View Full Version : Any luck finding small CRTs ??

I was given a set that is real cute. It's some weird name "MECOA mtv-05", almost a knockoff of the little tiny Magnavox "Shadow" sets, but she needs a CRT for sure. The little focus pin is broken off right at the glass.

The little tiny set was a "basket case" and needed almost ALL the traces around the flyback restored because of a BIG circular crack in the board. Then after the set lived again....had to trace where the audio was not making it to the audio amp. This ALSO ended up a trace with a crack in it.

Just as I thought the set was doing okay, I noticed the focus would go "in and out". The little neck board was off in the back when I first opened her up...but I didn't SEE anything wrong and just put it back. I traced the focus RIGHT up to the CRT socket....and then found the little CRT pin was broken off and stuck in the socket. This little 4.5" CRT is WAY too small to be trying to recover the little pin in the glass.

Do we have some secret place we FIND these little CRTs at besides just parts sets? I tried to Google the "EIA 1240" that I saw as a part number. Did find some obscure reference to the tube itself, but no source to find one. I'll likely run across one at some point from some other basket case 4.5" set (I could probly take one out of a Shadow if I had one I didn't wanna KEEP) :sigh:

What you have there is probably the EIA manufacturer code. I have no idea who made that TV or the CRT you are trying to fix, but, over on AK is a list of them, courtesy of another member. Lotsa luck...

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=91886

Edit: Never mind, the list is from 1958, and stops before 1100. Chances are you couldcontact the EIA and ask them, perhaps.

The sad fact in play is many collectors don't consider these collectible, and walk right past them at the thrift store. Depends on one's taste. I have to balance my junkin' junkets with an occasional piece of Corning Ware or a bath towel to keep my better half pleased. If it ain't round, it better be tubed, or it won't be comin' home with me. Again, good luck on your quest.

Interesting list.....had to dig a bit to find it.

Seems the "1240" just refers to a "Clinton" electronics. This set is obviously from somewhere around 1986 or thereabouts (just a guess). I could find no actual date. I guess after work I'll hafta look again and see if I'm missing an actual part number. If this was one of my little "cheap chinese Coby" sets....I would have three or four complete parts sets to grab a CRT from. I have no parted out of these little 4" sets.

This set was just some cute thing someone gave me, but was QUITE obviously dropped or something. Weird how dropping these tend to bust up the PC boards pretty good, but tend to leave the plastic cabinet pretty much untouched. This is like the fourth time I ran across a little set that LOOKS perfectly fine...but is all busted up inside.

I decided to go through it since it was an odd brand...and a nice tidy little set. It's almost exactly like the little Magnavox Shadow except the tuning thumbwheel is way down in the right corner. I got it to go for nothing but the time it sat under the knife on my workbench...and then I saw this focus problem.

It's no BIG deal really. The set is now perfectly running except this little pulsating between focused and not. I stuck the little pin back in the CRT socket and put the board back. I'm likely getting a buildup of focus HV...and then a small discharge to the broken pin that brings the focus back for like a second. This would be alarming on a BIG set, but is merrely annoying on a little one.

Well, there you have it. Clinton Electronics has a storied history here, do a search in VK and you will see. My previous employer (1987-2002) used to get 12-inch green-o-chromes from them. They had the old Sylvania logo on their pin separators, but they were shipped in the Taiwanese carton the envelopes came in, marked " TINTED GLASS BLUB" (not a typo on my part). They were recently bought by Video Display Corporation, and are of little use to us collectors, IMHO.

Couldn't your just take the old pin, heat up a blob of solder on the end, and hurry up and stick it to the broken piece in the CRT? It wouldn't be a great joint, but it'd be better than an arcing gap. If it makes enough contact to pop in and out of focus, it must be sticking out at least a tiny bit...

Yeah.... I'll likely just live with the little set the way it is, or one day get REAL adventurous and try and see if I can somehow get to that pin without letting all the magic out :scratch2:

I'm just not used to these little micro sets "stumping" me in any way. I'll obviously at some point make the mistake of buying some Magnavox Shadow or similar 4.5" set that will be FUBAR but have a CRT. I do that ALL the time with those little 5" chinese sets...and end up with LOTS of parts to fix like four others (I have a little sub-collection of those in different color cabinets)

I just like these little "Shadow" sets because they are almost cubes. I like that little high-deflection 4.5" tube for some odd reason. The set itself ends up MUCH shallower and looks nicer on a shelf than the big long 5" sets you see every day. I also have about four of the little Sony "paddle" CRT sets just for fun :D

Yup Coogar....

Saw that just after posting this last reply.

The "if I get real adventurous" part means getting a good magnifying glass and taking a REAL good look at the end of this little CRT. For these little sets, I'd even be okay with just jumping a WIRE across to the neck board. It's not like a little late '80's plastic mini TV set is any real restoration.

It would be a chance to do something "weird" to get a set going again.....OR.... The thing ends up in a shoebox because I took a DREMEL to the back of that little CRT trying to chip in to that pin (and then do EXACTLY your solder idea)....and cracked it.

If I can see even a LITTLE metal showing and can just solder a resistor lead to it or something with a REAL small soldering tip....it would probly work at least just to reassemble the neck board at least once. I'd worry just pulling the board off again would just break the new pin. Again....it's not like I'm ALL bent outa shape because this happened to one of my old Sony sets or anything. It's just one of those "I'm GONNA get this to work again" projects.....because the little thing was like 30 seconds from being thrown in a dumpster when I told him I wanted it

Sort of expensive, but I have used conductive epoxy with success on CRT pins:

http://www.amazon.com/MG-Chemicals-Conductive-Adhesive-Syringe/dp/B003BDMJSY/ref=pd_cp_hi_0

Auto parts stores generally stock inexpensive kits of "silver paint" for repair of window defroster and antenna connections, but I have not tried these products on CRT pins.

Probly wouldn't be a bad thing to just have in a toolbox though. Expensive if it was just for the one fix...but not really as a tool. I'll hafta go look and see if they have something like this at Fry's. It would be a decent idea if I wanna sorta lightly "build up" a couple millimeters above the break. I trust the focus voltage on a 4.5" set must be VERY low current. I do know it's high enough to bite me pretty good though (don't ask)

I gotta get me a high voltage probe someday. My finger makes a pretty good DIGITAL (hehe!) reading though :gigglemad

I'm not sure what a Magnavox Shadow Set looks like but I have some 4.5" sets made by the likes of Rhapsody, I think they might be similar.
I think I have a spare tube from one.

Can you post a picture of your set?

Like this maybe?

AiboPet

I'll post one later after work....but I can already see this is an IDENTICAL set you posted a pic of. has that same thumbwheel tuning at the extreme right and everything.

I was suspecting it was the same as the "Rhapsody" sets...but I don't own one (yet). The Shadow is pretty much the same cabinet but the tuning thumbwheel is more like a "barrel" and not a dial. I bet they are nearly identical inside if I took one of the Maggie Shadows apart.

I like these little sets. love their "cube" form factor BECAUSE of the little CRT they use. I know nothing about the CRT itself, but it has a nice flat face...and appears to be a high deflection unit to keep the depth small. They fit in "weird" places like on the toilet tank in the bathroom where a big long "Bentley" 5 inch would never fit :D

I like this one in particular because I had NEVER seen a "Mecoa" branded set.....and it was another one of those I rescued from being gone forever, and then of course I like this form factor. There is likely no real other redeeming factor. This "Mecoa" is no doubt just some rebrand of whoever ACTUALLY builds the Rhapsody sets.

I'll post a pic of THIS set (white)...one of the "unmolested" Magnavox Shadow (also white), and of the one I customized to be BRIGHT red with a redone front bezel. These bezels are nothing but real thin lexan or something. The red one came ALL banged and scratched up, so I had to make sort of a new one. You'll notice these three sets look ALL the same except the Maggies seem to have a nicer version of the same two switches...volume slider...and a "barrel" version of that tuning knob.

AiboPet
08-14-2012, 04:38 PM
Here they are....Two Magnavox Shadows, and the little MECOA set.

The red one and "creme" one are both Magnavox Shadows. The creme one is all original. The red one was sort of a complete customization because the shell was REALLY beat up when I got it.

The set I'm having the issue with...is the little white one. I have not decided to pull the backs off the MECOA and one of the Shadows...but almost CERTAIN these are almost identical sets. The MECOA is likely to be "real identical" to your Rhapsody set.

For some reason the MECOA set with the broken CRT appears to be NOT acting out for the time being.....but it's sorta obvious I have not dialed it in yet, and that focus problem will SURELY return once I've touched it again :sigh:

Those look the same as the Rhapsody sets.
Funny thing is it seems like no two are ever exactly alike, same basic set but there are lots of small differences in parts and layout.

I swapped Flybacks in one of my 5" sets, looked the same but the holes were just ever so slightly off, enough to make it a pain to do.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I have a CRT stashed away somewhere, i'll take a look tonight.

They ARE Cute L'il Guys...I sorta remember 'em-Or ones VERY similar being for sale NIB for something like $9.95, right as the curtain fell on analog sets..They had stacks 'n' stacks of 'em at checkout counters ar grocery stores, drug stores, variety stores, quickie marts 'round here.

I remember when these sets were new and I wanted to buy one but always passed because of the thin flexible screen cover which I thought would scratch easily. It seems it would have been cheaper to leave the front of the CRT exposed. I have never seen the Magnavox Shadow in person. Does it have a solid plastic front? I saw one on Ebay today and it looks like it does whereas the Rhapsody ones have the thin flexible screen cover. How is the build quality overall on the Magnavox? I may put one in my collection.

You might look at broken karaoke machines too, as a source of small BW CRTs. I work for an electronics recycler, and I am surprised to see many newer karaoke machines still being manufactured with BW CRTs...

Wow, I found it in less than 3 minutes, a record for me.

Here it is, says E2282, don't know if that's the type or what but it came out of one of those little sets, don't know he brand, possibly Rhapsody.
I have a feeling they are all pretty much the same type but who knows.

If you want to try it it's yours for the postage.

I was surprised to see it was made in Japan, the Yoke is made in Taiwan.

That is Tape you see on the face, I didn't want it to get scratched.

Off topic but here's one of my favorite little sets.
It's sort of a deep hot pink color.
I read that Radio Shack sold these, I don't know, it doesn't say RS on it and I got it from a Canadian Seller.

This set has no safety screen, just glass like any other modern set, I think that improves the appearance a lot.

These seem cheap and crappy now but can you imagine getting one of these for Christmas as a kid, say around 1970? (or whenever you were ten).

Do remember that same little pink set on ebay a couple months ago. I kept wanting to get it..and then would talk myself out of it :P

That CRT you have up there.....looks to be the same one for sure. I did try one of the Shadow's little CRTs in the MECOA, and the thing fired up without the odd pulsating focus.....so I guess these are the same or similar tube. I guess if you find out how much it would cost to send it to 92123 here in San Diego, I'd GLADLY shoot some cash over to you via PayPal or something.

The one up there who asked about the flimsy plastic front....yes. All of them sorta have that, including the Shadow. The red one in my pics came with BIG abrasions on the front and I had to fashion a whole front from some clear plastic.

LOL..... You hafta build a LITTLE tiny roundie!!

I have a small monitor I built out of a 1" viewfinder CRT like that, but it's maybe a .75" rectangle one. I wish I had REAL good woodworking skills. I'd build a REAL real small wood cabinet and make it look like an old Motorola set or something, or even a little "mirror" set. So far, it's just a little TINY ntsc b/w monitor just sorta ziptied together :P

I do have a Panasonic CT-101 up in LA at my dad's place. I gotta remember to get that little thing down here some day before it grows legs or something. It's a 1.5" color set.

And Eric...COOL!!

Would deffinately love to see a little CRT for this little set, and I'm in no hurry. I didn't really seem to ever locate any place I could just buy a couple, and I hate the idea of being "stymied" by such an obvious problem on one of my little projects. I noticed last night that the original CRT also has a different "warmer" phosphor color. I think I saw that a couple times with the little 5" Coby style sets too. Seems like the SAME crt by different manufacturers....or could even be just different batches. The Maggies have the same CRT, but are "cooler" in that their b/w picture is more on the blue side. One of the 5" sets is so weird in that way it's almost PURPLE even though it's the same CRT used in THOSE sets.

Weird though....I still can't find anything that looks like a model number on these. The two maggies have some chinese scrawl on some stickers, but the original problem CRT still just has the "EIA 1240" sticker and thats all. I did LOOK at the necks real closely before I just indiscriminately swapped 'em just to see. They appear to be exactly the same part. I even looked at the CRT on the little 4" Magnavox "TV/clock/radio" I have....and it ALSO is the same nondescript crt the two shadows have. I'd lay odds the little Emerson "boombox" with the 4" picture is likely the same as well. It's pretty hard to miss the very square and flat geometery of this part compared with other CRTs. No doubt popular because of the short throw of it's high deflection.

Until now I had never seen a CRT that small. Where would a tiny tube like that be used, anyway? :scratch2: Too small to be a television CRT. I once saw a TV (in an old issue of the defunct Popular Electronics magazine, IIRC) with a 3" tube built for a doll house, but this little button-shaped (and sized) one is a new one on me. Probably one of a kind.

BTW, in answer to the post from the person who has the pink portable TV and who said "can you imagine getting a TV like this in 1970 (or whenever you were 10)": I was ten years old in 1966. I don't think that particular TV had even been thought of until the 1970s.

My first TV was, IIRC, a 16" 1950s console Capehart set, followed, again IIRC, by a 17" 1955 Emerson metal-cased portable. The smallest b&w TV I ever had was a 12" 1969 Sharp portable that lasted only three years (tuner problems). I had several small b&w TVs after that, with the smallest color set (after my Silvertone CTC-12 clone bit the dust in the early '70s) being a 16" Sears-branded (but probably made by Toshiba) metal-cased table model, a trash find in 1975. The smallest color set I have ever seen was in an eBay posting a few weeks ago; the set was a Sony Trinitron 6" TV. I bet that set would make excellent HD pictures, with a screen that small.

The one I have is from a Viewfinder in a big old dinosaur of an RCA camcorder...a big VHS one. As I was about to TOSS the thing because of a power supply issue....I saw the little viewfinder and carefully dissected it. Turns out the small board next to it and the CRT itself could be made into a little b/w monitor just by carefully excising and rigging up some custom 9Vdc wires and an RCA jack. I've kept it around just for giggles...and always think I'm gonna build something silly with it.

If I coulda figured out a VERY small tuner of some sort....I woulda built a "pack of smokes" TV or some silliness. I could probly at THIS point put it in a REAL small cigar box with an RCA jack at one end and a 9 volt battery. Maybe hack it into one of the small plastic drawers of the workbench organizer :P

It makes a VERY useless....incredibly CLEAR little tiny picture...with NO sound

I'm thinking that the tiny Panasonic sets (about 1.3 inch , diagonal screen) were about the smallest TVs sold to the public.

Yup....I have a TR-1010 (the one you pictured), a TR-1030 (same picture...even SMALLER set), and the little CT-101 (a COLOR version...same size picture...a little bigger set)

That CRT pictured next to the 1010 is not the same tube in that set. It's a very square flat face, and has a more traditional neck with a regular yoke on it. I've had to get into the 1010 a few times for vertical issues before....and it's a NASTY set to work on.

I think I even have a 1010 in a "basket" somewhere from many years ago that I killed trying to fix it. I've been into my current one like three times in three or four years. Mostly just cold solder joints and once to mess with the "ribbon" cable that joins the top and bottom PC boards.

I used to actually CARRY the oldest 1010 as was intended...but that made it REAL unreliable as it gets tossed around. The 1030 showed up pristine in it's own box....so I keep it safe on a shelf and don't mess with it. I do have it come on with the little X10 power controller that turns on that whole bookcase of small sets though.

Thanks for the link to the other thread...NICE read from long before I got here (which was only a few months ago). ALWAYS nice to see others collecting micros. then I don't feel QUITE as weird. I have friends that ask not only "why all the little TV sets"...but also "What's wrong with the little modern LCD sets?". They just don't get it do they?

For sure, the tube shown next to Panasonic is an electrostatic deflection CRT (note the fat neck) from a Sinclair TV (try to find one of those that works !) for size comparison.

I used the one pictured as a "rooftopper" for several years, and it once slid down a roof and landed on a sidewalk below. I picked the parts (scattered over about a 5 foot area) and stuck it back together, but it is still pretty "rough" looking. :(

I have a near mint 1030P from1983.

"They just don't get it..." Boy, ain't THAT th' Truth.... As Ernie over at AK observed once, "For those who Understand, no explanation is necessary...For those who DON'T, no explanation will suffice..." I got a 1EP2 NOS CRT from Fair Radio once...It was a cylindrical style tube, w/a roughly nickel/quarter sized face, which apparently was ground flat...I gave it away to somebody at AK years ago, I THINK he was gonna make a CRT clock outta it or somesuch. I tried to get another one from Fair, but they were gone. I THINK Richardson made it, & it had umpteen tiny little pins sticking out of the back...

Yup Jr_tech....

I had posted that about the tube being "wrong" before looking at that GREAT thread...so I thought it was supposed to be the tube that was inside the 1010. After actually SEEING the thread though, a REAL nice collection of the little Sony paddle crt. I didn't even know there were two different flat Sony crt at the time. I have the little 10A and more recently a bright PINK little FD-42A. I thought the pink was so unusual...because I could see NO reference to a pink 42A with Google. I have seen the weird geometry these sets have when you put a crosshatch on them, but they seem to be perfectly watchable for the casual viewer. I have another one that I think is an "FD 2A". All of these are of the curved paddle type...so was NOT aware of the rather unusual electrostatic crt.

