I posted a thread on AK (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=442100) about my problem, and was referred here.

To put things shortly, my 1994 CRT television has developed a strange problem. Picture and sound are fine, but after viewing it for 15 or 20 minutes, the picture compresses vertically to almost a 16:9 ratio. A nice whack on the top fixes it right up. If I don't whack it, eventually it compresses to almost a line. It is also sensitive to vibration, walking or jumping around it makes the image jump vertically.

I'm getting pretty tired of whacking it every 20 minutes, so I was wondering if this is fixable? I quite like this TV, and would love to have it keep working.

First place I would look, is the area around the vertical output IC. The chip runs rather warm, even though it's on a heat-sink. Also the 'lytics around that area dry out after all those years. They should be replaced.
I meant to say, check the soldering on the print side of the IC.:yes:

Sounds like you've pretty much narrowed it down to something loose. A bad solder connection or connector plug in the vertical circuit to the yolk.

Re-solder the vertical output IC. I've seen this problem on many brands of TV's. They are often not soldered very good to begin with and years of constant heating and cooling causes micro-cracks to develop in the solder; thus, causing an intermittent connection. It also wouldn't hurt to replace the electrolytic caps around the IC; but, I'm sure some fresh solder on the IC will fix the problem.

For anyone wondering, it was the vertical IC. Set works fine now (for what that's worth).

I had a TV that had the same issue years ago I believe the one I had that had the issue was a late 1980s Sears SR2000 TV that some friends of my parents had given me to monkey around with, had I known at the time what it was I could of fixed it and still had the TV but I didn't know better then and I threw it out. :sigh:
