me Likey ! sampson159 09-14-2012, 07:46 PM upright cabinet is very desirable to me.great score! DaveWM 09-14-2012, 07:54 PM yep the 15 clone, nice find, esp nice with a good CRT :thmbsp: DaveWM 09-14-2012, 07:59 PM if its like every other RCA and Clone, check those jumper wires that run along the top of the chroma board. I have had several that corrode and break right at the board. goes to the big power resistors in the chroma circuit. Also I would bet the .01 brown drop that is between the 6GU7 and the power resistor is weak. Not that it has to be replaced but I would replace it anyway. snelson903 09-14-2012, 08:04 PM yep me hoarding , i just cant help it ,this makes total 5, 3 zeniths, 1 magi, 1ge, now all good roundie color crt's to. they just keep poping up on craigslist around here this has got to be the last one for awhile,i cant move around down in my work area now,iv got one room just all b&w some roundie's and one predicta, thats been since spring time.my wife dont even know about the last two tv's i just tell her ,oh i had them already snelson903 09-14-2012, 08:06 PM if its like every other RCA and Clone, check those jumper wires that run along the top of the chroma board. Not that it has to be replaced but I would replace it anyway. ok ill check it. thanks snelson903 09-14-2012, 08:11 PM at this rate ill need to go to ohio, when the auction is, and maybe move some of these in the spring Electronic M 09-15-2012, 12:41 AM If nothing prevents me from attending the ETF, then you have a potential customer for one of those Zenith roundys. zenithfan1 09-15-2012, 01:13 AM That's a cool set, The GE roundies don't show up too often. I too have been guilty of the "oh, I already had that one for a while" line:D My wife rolled her eyes and shook her head.:) Charlie 09-15-2012, 03:27 AM That's an awesome set! I like that style cabinet. And as ZF1 pointed out, we don't see these in GE's often. You've picked up quite a few sets in a short period of time! You'll be running low on real estate before long! :D snelson903 09-15-2012, 04:19 AM That's a cool set, The GE roundies don't show up too often. I too have been guilty of the "oh, I already had that one for a while" line:D My wife rolled her eyes and shook her head.:) my back is still soar! me and my 25yr son squessing that tv up narrow set of steps and then making a 90degree turn at the top ,were we discovered we had to remove the basement door.fun fun fun why do i do this to myself. lol i seen that tv over two weeks ago on craigslist and have been talking to that lady ever since ,she wouldnt set a time for me to look at it . her and i think it was her son was afraid to talk to me . iv noticed that on craigslist some people are shy , other people are like earl shive's they will sell you anything for 99.95 .lol snelson903 09-15-2012, 04:27 AM That's an awesome set! I like that style cabinet. And as ZF1 pointed out, we don't see these in GE's often. You've picked up quite a few sets in a short period of time! You'll be running low on real estate before long! :D i really hope it does ,because i cant say no .and i think if i dont get it they will trash it ,like that lady in ann arbor trying to give me 5 late 50's tv's for free from that motel ,i posted them here for alittle bit i guess no-one was close to them. snelson903 09-15-2012, 04:58 AM that reminds me ,has anyone hurd from boobtubeman latley . his tv should be on his door step by wednesday if the postal service keeps there word,iv sent a few emails to him telling him i got his payment and i shipped it tues. but no reply back hope he's ok. jstout66 09-15-2012, 05:11 AM looks like the code-date on the tube is 1977, so you know it had to have been in use thru the mid 80's at least. NICE score! snelson903 09-15-2012, 07:35 AM looks like the code-date on the tube is 1977, so you know it had to have been in use thru the mid 80's at least. NICE score! I was looking at that tag ,i was not sure if it ment 77 or reverse # and it was 78 i know some date codes on other parts the numbers are printed backwards not sure if they do that in television industry though. snelson903 09-15-2012, 07:42 AM if anyone has a picture of this set i would like to see if the tuner knobs are correct for it, the uhf knob doesnt look right or a part of it is missing.im kinda getting fond of this set i like the tall model ones . dieseljeep 09-15-2012, 08:28 AM Another roundie? Are you hoarding them? Eat your heart out! We're not hoarders, we're collectors! :nono: dieseljeep 09-15-2012, 08:33 AM im hoping to, the lady handed me a bag of extra tubes she said she found ,oh boy hope someone hasnt been trying to fix it .ill look it over tomorrow i have to rest my back after hauling that out of her basement ,narrow stair steps should be against the law. lol IIRC, the new uniform building code, requires stairways to be a certain width, so the days of narrow stairways are over. hi_volt 09-15-2012, 08:43 AM Cool looking set. Good news on your CRT. I'd make some room for that one too! I just can get enough of the roundies. snelson903 09-15-2012, 10:03 AM IIRC, the new uniform building code, requires stairways to be a certain width, so the days of narrow stairways are over. now there's a building code i can agree with :D snelson903 09-15-2012, 10:08 AM Cool looking set. Good news on your CRT. I'd make some room for that one too! I just can get enough of the roundies. nope just cant get enough ,now my son want's one when im finished. Kevin Kuehn 09-15-2012, 10:51 AM That's a nice set. It'll be interesting to see how the Channel Master CRT performs. I can feel for your back pain. My son and I did the same silly thing dragging a long cabinet RCA up out of a basement. The excitement of the moment tends to mask any common sense a guy ever had. :D Sandy G 09-15-2012, 11:07 AM Part of the reason I don't have big, ginormous sets is that I'm all eat up w/Uncle Arthur Itis, & have no son to "draft" to help tote 'em...I DO have The Mighty Valdez, a 2000 Excursion, so hauling them ain't a problem, its just loading & unloading. snelson903 09-15-2012, 11:24 AM Part of the reason I don't have big, ginormous sets is that I'm all eat up w/Uncle Arthur Itis, & have no son to "draft" to help tote 'em...I DO have The Mighty Valdez, a 2000 Excursion, so hauling them ain't a problem, its just loading & unloading. i hate old arther-itis he's high jacked my spine ,but i guess pain management does help, excpt for the pill taking that drives me nuts. Sandy G 09-15-2012, 11:29 AM Good Ol' Unca Art...Yer FAVORITE relative who comes for a "Visit"...And then NEVER feckin' LEAVES....(grimace) wkand 09-21-2012, 04:41 PM I have a question and a comment: Q - What year is that GE set from? CTC15's are 1966 or 1967, right? Comment - Thw wax dripping from the fly may be indicative of not replacing Horiz out, HV Reg and HV Rect tubes at time of CRT replacemnet. I was told by an old TV guy in the '70's that it's a good idea to replace all 3 as a set with a CRT rebuild or new replacement. Q - Do others in the forum have opinions on that? Q - Would it make sense for snelson to replace them now if the fly is still good? OK that's three questions....:D marty59 09-21-2012, 06:29 PM I've came across many times when a crt had been replaced that the flyback would then bite the dust..coincidence?? I'd look at that as an extra measure of preventative maintainance from a service shop point of view. After they spent all that money on a picture tube job the last thing you would want is an angry customer! I'd make sure the sweep tubes would test good, even if they had been replaced at some point....after all part of refurbishing a set is checking the tubes anyways. The CTC-15 type sets came out around 1964 before the mandatory UHF rrequirement. Charlie 09-21-2012, 07:01 PM The CTC15 & 16 "clones" were made for several years. My 66 Curtis Mathes is a 15/16 clone, and I also have a 68 Truetone that is a 15 clone. snelson903 09-21-2012, 07:54 PM oh yes its going to get a shake down ,im even going to remove the pva material that crt is starting to get racks on the endge ,when i take it apart i dont want go back in it for a long time . im going to replace the small caps the lytics anything that might show up .when i test tubes even if there slight weak i replace them ,i have a very good supply of new and used tubes ,iv been collecting tubes of all kinds since i was a kid. thats why im still rebuilding that zenith from the barn keep finding things ,i dont want to start on nothing else till that one is complete finished. plus iv got to get things around here ready for winter and im expanding my tv work rooms[ remodeling]. wkand 09-23-2012, 11:38 PM Thanks, guys! You confirmed what I was thinking about fly issues after CRT replacement.:thmbsp: Best to you snelson! That barn find Zenith is an amazing project you've got going! I don't blame you for wanting to finish that first. ctc17 09-23-2012, 11:51 PM Its more likely the fly would fail due to a weak crt..heres why. Bad crt = low load on HV, HV regulator tube takes up the slack until it gets weak then the hv goes high and the isolation in the flyback doughnut breaks down and arcs. Almost all the CTC flyback failures I have seen were due to arcing from the top of the doughnut to the bottom. The high voltage was too high. snelson903 09-24-2012, 07:29 AM while we are on that subject i would like to find a new flyback still in the box ,or if there was any new one's that was part of any update they might of had .i have three used one's but rather have a new one, id like to watch this tv on a regular basis. DaveWM 09-24-2012, 10:22 AM keep the set in a air conditioned eviroment (low humidity), make sure the HV is properly set, both the anode voltage and the eff coil for min current. Make sure the regulation is working properly, use a variac or a bucking transformer and see how low you can go and still get normal operation. I generally use 105-110vac which seems to work fine. If you do all of the above I doubt the fly will be a problem. snelson903 09-24-2012, 10:57 AM thanks for the info ,i have noticed over the yrs esp. with older equitment if you notice at the time they were made the line voltage was around 110v to 117v today the average line voltage is 120 plus volts ,today the system is at its limits to get the amount of current / amps that is needed they keep pushing everthing higher. snelson903 04-17-2013, 06:10 PM i picked this ge up last fall ,im going to be overhauling it in a month or so, i was wondering if anyone had any pictures of sale adds or models that used this cabinet ,but a diffenent varnish colors and different moldings and tunner trim. it looks like this tv is missing something they made it so plain looking, im curious if they dressed this cabinet up any. thanks egrand 04-17-2013, 10:04 PM I couldn't find any ads with your style cabinet, but here is one with a much fancier cabinet: http://books.google.com/books?id=RVIEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA109&dq=ge%20color%20tv&pg=PA110#v=onepage&q=ge%20color%20tv&f=false I know GE was never known for having very fancy styling in their radios. By the way, does anybody know where GE made their cabinets? They did have a factory in Decatur, IL that made console stereo and record players, and I was wondering if they made tv cabinets too. While I was looking, I did find a newspaper article on the GE tv sets that had the x-ray radiation problems: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=pXBIAAAAIBAJ&sjid=pFoDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6624,4659555&dq=ge+color+tv&hl=en snelson903 04-18-2013, 02:41 AM thanks for looking egrand, i liked reading about the health warning on the radition on early color tv's .i remember when i was young my mom concerned about that when we got our first color tv in 1968. |
