Back in the early 1980's.......I sought after a number of vintage RCA color tv sets. An RCA2000(ctc47), ANY one of the RCA CTC-5 sets, and an RCA "Direct address" set(CTC-81 or 74). I figured that the DA set would be the EASIEST to find, as it was the newest, and made when color tv was "the norm", from 1975-77. On the other hand...the RCA2000 was a VERY rare, expensive set--made with "cutting edge" circuitry, like electronic tuning and remote, SS high voltage, matrix tube and so on. And the CTC--5 was made when Color tv was still "new and rare", and I was told by a number of people then.."those are all but extinct, you will probably NEVER get one--unless you pay a LOT for one".

Nearly 30 years later...I have TWO RCA 2000 sets... and one CTC-5D--which I did NOT have to pay an exorbitant amount for, was not that far of a drive, which is in fair shape cabinet wise--and which(according to my CR-70),has a LIKE NEW Picture tube!!

Another so called "unlikely find...the RCA CTC-44.. Few claimed to have even seen one, as they were made ONLY for 1971. But nonetheless. I have TWO of them!!

But I STILL do NOT have...nor know WHERE to get an RCA Direct address set!! I ALMOST got one a coupe of years ago from CL--but the ad was "pulled" before I could get it--perhaps I "gave too much away", as the set was a "come and get it" set--and I offered to buy it anyway....maybe they THEN figured out it was NOT just an "old junk tv set".

I also ALMOST got one in 1987, from behind a tv shop. This was a console model, like the CL one, but the tube had been busted. Still...I wanted it. I "waited too long" though to get it--(since I needed help--and could not get it till the next day), and THEN--the DAP package was gone and the modules were physically broken--likely on PURPOSE. And again that year....I ALMOST got a PORTABLE model, the CTC74 with DA, at a TV shop I then worked for. But they were "Afraid to let it go" in case the owner would "come back for it" even though it had been years. Not long after that....I quit that job after not getting paid fairly for some time, and soon after--the shop went out of business--and that tv probably went to a packer--truck...and then the dump.....

SO I wonder....just WHY is the Direct address set SO darn hard to find??? They were made for several years. They were NOT some" super duper set" like the 2000. Nor were they made that long ago. But still I can't get one!! Not on CL.. not on EBAY..not even on HERE!!

I'd love to see schematic diagrams and pictorial layouts of the 2000, and I imagine the lit on that chassis is extensive. My collection of RCA factory service notebooks don't go past 1973. Happy to know that some of those legendary sets survive, and are being preserved.
Had a CTC-44, but it "escaped":tears:. Do have a CTC-40 chassis, and all the neck components, so maybe one day a good cabinet will pop up :no:.

I've never seen the DA version of the CTC74 or 81. I've had a few CTC74's/81's; but, they used a more common motorized remote controlled varactor tuner. I'm sure most people in my area opted for the less expensive set with a regular tuner. By far, the most common '70's RCA finds for me are the upright XL100 chassis and the flat modular chassis that was used in the last delta gun colortrak and XL100 sets.

Hey!!! I have the Service Manual for the RCA Direct Address Package. It is EXTREMELY Complicated Television System Control System. I have agreed with you that it have bee found on those top-of line CTC 74's and CTC 81's

I will have to get it out!!!

Is that the "upholstered" remote? I have one or two, and have seen several of those TVs not long ago. You'll find one. I think that's the only TV ever made which you could not turn on without the remote.

Pretty sure that the 2000 was made in 1968 or 69 so it may be in your literature.

Is that the "upholstered" remote? I have one or two, and have seen several of those TVs not long ago. You'll find one. I think that's the only TV ever made which you could not turn on without the remote.

I picked up a Quasar that was the same. It came with a remote that fit into a space on the front of the cabinet. If the batteries went dead, you couldn't use the set.:sigh:

I have a 1970 RCA product book that list the CTC47 (G2000) as a new chassis for 1970.

Hmm. Could it be possible that the CTC47 was new for the general masses in '70 but a sort-of "special order" item in '69? I vaguely recall the ad I read here that it was 2k for 2k people to step into the year 2k. In '69 , RCA color set sales must have exceeded three times that. you tell me.

*About the RCA -74 and -81 sets. I am a huge fan of radio corp's quality solid-state televisions as seen in my classified ads over the years. Even if the pic tubes weren't always the best, they certainly trumped stuff from the last days of NTSC, & more importantly, those chassis(up 'til say, the ctc130) can easily outlast more than one crt with only basic repair. Save them.

I think I remember seeing a Panasonic version of that Quasar... The remote stuck on a magnetic panel that popped in & out, right? If so, I thought there was a power button at least, behind a door. Not sure though.

We had a Panasonic console when I was a kid and the remote stored vertically aimed outwards in that magnetic push-in compartment on the front of the set. Behind the door were the basic control buttons for channel up/down, vol. up/down and power and knob adjustments for color, tint etc. The remote also added direct numeric entry of the channel number to these functions and could be used while stowed in the storage compartment. It was not necessary to use the remote to operate the set.

I have to look at it again. I picked it up a few years ago. I know it works and remember you have to use the remote for most, if not all functions.:boring:
