DaveWM 07-06-2012, 01:48 PM this is a set with no cabinet (termites). the plan is to just clean it up and maybe mount on a nice base with some rubber feet, put it out for demo to show off the tubes. My only issue is it came from a set that had the CRT mounted to the cabinet, so I need to figure out a way to make up a mount that I can affix to the chassis. I also like the idea of an exposed chassis that lets me do a CRT test with a working chassis, since B&W tubes often look fine even though they test weak. I posted a bunch more over on ARF about how I got this far, but figured I would post the end result to share with those that are primary VK folks.
mstaton 07-06-2012, 02:02 PM Nice picture on thaty set.
DaveWM 07-06-2012, 02:14 PM this was an experiment in TV repair vs restoration. I went over it in some detail over there, but to summarize I wanted to see how little I could do to get a set up and running. By little I mean part replacement as I know its common practice to shot gun all caps. On this set I ended up leaving all the orig can caps (One had been replaced at some time in the past maybe two) all resistors were left alone, most of the film caps had to be replaced (wax and bumble bee, they just tested way too leaky for me to even consider). And two really bad tubes (hv rec with no emission and a shorted tube somewhere else).
I did take the time to reform each section of the cans, out of circuit, but thats it. The only real problem was an incorrect horz osc coil that kept the HV from wokring. I dont know what the deal was as the set came from an old tv shop so maybe someone was trying to fix it and did not have the correct coil, and tried to make it work (had a miller 6194 needed a 6183).
after getting the HV back the vert would not sync up and had very bad fold over. That was fixed with some spray on the vert hold pot, did not expect it to be that easy as the pot seemed to be working as far as having some effect.
What I really wanted was to get it to a min operating state and then try my diagnostic skills out on fixing it (like using the 1076 to trouble shoot the HV). So leaving in a few faults was ok.
I plan to fuse the B+ and see how well the reformed can caps hold up. will run it a bit everyday rather than letting it sit for 6 months then slamming the B+ back into it.
DaveWM 07-06-2012, 03:29 PM I did leave in all the mica caps, including the ones in the sweep circuits. I have had issues in the past with those, but again, the idea being to leave them alone and maybe have to trouble shoot a cap. that way I can see the problem and, hopefully, use some logic and trouble shooting skill to see if I can zero in on the problem. So far so good on sync and sweep, almost hope a problem will develop just so I can find it. The one kind of problem I did NOT want to trouble shoot is a short circuit or cap polarity issue due to my shotgunning of parts.
David Roper 07-06-2012, 06:16 PM It is an excellent chassis. In my (admittedly limited) experience it is a much better chassis than a Du Mont 103: easier to get working and a better performer overall.
Sandy G 07-06-2012, 06:56 PM You could always "Spiff" the chassis up a bit, spray-paint it grey, & just leave it/use it as is...I have a Scott 800-B chassis-no TV-but I have no real desire to ever try to get a cab for it, the chrome is SO pretty w/all the Firebottles a-glowin'...
DaveWM 07-06-2012, 08:17 PM its not to pretty, some small rust spots, prob a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10.
I was thinking of doing some experiments with ways to clean it, as I do plan to have it out in the open, mostly as a conversation piece (ha ha isn't that what the fish tankers say). I did leave on film cap in, a .05 black beauty near the damper tube, and a "tone" cap off the loudness tap, the true audiofools should like that.
DaveWM 07-06-2012, 08:18 PM if anyone has any pics of the chassis CRT mount hardware please post a pic, could use some help on how to best do that part.
DaveWM 07-06-2012, 08:35 PM I just realized my T-120 mount hardware should be close to what I need so hopefully I can copy it to use to mount the 10BP4
DaveWM 07-06-2012, 09:06 PM hmmm interesting the HV sags quite a bit (down to 6kv from 8kv) with max beam current in CRT. Think I subbed the HOT no change, next will be the damper. The HV rectifier is NOS. I wonder if its possible the resistor in the filament circuit could be high dropping the emission of the 1B3?
Looks like I got my wish some problems to trouble shoot :banana:
for starters I think I will get my 1076 out and do the plate drive thing and see if it still blooms, that should isolate the problem some what.
DaveWM 07-06-2012, 09:58 PM corona discharge sound coming when HV down, not sure what happened but I think it may have been coming from around the HV anode. I was moving the chassis to try and get a better look and it stopped and the HV popped back up.
Time to call it quits for tonight
Boobtubeman 07-06-2012, 11:46 PM Heres how the 10BP4 mounts on my RCA...

