View Full Version : Post those 1950s color roundies
tvtimeisfun 01-23-2012, 04:41 PM :banana::banana:Hey everybody show us your roundies I have a RCA VICTOR CTC9 blonde cabinet 1 day a friend of mine showed me this set so I offered him 300 clams for this tv back in 1999 when my flea market was doing well so he kept himholling around and then 1 day in 2002 after the death of my 11 year old daughter another friend that we knew in common was having a yard sale and this tv was stored in his basement so I picked it up for 50 bucks and boy was our friend mad at both of us he does not speak to us any more so whatever happens do not store any vintage set in a friends basement his loss is my gain..:yes::thmbsp::banana::banana::banana:
kvflyer 01-23-2012, 06:54 PM Here is a CTC-9C (I think) that I got just about a year ago. This photo was taken whilst it was sitting in the driveway right after I brought it home. It was about 18 degrees and windy that day! All that I have done is to replace the CRT because the one in this set had zero emission on all three guns. It had been running with a "brightener" on it. I replaced the electrolytic capacitors and it got a raster so I was very, very happy. It is in queue now...

It's as simple as having the cash to buy one, my friend...
Eric H 01-23-2012, 08:54 PM I've still got Mr Anderson to fix someday.
That would be a 1958 CTC 7.
I've got the itch to get back in to it soon, right now a early 60's Silvertone took cuts in line and is getting my attention first, for no other reason than it may be easier to get going.

Not that I'm one-upping you, but...
1957 version of the same set. :smoke:

I like stealing them - sneaking a CTC-9 through a window while the family slept was one of the greatest thrills of my life.

It's rough, but ain't no one getting it from me without a fight (or a ridiculous sum of cash/crazy far-in-my-favor trade).
Ampico-kid 01-23-2012, 11:20 PM Here's a 1959 RCA CTC9 Caulfield set. Needed filters, a few tubes, some cleaning, and a thorough set up. Has the original 21CYP22 crt. Looks pretty good for 53 years old.

Here's a 1957 RCA CTC5 Aldrich with the optional base and the Super chassis. This set needed a full restoration of the chassis, some tubes, and a full set up. Still has the original 21AXP22 crt.