I use the little FD-10A almost daily in the front room just to see that my inhouse transmitter IS up and running. It just sits on the coffeetable.

I once wigged out one of my friends who picked it up and laughed at why I had such a stupid thing next to all my remotes. I just turned it on casually and said "Of COURSE it works.....looks like Lost in Space is on". He had no idea of the inhouse media player and had him thinking some REAL old station was on the air...and playing OLD stuff...complete with commercials for the Chevrolet Corvair and VW Beatle :P

I have that little pink Sharp 3" color set in my watched list on ebay......but $200 between BIN and shipping is deffinately too rich for me for now.

There is a little pink Magnavox Shadow I'm gonna try and add to my little collection of the two other shadows, but it has gathered a bidder since I started this thread.

Love that pic of the three 42A sets. That is deffinately the little pink one I found about a month ago. Runs REALLY good, but have to admit to thinking there was a geometry problem with it and at least took the back off to clean it up. Turns out this was about the time I really became aware of the so-so linearity of these. I got it dialed in pretty good, but I guess there is only so much you can do with such an odd crt angle. You had a pic in the other thread of a crosshatch on one of these....and it pretty much matched what I have on both the 10A and 42A.

An XL-100 would actually be a GIGANTIC set in "my" collection. Biggest thing I have is the little 12" GE I got at the swap meet a few weeks ago. It's not even really in the display shelves because it would DWARF all the little micros. It lives in the kitchen, on a counter being a daily driver. Even the Sony S8-301 was a bit big for the display shelves...so it has it's own place in the front room. It's a bit fussy, so it only sees action if I wanna sit there and babysit it while watching it.

LOL @ the pic of an abysinian watching a little red 10A. My cats would just casually look at the sets...but I think the horizontal output squeel bugged 'em. They would usually run off if you actually set the TV in front of 'em. You can see in my avatar that the Sony AIBO robots LOVE to watch TV....but sadly, it's just the frame flicker that just draws their attention. I can keep that robot equally entertained by turning on a ceiling fan :P

I have that little pink Sharp 3" color set in my watched list on ebay......but $200 between BIN and shipping is deffinately too rich for me for now.

I felt that I was "priced out" of the pink Sharp market and settled for a nice white one. Not the attention getter of the pink, but still an interesting piece for the collection. If I am not mistaken, I think Sandy_G has all 3 colors...very cool!

The very early picture of Pip is somewhat misleading in that his coat is more of the light brown color of an Aby and he is somewhat slender. Now that he is fully grown, his breed (Sable Burmese) is more apparent. More recent picture on the "cats are funny" thread:

Yeah- I got the Pepto-Bismol colored one about 10 yrs ago for like $20 or somesuch. I have the black & ivory models, too, but they were LOTS more moolah. DON'T have-and can't remember if I've ever even seen- the silver/grey version. But I also have the RCA-clone, which uses a different case.

BUMMER!!

I was looking at the little CRT with the broken focus pin through some reading glasses and one of those "helping hands" thing with the magnifying glass.....and the SECOND I went to feel with a small phillips screwdriver to see if I coud "feel" the remainder of the pin....I necked the little nub in the middle :dammit: :wtf:   (all in THAT order pretty much)

I forgot I had pretty much NO depth perception with all the magnification....and I pretty much SMACKED the back of the thing RIGHT away with the screwdriver.

NOW I guess I'm done with that little set for now....until I find another CRT for the poor little thing. At least I know from subbing one of the Maggie CRTs from a Shadow the other day, that all it needs is the little CRT.

Ouch !! Do those l'il guys make that "Hissing" noise as they go to air ? I feel for ya, pal...That's one reason I don't work on 'em, I have HUGE ginormous paws, bad enuff in & of themselves, plus bein' TERMINABLY clumsy, & to top it off, I've lost a lot of dexterity due to a stroke, & Dear Old Uncle Arthur...

Yeah...made a small hiss, but wasn't very long at all. The crack of the glass was MUCH more apparent :tears:

Hope Eric is still open to me maybe getting that little parts CRT he had laying around. Still open to buy it from him, shipping...or whatever. I'm WATCHING a little pink Magnavox Shadow I really want on the ebay.....but obviously THAT is not gonna be a parts set. Not by a LONG shot! That one has a place RIGHT next to all three of these little "cube" sets.

I'll feel MUCH better about what I done to this poor little guy when I know he'll be reborn into a little TRIO of the little cuties :D

Bump!

Eric...You still willing to shoot me over that little 4.5" CRT?

I did PM you about shipping stuff...and still willing to slide a few bucks via PayPal for this little CRT.