Dave-
I removed and reinstalled the CRT in my 8-T-241 a while back but I did not take any pictures. It is comparable to how a 630TS or 8TS30 holds its CRT; the center part of the front panel with the screen/mask unbolts from the rest of the front panel, which has a round hole larger than the CRT's diameter and some adjustable metal clips with rubber bumpers to hold the CRT's front rim centered.
If Steve (Boobtubeman) built his mount for the chassis in his picture, that could give you ideas of what to make for yours. You need something that bolts onto or under the chassis and then supports the underside of the CRT, with a strap or other item around the top. Be careful!
snelson903 07-07-2012, 03:46 AM Heres how the 10BP4 mounts on my RCA...
Steve
ha i got the same chassis on one of my side benches its out of 49-50 rca victor use's the 12Lp4 TUBE its been a project i pick around on every once in awhile, its been all recaped and i restuffed the large can caps on # c4 one of replaced caps after stuffing is a 10 mfd 450v on mine it runs hot every other cap is nice and cool on the chassis .its connected with vert output trans and yoke i thought it just might be a cheap miec cap tried another samething i clipped in a 20mfd 450v its ok runs normial , i checked the resistance of the yoke and vert output trans, the output trans shows lower than it should ,i havent realy devoted alot of checkout time with this chassis just wondering have you had any similer problem with yours. i probley should try a different manufacture of caps a 10mfd 450 before i do anything more just in case i have a problem with the lot 10mfd i have ,mybe there realy 250v and there marked 450v.
DaveWM 07-07-2012, 08:44 AM Thanks for the pics guys. Had not noticed the hot running caps, but good to know. If you have one a cap tester that can test for leakage at rated voltage and power factor or ESR may be a way to look into those caps. I always check the new caps that go into sets, I do not really trust a lot of the stuff that comes out of China, I sometimes wonder about the quality control, but since they seem to be the sole source for most everything you have to buy and check. Its one of the reasons I do not rush right out and replace all the cans anymore. I have found that often the existing cans work fine. Prob 1/2 or more of my mid 60's sets have the orig Mallory cans and work fine. I DO recommend fusing the B+ right before the 1st doubler or filter, regardless of new or old caps. Its seems logical since that (Ecaps) is the only place where there is a chemical product in the set.
I am going to have to study this for a while (the CRT mount) I def want it attached to the chassis so I can flip it on its side and be able to work on it.
Boobtubeman 07-07-2012, 10:47 AM The ring mount in my pic is original i believe, I didnt make it. A simple ring clip that has 2 mounting brackets attached to both exteneded parts of the front chassis. It holds the CRT in place and enables me to flip the tv around when servicing :)
Steve
DaveWM 07-07-2012, 11:09 AM if anybody has a scrap chassis like this with that mount let me know, I would like to buy one rather than fabricate it.
DaveWM 07-08-2012, 10:38 PM I rigged something up that seems solid, some more pics
DaveWM 07-08-2012, 10:41 PM here are the pics
Tubejunke 08-02-2012, 03:02 AM I have an 8T-243 set in good condition that I would like to move. I was going to restore it, but I have too many other irons in the fire and to be small sets these things are really heavy! Like other sets that old, I did have to work on the power supply in order to save a few 5U4 rectifiers from flaming out. Surprisingly, the set came closer to working than I would have ever suspected for a set that was likely dormant since the 60s (I would imagine). Of course it still will need a recap, but all of the essentials have been verified as good. Email me at [email protected] if interested.
Geist 12-18-2012, 10:03 AM Hi All;
I have a 8T244, which is like yours.. On the other site, I have been told not to plug mine in any more until I Re-cap it.. I had run it for hours at a time about 3 to 5 years ago when I last had it on the table to work on.. I would be interested in what you did to Re-forn your caps.. I can't say it will help my set, but I can look at what you say and then decide.. I also had problems with it arching around my Flyback, and even after doping and such it sttill would arc a little.. So, I finially just put an old Bicycle inner tube along the top around to the bottom of the flyback, and no more arching.. I know that some would scoff at that, but it works..:banana:
THANK YOU Marty
DaveWM 12-18-2012, 10:21 AM after replacing all the wax paper caps, I disconnected the can caps from the circuit (did not remove them from the chassis, just disconnected the terminals), and then used a vintage eye tube type cap tester. I started out on the lowest voltage leak test (25v IIRC) and would fix the test knob so the voltage would stay applied for an extended period. Most of the sections tested shorted (eye would not open), but over time the eye would open, when it did I would switch to the next higher voltage and repeat the process until the eye would fully open at the rated voltage.
I do not think the process would have worked as well if I had just used a variac for a lot of reasons that I don't want to take the time to document.
Variacs are useful tools but not for reforming.
Note, I am not saying this technique will always work or if it works how long the caps may last. In fact if I was repairing the set for someone I would not even bother, rather I would prob just put in new caps, it would be faster and prob safer, but I like to experiment and that was what this one was about.
Lastly I always put a fuse on the B+, and size it so it will blow quickly. If SS rectifier is used I will add a thermistor to allow for a fuse that is also just above the max operating current (inrush will blow a fuse too close to max).
Fusing should be done regardless of what is done about caps (reform or new), frankly new caps can fail, and in some cases I think a good old can cap may outlast some BS china cap.
Geist 12-18-2012, 10:48 AM Hi All;
Dave can you tell me which Cap tester you have ?? I have a Solar Exam-eter Model CF.. I don't even know IF it works.. And I need to get the manual for it, I found the site the other day, but had ran out of printer paper, from before, so I did not print it..
THANK YOU Marty
DaveWM 12-18-2012, 11:02 AM Heath kit. Pretty much any old school cap tester should work, just need something that has a leak test that goes up high enough (think mine is 450v tops). Some testers use an eye tube, others a meter, the meter is prob better, I ofter will put a current meter in series with the cap to see exactly how much leakage there is (even with a fully open eye they will leak some). comparing to a new cap gives you an idea of how good an old one is. I recall there is a table somewhere that shows the allowable leakage in mA by capacity.
Geist 12-18-2012, 11:24 AM Hi Dave;
Good old Heath Kit.. Thank You for the info..
THANK YOU Marty

I have owned and regularly used an 8T243 for forty three years. It still has its original electrolytics (all of them) and it works fine. I replaced the paper capacitors in the early '70's with (then) brand new Sprague Orange Drops.
I have cleaned out the HV cage every decade or so. Are you seeing actual arcing or is it a corona discharge (eg hissing)? Problems or corona are generally due to contamination (dirt) or sharp points. Making sure everything is clean and connections are well rounded eliminate the problem.
Geist 12-18-2012, 03:02 PM Hi All;
I have not powered it up, since I was told not to, so I can't say, that If I remove the inner tube, that the arching or hissing would return.. The last time I really worked on it was about 3 to 4 years ago.. I don't remember why I stopped.. I do know that, there was a problem, with when a cap was hooked up, the signal would disappear from the screen, (I can't remember If I lost Raster).. After reading many of the posting recently, I have two possible conclustions, one is the cap is bad or very leaky or shorted.. or, it is connected to the wrong point on one end.. I know it is in the right area, but the Sams photos are not clear enough for me to know for sure.. Eventually, I will need to check every connection in the area and make sure all is correct.. Also, since it has been that long since I worked on it, that I might have already removed the offending cap, and it is no longer there.. Also, another problem to throw into the mix, is When I first got the set, I had no picture at all.. I later put in a 5BP4 (I think number is correct) from my other B&K 1077, and got a picture, so I knew that the HV section worked after all.. But, every and I mean Every knob and control and anything that could be adjusted had been fiddled with trying to get a picture on the 10BP4.. I a little later got for Free an origional 10BP4, with a date of 9-49 on it.. (Calvideo).. I got some raster on it.. But, since I tried it about a week ago, it showed nothing, But, I didn't fidle with any controls, and put in the 5BP4, fiddled with the controls a little and got a partial picture.. Since then I have NOT turned on the Set.. But, watching all of the other early restorations, just makes me want to get this set going, at least somewhat.. But, until I can save up enough for the Electrolytics (about $70.00) and that doesn't include all the wax caps, etc.. So, this is the state of where the set is at present.. So, possibly I could remove the inner tube and it would be fine.. Just don't know for now..
THANK YOU Marty
tvdude1 12-18-2012, 03:03 PM Hey Dave I have a good 8t 246 cabinet same chassis you can have. With back also.
tvdude1 12-18-2012, 03:06 PM Sorry its a 8t243 same it will work. My mistake.
Penthode 12-18-2012, 03:17 PM The electrolytics on these sets are very good quality. I have had four late forties RCA sets and have reformed them all. One went bad: it opened up. I have never had a shorted electrolytic on these sets.
I would encourage you to test and reform them. I is very straightforward and you can easily determine if you are successful or not.
Geist 12-18-2012, 03:38 PM Hi All;
I guess what scares me is, what If I burn up something like the power transformer, that are not easily found.. And I am not sure I could rewind one.. :tears:
THANK YOU Marty
