View Full Version : Mis-aligned color

The color on my TV is not aligned very well. For example, it's not centered ontop of the luma signal good. See the mario bro's coin symbol at the top.

Once again, no POTs to adjust this.

Is this going to be caps again? Ugh, I just fixed the flyback, I don't need to be tinkering with this chassis, I just want to enjoy it.

Red smear = weak crt lots of the time

Did it look like this before you replaced the flyback?
Perhaps maybe the yoke assy. is loose? Could also be that the convergence rings may have been disturbed. Usually there sealed with some type of glue/paint.:scratch2:

Given the age of the set ... weak crt

lnx64

Can't be weak CRT and it did this before flyback. On a greyscale image no problems at all.

Is your game console on top of tv? Yeah, i know i'm reaching....:D

Always a crap shoot diagnosing from a screen still but sure looks like a weak crt and static converg appears off as well. Of course as others have posted could be other probs.

I see all color smeared - blue into green as well as red into blue. I don't trust the game console. Does it look this bad on a better source like a DVD or cable? Have you tried to see if it changes with fine tuning?

lnx64
05-19-2012, 03:55 PM
Happens on all sources. I tried fine tuning and while it helps a little doesn't fix it all the way. If for example I hook the tv up to the Lima output of my DVD player for a pure monochrome image there is no color bleed. This leads me to believe the CRT is fine. I'll try and get a cross hatch pattern tonight for convergence.

Hmmm- delay line problem, or misalignment somehow?

mstaton

Could be an IF alignment issue. did you try channel 4?

lnx64
05-19-2012, 05:19 PM
Yes tried 3 and 4. Happens on all VHF cable channels too

The smear from a weak crt never shows up on the greyscale only on colors smeared to the right and red is always the worst.

Really? I thought they did. On my hitachi on a greyscale screen at high contrast it bleeds.

if you find it is a weak crt, sometimes but not always, you can set for a b/w pix and adjust the color and tint slowly forward and get a nice picture ... a case in point

in front of me is a '96 production RCA 36" set with a weak crt ... with the remote and the aux controls i adjusted the set slowly advancing the color to ~ 75% and keeping the tint weighted heavily towards green ... now have an excellent picture

how long will it last? a roll of the dice it is ... could be 15 min ... 15 days ... 15 years
mine has lasted several months with no sign of degradation

When I first got the TV I had to turn the red guns up because the picture was green tinted so who knows maybe the red gun is going weak

Do you have a CRT tester?

lnx64
05-19-2012, 11:05 PM
Nope, but if someone here in Florida does and knows how to use it, I'll be happy to let them run a test.

mstaton

That's the ONLY way to find out for sure.

lnx64
05-19-2012, 11:33 PM
Ok. For the time being I got some test patterns run on it, and calibrated tint and color controls.

Convergence isn't all that bad, but the color bars do seem a little strange on the transition between colors..

Nothing wrong with this set that I can see...

lnx64
05-20-2012, 12:34 AM
Meh, maybe I'm just looking too far into it because of the flyback problems. I'm probably looking for flaws when I should just be enjoying it.

You will never see bleed with an ntsc generator, you need a simple color bar generator to see the offset. Also you can't set the tint with your generator and expect it to be consistent with all your sources because the burst frequency will never be exactly the same between sources.

From your descriptions, you probably have a weak CRT, but that is not causing this problem.

I'm seeing a very faint ghost or ringing.

This trailing ghost is also in the B&W convergence chart so that eliminates the color circuits for now.

Ghosts can create or exaggerate an existing minor color smear.

Don't waste time on on the game source, as these usually have crappy color.

Test the signal source you used for the two test patterns on a modern set. Can you still see the single ghost there?

If so, check your connecting cables and the source.

If not, connect it back to the old set with using a signal attenuator.

If you don't have an attenuator, try adjusting the AGC on the TV, as a slight signal over load can cause this. Also check the fine tuning. If it is off slightly, that too can cause ringing.

This is a general trouble shooting example. I cannot be too specific, as this TV is newer than I'm use to working on.

James.

Have you tried a different cable between your source and the set?

I used to service rental TV systems... I could tell some tales there, but I digress... The customers would kink the cables often just to have the company send us out... Or, rip the cable end connector off, and scream at the company until I came out, and often demand a reduction on the rent for the week, etc....

The picture on your set looks pretty good for a set of this vintage.

I don't want to take apart the TV right now so I'll try and attenuate it externally. The TV also has 300 ohm screws, could I just use one of those adapters, 75 ohms to 300 ohms to attenuate the signal, since they would have slightly signal loss?

EDIT: Actually, on the Hitachi, there's some ringing too: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v395/Evilweredragon/IMG_0226.jpg

But it doesn't bleed it's colors unless the contrast is cranked up, cause IT does have a weak CRT.

EDIT: Tried different cables, all same results. I even tried cables I made, using RG-6 with compression fit ends.

If both sets have the ghost then suspect that the cause of the trouble is in the signal generator. You need to get rid of the ghost before worrying about the color.

The 300 ohm adapter probably wont help, but since it is a quick and easy test, I'd try it.

Do you have a transfer switch or two-set coupler between the signal generator and the TV? Either would be a prime suspect.

A reflected signal like this ghost is usually caused by an incorrectly terminated connector, or by overload, or by both.

Some sets were imperfect when they left the factory, probably more true of a once low end brand like Samsung.
This set seems to be performing pretty well actually, I think you might be chasing problems that there is no solution for.

Possibly a complete alignment of the video and chroma circuits might help but that's going to require the services of someone with the knowledge and equipment to do it.

Looks to me like crappy luminance channel / delay line design combined with narrow-band smeary chroma. Could be something actually wrong around the delay line, but probably they were all like this. Fiddling with chroma alignment *might* reduce the chroma smear somewhat also, but I wouldn't bet on it.

mstaton

Maybe just leave it alone and enjoy it. You might make it worse fiddling with it.

I actually said that a few posts back. ;)

I calibrated to the Roku box, which is something I use most, and prefer IT to be the accurate device.

Looks nice to me.

Since making the adjustments in the thread: http://www.videokarma.org/showthread.php?t=254375

It looks a LOT better, even on video games: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v395/Evilweredragon/IMG_0529.jpg
