Opinions on Proton TV's. (Not Protron).

Great sets! Made by Hitachi Industrial division, and weigh a ton. The only problems I ever saw with those, was the FBT blowing. They had a great picture, and were grossly over-engineered and overbuilt ;-) . I've never personally owned one, as they're pretty rare (and cost a plenty when new in the late 80s - early 90s). I'd like to get hold of a 619 or 625 some day if one shows up.

I remember seeing one on an antenna at a high end audio and video store back in the late 80s. The picture was beautiful, and crisp. I do recall it being rather expensive.

Those were the only sets I saw in the late 80s or around 1990 that could compete with Sony Trinitrons. They cost as much or more, though.

Flybacks, power supply regulator IC's, capacitors in vertical and power supply. On the 36 inch, CRT's shorting out were a serious problem. Our local audio/video dealer sold them and the Sampo built NAD 20 and 25 inch sets. Fixed many of them! I know of at least two Proton's still going (25 inch monitor only, very early ones)! The 19 inch monitor was very popular around here.
The early ones had the RGB socket but the sync was different than most computers.

I have two Proton TV's. A 619 and a NT-2120. Both are still working, but both have their quirks.

The 619, intermittently, goes dead. Wrapping the side of the set, brings it back to life. The volume has a tendency to fade away, and distort, but all by itself restores itself.

The NT-2120 would also go dead, but that was corrected, cold solder connections were the cause.

All in all, with their problems, good sets, with plenty of life left.
