Got an odd call yesterday from a friend about a TV stash, an estate of a former repairman.

There must have been at least 30 consoles, I kid you not. Table models, probably around the same amount. I guess he'd sold about 15 table model 50s B&W sets before I got there, to a local collector.

Came home with a few treasures, a pair of RCA CTC-36 portables in great shape, a GE VIR 19" set, a Philco 23" b/w console, a Portacolor, and an RCA CTC-25 console. Plugged in one of the CTC-36 portables for the heck of it, and she came right up :D

There's a CTC-4 "Director", and a CTC-11 still there, both missing the chassis, but I believe I found the chassis to the 4 in the garage. Both cabinets are in respectable shape. He was asking $100-$150 each for them, but I passed for now. Also spotted a nice Admiral 19A12. Of the other rectangular tube sets there, he also had 3 or 4 Quasar tube consoles, a couple Zeniths (late 60s I'd guess), a Curtis Mathes, and a couple others. Some were solid state as well.

Post yer "wish lists now".....but you gotta pick them up at my place ;) . I'll post pics when I can, my back is friggin KILLING me! :)

I might be interested in the 4. How complete is it? And what is the state of the cabinet?

Your mentioning of the 4 chassis separate from the cabinet suggests there are other bits and pieces. Are there parts for old sets available?

If there was a separate 21AXP22 CRT, I need one for my '57 Muntz 721CV. Mine has open filaments.

The CTC4 cabinet is complete with the picture tube. The cabinet looks darn good, honestly. I "think" the lower grille script might not have been complete, I couldn't really tell as it was in a dark corner and I was working with a flashlight, but otherwise it looked great. It's been sitting in a dry basement since, my guess, at the very least the Nixon administration. There's no separate picture tubes there, just the two in the cabinets.

Parts? My God, yes. TONS of parts, tubes, and such in boxes. The one part that I really wanted though, a convergence board for my 1971 Zenith, none sighted.

Flybacks?, looking for a fly for a CTC-5

I didn't see NOS anything except tubes and some resistors. There might be one there, but searching for it there is akin to a needle in a proverbial haystack, and even if I found it, I can't verify it's any good.

Still, if I do go back (which I probably will), I'd be willing to look for one, you just need to give me stamp markings on the piece and a picture of it would help as well....

Tim, I would laugh at you about the back-But I'm pretty much there myself. Just wait til you get t'be 55....you'll hurt in place you didn't even know you HAD...(grin)

Is it possible to get some photos of the stuff that is there?

For my recent mid sixties Zenith color acquisition, I need the volume control and channel selector knobs and the little front door which conceals the controls.

Not to open too large a can of worms (and in consideration of your back) perhaps we as a group help you disperse the cache?

I've got pretty much what I want. The guy wants $20 each for the remaining sets, aside from the roundies. If you guys want to pony up a Jackson a piece, I'll go get them and part them out or save them for you as is. Or drive to Buffalo :)

As I said, there's boxes on boxes of knobs, parts, test equipment, you name it.

I seem to recall one Zenith set was an unusually tiny console, I'm guessing it was maybe a 17" color or something. Almost looked like a table model console, if there is such a thing aside from that mini-RCA one. Again, from memory, there were 3 Quasar tube consoles, 3 or 4 Zenith rectangulars, and one RCA that I believe is this set:

Also, at least one or two offbrand jobs. Couple XL-100 consoles also. Has a really nice untouched Admiral 7" 19A12 also. I could fill my full-size Chevy van 5 times and not cart it all away.

Man, nothing warms the heart than seeing one of these old gals come back to life. After a slow power-up, the tubes warmed and the set came sparkling back to life :)

In return for picking these up, though, I might ask for help looking at my flyback job on my CTC-12 in return, if that's acceptable :) .

I like that little RCA color set, they are nice and too big.

Got two of those, both very similar. Apparently "portable" to RCA engineers at the time meant "all the weight of a console with a convenient carry handle". You could use these things as counterweights for a suspension bridge.

Well, I've got two of em here. I bought em cause I liked em, but I have no objections with parting with one or both if you like them more :) . I'm not one to deny the sets a happy home, even if it's not mine.

I don't need to make any money on them, I paid $20 each.....but I warn you, once I start tearing them apart and cleaning and fooling with them they're mine :D so if you want them, get your ducks in a row and they're yours for the same $20 each.

These are CTC-36 chassis, they use the 19HNP22 picture tube, and tip the scales at a whopping 65 pounds each according to the old bathroom scale. Ain't no way I can box these suckers reliably, but if you've got a plan, lay it on me......

does not look like they will pass the WAF right now, so will have to pass, but I know you will enjoy them. they are neat sets. Hope the CRTs test strong. Looking forward to seeing you start in on them (that is if nobody else takes you up one of them). I recently got a porta color, I think you will like the one you have there, they are neat, not the best pic but cute and small.

Spoke to the owner this morning. I'm going back over to photograph all this stuff along with old test equipment, etc. Seems that everyone that wanted to pick through this already has, and there's a TON left.

Went over today and shot pics of everything still there. Hopefully someone spots something they like :)

Within a month, I'll be in the Shamokin PA area, and have a trailer in tow. I hadn't seen that Admiral portable before the trip there yesterday, it's too bad about the cataract. Still worth doing IMO.

BTW I have an 1980 RCA like #4 I am taking to the recycle, it has a weak CRT but works.
I also have TWO Zeniths like #7 (19DC11) that both work super-duper.

I plan on calling Pat tomorrow. Please make sure that if you want one or more of these sets, or parts, or whatever, to call Pat and make sure you and he have a positive ID of what you want, and settle on a price. If you're paying him, pay him. If I'm paying him, let me know in a PM how much cash to bring.

Once that's all settled, I'll go over with my van and pick up what you want. I just want to leave as little room as possible for error if I can. If I need to hold it for you for six months, no problem.

Once again, I'm just outside Buffalo. I can transport to Erie, Rochester (think AWA meet in late summer) Shamokin PA, and Cleveland.

I'd check to see if the tubes light. If not probably the power cord or interlock (my 71' Zenith's interlock likes to unplug it's self when moved).

Tubes light, has a full bright raster but no picture or snow. Checked to see if I'd done something stupid and bumped a service switch, but that isn't the case. Got halfway through checking the tubes, replaced one bad 6GH8. Still nada. Oh well, I'll do some more work tonight, it's 34 degrees and snowing here in Buffalo in late April. A good reason to stay in and work on the set.....

Just odd that I'd put about 5 or 6 hours of watching on the set, and it dies the moment I wanna show it to someone. Or, maybe it isn't odd at all......

Went through the rest of the tubes yesterday, everything checks out fine. I am not looking forward to attempting a re-cap of this set. Maybe it'll be something that the next owner can figure out?

RCA sets like that need a good solder-joint review, especially the ground eyelets on the PW (printed wiring boards). Then maybe a power supply voltage check. I doubt the cause is very hard to find. Seems like it would be tuner-IF related based on your description.
That is one nice cabinet, French Provincial as I recall.

Got one of the portables going! I'm thinking this may be 1969 or '70, but I can't find any tag data on it....
