View Full Version : 1966 motorola 23 inch color
timmy 08-15-2012, 07:36 AM i have this motorola color and it works fine since i got it done but it always had little red streaks of red on the edges of whites. i have not figured out why or how to get rid of it. all the other colors are fine just the white. any ideas anyone? if i post a pic it may not be seen.
ctc17 08-15-2012, 07:57 AM Does it go away when you turn the color down?
If so good chance its the crt. How are the emissions at 5 volts? If the emissions show good at 6.3volts but sharply drop off as you lower the voltage to 5 I would be looking at the crt.
Red bleed and smearing are one of the signs of a tired crt.
timmy 08-15-2012, 08:14 AM with the color down the last i tried it still was there. ill have to try the crt test at 5 volts.
ctc17 08-15-2012, 08:24 AM Color down = convergence?
Yea always test down to 5 volts. A usable crt will show good at 6.3, a strong crt with good life left will show good down to 5 or lower
timmy 08-15-2012, 08:33 AM i did have a hard time converging this set as its alittle different then the rcas and i have tried to get that red smear out when i converged it but no good. so it could still be a crt issue?
ctc17 08-15-2012, 09:00 AM Not if its doing it with the color off. Unless itts a crappy rebuild and it won't converge right.
zenithfan1 08-15-2012, 09:08 AM I agree, looks like a convergence issue.
timmy 08-15-2012, 09:21 AM :smoke:hmmmmm,
ctc17 08-15-2012, 09:41 AM :smoke:hmmmmm,
Give me the model number, I have a load of motorola factory service data and it may have better instructions on the convergence. Sams are 'quick and dirty' when it comes to detailed stuff.
timmy 08-15-2012, 09:57 AM its a 1966 908 chassis with the converge adjustments in front, i dont like this setup. the sams states to use the bar gen and then make the final adustments in the front as well as the 2 drives in the rear to get the best black and white pic.
reeferman 08-15-2012, 10:47 AM I worked on a lot of 23" Motorolas and they sets were notorious for having bad tube sockets, especially the ones along the rear of the chassis (demods I believe). Tap (all) the tubes with the handle end of a nut driver and see what happens. Hopefully nothing. Let us know.
DavGoodlin 08-15-2012, 10:51 AM I believe a Motorola Guru by the name of Forest H Belt wrote a book on servicing Motorola's. It was a Tab Books (now McGraw Hill) and no doubt out of print.
My $.02: If you turn down the contrast or brightness and the schmear goes away, the CRT may need a "kid-gloves" belt with your CRT tester.
Is this CRT a 23EGP22?
timmy 08-15-2012, 11:09 AM yes its the 23egp22 and was rebuilt in 1982. KIDS - GLOVES, ? booster ???
mstaton 08-15-2012, 11:43 AM kid gloves= gently, lightly. he means use the lowest restore setting on your CRT tester and zap it. usually the "clean" function.

hmmmmm, even if it shows good already????????????? what do you think dan?
zenithfan1 08-15-2012, 12:14 PM If it shows good with a good life test or still good when tested at 5v or less on the heater, I'd leave it alone.
mstaton 08-15-2012, 12:15 PM I agree. Retest it first before you make that decision.
ctc17 08-15-2012, 12:31 PM hmmmmm, even if it shows good already????????????? what do you think dan?
Ohh I dont think, the TV dispensing its modern culture propaganda programming trash has disabled the 'think' function in my brain.
Besides, if I say 'I think' I start to sound like a politician.
I will say Dan does not restore/rejuvenate crts anymore. The risk of making it worse is to high. Deal with it.
timmy 08-15-2012, 12:43 PM ah ok ill just check it at 5 volts and take it from there dan, thanks all.
reeferman 08-15-2012, 10:24 PM Start looking for a 25AP/XP22 to use as a replacement. We were able to squeeze a lot of them in place of the 23EGP without the need for a mounting kit. You'll need it sooner or later.
Mal Fuller 08-16-2012, 07:41 AM Good advise. I never saw a 23EGP22 that was worth a damn.
timmy 08-16-2012, 01:21 PM :sigh:................................
ctc17 08-16-2012, 02:31 PM TIMMMMMMMMY......
Turn that frown upside down! There is no shortage of ap/gp/cp/xp22s. If you have the mechanical skills you can fit it in.
timmy 08-16-2012, 02:57 PM ok i do have the skills but i am not all that fond of this set anyway but as i write this i am about to check this crt at 5 volts so ill be back shortly with the news.
timmy 08-16-2012, 03:22 PM ok testing at 5 volts the blue and green is good but the red is alittle low otherwise everything tests really good. i did check for those whisker shorts and they were there but i burned them out. i then checked it at 6 volts and everything was like new.
ctc17 08-16-2012, 03:30 PM Leave it alone and just watch it. More tvs will come your way. Before you know it you will have 50 of them.
timmy 08-16-2012, 03:48 PM well i dont know what the deal is here but i wonder if i had this set tuned wrong because i just retuned it and adjusted the color and damit the red lines or smear is gone. crazy tvs.......@#@$%$^&$#....
DavGoodlin 08-20-2012, 01:02 PM It sounds like you have the "gift". kinda like those dousers (water finders)
I have a set I'll trade ya for that. Its a 1972 Motorola Quasar TS938, 100% solid state WID REMOTE control, the CRT is a 25V... and is good. Love those 60's color Motorola sets, always looking but few sold in this area.

well i listed this motorola on the i think its called etc, early television classifieds for what i got it for and what i put in it.
ctc17 08-20-2012, 07:48 PM Seems like a waste after all the time and energy you put into that thing. You should just keep it and deal with it.
jstout66 08-20-2012, 09:40 PM I hated those tube Motorola's... by far, the WORSE set of its day.
6GH8cowboy 08-21-2012, 05:52 AM Suspect poor crimps where the wires connect to the socket pins. Ive seen this cause smear and changing grey-scale, FYI

well it does work nice and now that i realize i had the tuning messed up its all good but it was a learning period for me and besides if someone really loves motorolas then maybe this is what they should have, lol. if no one wants it then it will stay put and ill watch it from time to time like i do already, i just like the roundies better.:thmbsp:

I agree, they were a challenge. I personally saw way too many Sears Color sets of that era. IMO Sears was the worst.:thumbsdn: No Wards around here.
We could have used more Admirals and Sylvanias (and fewer GE and Sears) in the late 60s, I thought they were under-rated.
dieseljeep 08-21-2012, 09:39 AM I hated those tube Motorola's... by far, the WORSE set of its day.
You're thinking of the small chassis, TS 914 and simular. I had the big chassis. ETS 908. I ran it for ten years, until the 23EGP22 started looking rather sick.
They were a lot better than those lousy GE's of the time. :thumbsdn:
holmesuser01 08-21-2012, 05:46 PM My family had a 1966 or 67 Motorola. It had a color indicator... neon light... to let me know if the set was receiving color. It got 3 CRT's during the warranty. The picture would start out looking really good, then it'd get slowly darker and darker over time. When #3 tube began to die, we got a Magnavox, and never looked back. I ran the Motorola in my bedroom until it totally died.
sampson159 08-21-2012, 07:07 PM those motos were terrible!the picture was gawd awful.other than the crts, they were very good sets electronically.i had 2 of those in my basement back in the 70s.crts were strong but looked hideous.swapped out with a sylvania,(hard to get it to mount proper) but the picture was very good.used it as a spare before it got flooded.my dad saw those in the store when new and marveled at the chassis.he didnt care for the crt though
DavGoodlin 08-23-2012, 03:01 PM I had a TS 914 table model with 23EGP22 and color indicator. I do remember a rather "unreal" color picture though the CRT tested good. I always though there was a demod issue but I was used to 6GY6 circuits that RCA used , but the 6LE8 operation in Motorolas made no sense. I did like the way they were put together.

I've got a 67 Airline which is basically a rectangular clone of a roundy RCA chassis. The thing was WELL kept by the previous owners and all I've had to do to it is adjustments so far.....But I do need to fix that damn open mystery value vertical centering pot soon cause since the move and purity redo I can't fill the mask while keeping decent linearity.
old_coot88 08-23-2012, 08:15 PM ...but the 6LE8 operation in Motorolas made no sense.
It did reduce the parts count considerably. :D
When new those sets put out knock-your-socks-off reds and oranges that might be considered "unreal" by comparison to other brands using standard demod layouts.

The problem was that the G-Y was taken off the cathode of that single tube circuit and so the greens were not as strong as they should be by comparison to the reds and blues.

holmesuser01 08-23-2012, 09:17 PM When our Moto was new, it looked so nice... but never looked good again through the next two tubes.
I loved the feature having the convergence controls on the front of the set behind the speaker!

I don't know if National Video rebuilt the 23EG's. Most of the new and rebuilt Motorola branded CRT's were Sylvania sourced.

All I know is that all of the replacement tubes were badged with a Motorola label. This all happened a long time ago.
timmy 08-24-2012, 03:27 PM well all i know is my 23eg was rebuilt in 1980 and it checks out great and still looks great as well. even though these crts got a bad rap for being lousy, looks like i got a good one,lol...

The 23EGP22 earned its reputation the hard way, one crummy CRT at a time! I'm glad you got one that performs well.

I Agree with that one. I had a few Motorolas go thru my shop with dim dull pictures, and no bad tubes. Most of the time, the problems were either vertical problems, or no HV/Hz problems. I'd fix them, and they'd go back home... dim picture and all. If the customer didnt mention the dim picture specifically, I'd say nothing.
One customer had his set in a dark bedroom on top of a chest of drawers.
timmy 08-25-2012, 04:16 PM well my 23egp is thankfully bright otherwise i did all the recaping for nothing as well as some resistors, lol , these tvs, they are great stuff from the past but can drive a person to drink booz that dont.....
DavGoodlin 08-28-2012, 03:03 PM Fun thread. This is exactly what made TV fun for this "accidental tech" in the mid-70's.
Crazy Color is what I call Motorola's method, now that I read the post from JDPylon explaining it.
GE had a wacky method for color as well. It seemed like Zenith took "re-inventing color demodulation" to the right level.
I still want to find one of these in the worst way....R U Making any trips south Timmy?

Admiral used the same color demod circuit. So did a few other makes, including a Japanese firm.
There was another odd-ball color demod circuit, used at the end of the tube era. It used a 6MK8, or it's series string variants. Magnavox, Warwick and possibly a few others used it.

sanjarali 08-28-2012, 08:47 PM This is most beautiful ever!:banana::yes::yes:
ChrisW6ATV 08-28-2012, 10:05 PM Very nice cabinet.
holmesuser01 08-29-2012, 08:00 AM Nice set. That one is older than my Motorola was.
That cabinet reminds me of a Maggie that I had once that had an unobtainable flyback... at the time... that I junked. I kept the cabinet for about a year. It was similar to yours in cherry finish. Dark... beautiful. I still think about it today.

The set you have is simular to the one I had. That set has the more complex color circuit using seven or more tubes. Ets908. The last year for it.

Didn't Zenith call it " chromatic brain ".
The 14A9C50 used the round 9 pin IC. The 12A12C52 used the small PC board, with DIP IC on it. :scratch2:
timmy 08-29-2012, 09:06 AM this 908 chassis looks complex and is a big chassis, i am more used to the rca or rather i like working on the rca chassis.

It's called " familiarity ". After working on all the sets that were RCA clones. Motorola and Zenith never cloned RCA designs. They also never bought RCA chassis like many of the others, to include color sets in their product lines.