mstaton 01-24-2012, 11:23 AM Here's a 1956 CTC-5 super(The Stanwyck). Needs a complete restoration. Not the original CRT(21cyp22). Also a 1959 CTC9A just like Ampico-Kids's. Works but needs more love. Very high hours set and not the original CRT. It has had at least 5 replacements. The last one in 1983 not including the one I did. Original hang-tag.
holmesuser01 01-24-2012, 05:09 PM I really like these CTC-9's I'm seeing. My CTC 10C works, but could probably benefit with filters and capacitors. I've been running it since 1975, and replaced the OEM broken CYP22 with a well-used FBP22 in 1975, and a brand new rebuilt in 1982. And here it sits. As soon as I can get it uncovered and turned so I can take a picture of it in operation, I'll post it here.
miniman82 01-24-2012, 06:43 PM I really like the cabinet styles of the CTC-9 series, they are some of the best looking sets IMO. I used to have a set called The Atherton, but sold it to another member.
My newly acquired CTC-9, The Kenbridge, with remote control. I've been so busy lately, I haven't done any work on it at all yet. From this thread it looks as if there are a lot more of the 9s still out there than any of the earlier models. As cool as some of the really early color sets are, of the 50s color sets, I'd like to find the CTC-7, remote-controlled Worthington, most of all.
Sandy G 01-24-2012, 08:33 PM It also helps to be in a city/state that had color TV before 1970!
No Kiddin'...I THINK we had Color from 1965 onward, but not too many sets B4c. 1970...
ceebee23 01-24-2012, 08:49 PM some great looking sets here guys ...serious drool time.
BUT one thing that has always slightly puzzled me looking at the roundies is just what size rectangular screen do they approximate.
They seem to look quite large? 25"?
Pardon my iggoranz but on this side of the world we never actually see such rare beasties in the wild.
holmesuser01 01-24-2012, 08:52 PM I think they were something close to 19" diagonally.
They're called 21" tubes, presumably to be more-or-less equivalent to the 21" rectangular-ish b/w tubes that were probably the most common size b/w tubes in consoles of the time.
David Roper 01-24-2012, 09:56 PM The image size on a 21" round tube is probably close to that of a 24" rectangular (b&w) tube, the difference in measurement coming down to the presence or absence of the corners of the frame.
bozey45 01-25-2012, 03:46 AM This is my CTC-11; old photo, since this was taken it has a new tube with about 2 hours on it; just sitting in the garage covered up. Acquired in the 1980's from an engineer at the station I worked at for eons. It was the lobby set originally; great picture until it lost vertical output several years ago. Hope to get it going again one of these days.
zenithfan1 01-25-2012, 08:21 AM You guys have some great looking sets! Looks like I need to finish my 9 Anniversary set, 5 Wingate that now has a good 21AXP22! and my still working all original 4 Director 21.....Then I can post some pics. I still have obligations to members here that I need to take care of first. My life is upside down at the moment. But, I was able to get almost everything I wanted out of my house before it was all stolen (some was) and before the bank came and put a lock on the door.......wait....chotto matte yo! Nevermind:D There WAS a lock on the door, I unlocked it with my foot;3 Needless to say, tanoshiikata da na! Screw you Bank of America.
old_tv_nut 01-25-2012, 01:28 PM The image size on a 21" round tube is probably close to that of a 24" rectangular (b&w) tube, the difference in measurement coming down to the presence or absence of the corners of the frame.
Yes, 24 inch. NTSC raster is 3V:4H:5 Diagonal. The "21 inch" round tube is actualy 19+" viewable, so 19 x 5 /4 = 23.75 viewable.
Ralph S 01-25-2012, 03:46 PM Attached is a photo of my CTC-5U Chandler. The 21AXP22A is original to the set. It required full cap replacement and a number of resistor changes. Some tubes had to be replaced. All in all it's an excellent set and I love the color it produces.
Penthode 01-25-2012, 04:17 PM ... sneaking a CTC-9 through a window while the family slept was one of the greatest thrills of my life.
Was this how the set was acquired or how you had to bring the thing into your home after you acquired it?
tvtimeisfun 01-25-2012, 04:26 PM Hello every one of these roundies are very excellent I am glad that I am not the only 1 that enjoys these old bueaties thank you for helping on this thread keep the roundies coming and Happy Collecting... timothy
Theremin 01-25-2012, 06:41 PM 1957 Packard-Bell 21CC1.
David Roper 01-25-2012, 07:09 PM Holy moly, that Packard Bell is a gem! You should contact the Early Television Foundation ( [email protected] < [email protected]>) that it may be counted it in their database (http://earlytelevision.org/color_database.html).
earlyfilm 01-25-2012, 07:14 PM BUT one thing that has always slightly puzzled me looking at the roundies is just what size rectangular screen do they approximate.
They seem to look quite large? 25"?
Pardon my iggoranz but on this side of the world we never actually see such rare beasties in the wild.
You are very close!
Remember in the mid 1950's, they still measured the glass (or metal) envelope and not the viewable screen itself until the US government required that the measurement to be the viewable portion.
For instance, per RCA's 1957 spec sheet, on the original 21CYP22 that the Ampico-Kid mentioned on his 1959 Caufield, the outside envelope measures 20 and 13/16ths inch with a tolerance of + or - 1/8th inch. (The outside glass had to be over 20.5 to be counted as a 21 inch.)
The usable image area is 15 and 1/2 inch high and 19 and 1/4 inch wide, and since it is round, the actual diagonal is also 19 and 1/4 inch.
If this were compared in size to a rectangular image in modern diagonal width measurement this equals:
(15.5 squared) plus (19.25 squared) = square root of total
or just a smidgen over 24 and 1/2 inches diagonal, if it were a rectangle.
Hope this simplifies things.
droptop 01-25-2012, 08:29 PM A restored and working second version CTC 7 Grenoble with remote from 1959 and the 1961 CTC 10 Monticello as yet unrestored. I'll work on getting some better screen shots.
Sandy G 01-25-2012, 08:54 PM I just marvel...The folks in antebellum 1959 NEVER thought that their products MIGHT be obsolete in 2012..And didn't CARE if they were...They went ahead & did their damndest...And their products can still be viable 50-odd years later...Contrast that to today...All sorts of stories of DLP tVs losing their lights after 3. 4, 5, yrs of use...And they cost a king's ransom compared to the color overachievers of 1959...Shameful. This era impresses me NOT AT ALL...Except for its unrelenting CRAVENNESS, making everything cheaper & cheaper, NOT Better & Better...Or am i being a reactionary, backwards, inbred Redneck Old Poop, as usual ?!?
miniman82 01-25-2012, 09:41 PM HD (as we know it today) didn't exist back then, things are different now. Besides, we on this board make up for the fact that we watch modern sets by restoring the old ones. In that way, we hope to make up for the shame of watching modern plastic sets! lol

scrivener 01-26-2012, 01:03 PM Some incredible resolution from the '57 and '58 sets above. Some claim that the older the color set, the better the color rendering... but I remember the picture on my 1967 CTC-24A "Glenview" being far superior to anything that came out in the '50s... (when my set was still working, that is). I remember its excellent convergence (little to no stray color on B&W) and sharp focus.
Phil Nelson 01-26-2012, 01:08 PM Theremin, do you have a photo showing more of that room? I get the idea there are other interesting TVs on display (for instance, I spy the edge of a DuMont RA-103 in the Revere cabinet).

Aussie Bloke 01-27-2012, 01:50 AM 1957 Packard-Bell 21CC1.
You have an awesome rare collection of colour sets! :D
That Packard Bell set has some cosmetic characteristics similar to my 1959 HMV F5-A6 B&W set http://www.troysvintagevideo.741.com/hmv.html and many other Aussie made B&W sets made in the late 50s , the wood colour, the positioning of the knobs (except mine are at the bottom) and most notable the blue/violet/grey tint colour of the plastic bezel behind the safety glass. I notice that safety glass tint characteristic with quite a few vintage sets of the same era my friend John has http://cool386.tripod.com/ see this pic for example http://www.flickr.com/photos/13469158@N05/6170465871/in/photostream . I wonder if the colour is due to age of the glass?
Aussie Bloke 01-27-2012, 02:00 AM Great thread, love checking out those TVs, had I been living in the states knowing my luck of getting a hold of rare vintage TVs, cameras etc. I would of had a roundie for display:). But being in Australia and Australia not getting colour broadcasts till late 1974 we missed the roundie era so the odds of coming across one here is less than 1% compared to in the states but we did have a few used in colour demonstrations and training in the 60s so there's still a chance of getting one over here, I was lucky enough to get a 1947 Andrea VJ12 B&W TV chassis http://www.troysvintagevideo.741.com/andrea.html so knowing my luck I reckon I'll find me a roundie somewhere here or get enough dollars together to import one from the states :).

CTC5 The Chandler
Needs some light cabinet work. It looks better in person than in the pictures. I'm going to try to save the original finish. Missing the volume and brightness knobs, the high voltage cage cover (of course) and the back cover. Also needs a new "Deluxe" emblem on the front. Has the original 21AXP22 picture tube, which I have not yet tested.

etype2 12-15-2016, 04:14 PM A little holiday cheer.
When this thread started I did not own a single roundie. Now I own 4 sets. This is an RCA CTC-7 Worthington from 1958. In the corner was a 21CT55, buts currently being restored so we put a small Christmas tree in its place.
http://www.visions4.net/journal/wp-content/uploads/IMG_1694.jpg
Show us your early color sets. :-)
I thought I'd never find a roundie. But the TV Gods shined upon be, and I was blessed with a 1963 Admiral combo. Now just to get some RCA and Zenith roundies. Rare as hen's teeth in these parts.
Radiotronman 12-16-2016, 09:07 AM I posted this on my own thread when I first got it, but I thought I'd add it into this thread! It's my 1959 RCA CTC-9 Caulfield in near mint condition. I've yet to restore it, but will soon..

old_tv_nut 12-16-2016, 08:46 PM Here's the CTC-5.
Gory details:
This is a Super chassis, arguably the worst early 21 inch set RCA ever made. The design high voltage is only 18.5 kv, making it a real dim-bulb set. I used to have a 21FBP22 glass tube retrofitted in this set, which helped a bit with brightness. The current tube is a re-gunned 21AXP22, so it is the original tube with wide color gamut (especially the green), but it is even dimmer. Also, the particular 21FB that I had gave almost perfect convergence. This regunned 21AX seems to have the gun rotated slightly out of true. To get the corner convergence, you need to to rotate the convergence coil cloverleaf about 15 degrees. You would think this might ruin the purity, but it doesn't. However, I haven't looked at the beam landing with a microscope yet.
This set has been sitting for over a year without being tested since it was shipped from Illinois to Arizona. When I fired it up today, the only obvious problems was that the yoke had shifted and had to be pushed forward to get purity; plus, the red dynamic convergence is way off. [Oh, and the power cord got lost somewhere.] The corner convergence is affected somewhat by that apparent gun rotation. I will be doing some of that never-ending convergence chasing now, I see.
The color actually looks somewhat better in the photos than it does to the naked eye, except for the reflections from room lights. When I turned off the lights, you couldn't see the front of the cabinet. If I hadn't tried to to get this all done this afternoon, I could have fiddled with shooting the CRT with the lights off and superposing that on a good shot of the cabinet.
I will also post a pic with Christmas decorations on top over in that thread.
Edit: When I first fired it up today, the width was inadequate. I am running a variac into an isolation transformer with multiple taps. I found out that the direct side of the isolation transformer Where I have been plugging in the line meter does not have the same voltages as the isolated side. The middle tap is especially different; the high and low taps not so bad. So at that point I just cranked up the variac until I had full width. I will have to put together a two-prong power strip setup so I can plug the TV and the line meter into the same tap and see what I really have.

This was a gift from my Grandpa Burkhardt, the grumpiest old kraut to ever walk the face of the planet. He's a pain in the ass, but we love him and keep him around anyway :D
I saw the set on eBay, and unbeknownst to me, he tracked down the seller and offered to buy the set before the auction ended. I then paid to have it shipped from the SF Bay area back to Michigan. I then sold the set to another local collector to go on an ill-fated adventure with a CT-100. I sold the CT-100 to a fellow in Pennsylvania, made a tidy profit on that deal, and ultimately ended up buying this set back. I'll be six feet under when this Hoffman goes on the market again.
21AXP22 is good, the strongest I've ever actually seen, and the chassis is recapped. It's now passing good clean video, just have to track down some arcing HV cage.

An excellent example of why the I and Q axes were chosen - practically no Q axis details in that scene at all.

David, somehow, I hate you. No, just kidding. Very envious and a wonderful set, thanks for sharing the picture.
BigDavesTV 12-19-2016, 11:35 AM My only 1950's Color Roundie is my CTC-7B, "The Sanford" from 1958, it's the oldest (to date) color set that I have ever owned, or worked on. I still have to re-cap it, and replace it's CRT, hopefully this winter! I got it basically working, after I bought it from the original owner's Estate Sale, in Niles, MI, about two years ago. I had to replace burned open wires under the 5U4GB LV Rectifier sockets, and an open fuse. That got it going, but needs Electrolytics, and vertical and horizontal caps, as well as it's original and very tired 21CYP22 CRT. I was able to secure a good emission used 21CYP22, so it's on stand-by, waiting to be installed!

I think the CTC-7 "Sanford" model is one of the most beautiful 50's era color sets. It's compact consolette style with the louvre grill work below the screen was a perfect size for the average home. I hope you have the legs or can, at least, find replacements to complete this set.

Kamakiri 12-19-2016, 12:28 PM I absolutely loved the one I bought at ETF two years ago, but my wife ended up losing her job two months later, so off it went to another home :(
BigDavesTV 12-20-2016, 11:28 AM Thanks, Steve D. I do have it's legs, these pictures were taken right after I unloaded it from my pickup, before I cleaned it up, or did anything to it. The top of the set and really the whole thing, looked great after a good cleaning with Murphy's Oil Soap and warm water! The set came from it's original home, near a lake, but had been re-located to the walk-out basement, for years, after they got something newer for the Living Room. I got it basically working, then stopped, to wait for a CRT, before re-capping. About a year and a half later, I was able to do some "Horse Trading" and secure a good, original, used 21CYP22, I was glad, because I really didn't want to convert to 21FBP, in that set. So now, I have the CRT, I can soon begin the re-capping, then install and set up the replacement CRT. Hopefully, it will be one of this winter's "finished" projects, within the next few months!
Steve D. 12-20-2016, 12:54 PM Big Dave,
That's good news re: the legs.
Look forward to your progress reports on the Sanford. I had a chance to obtain this model which belonged to my long time friend, TV historian and collector, Ed Reitan.
After his passing, I and several others were cleaning out his collection, much of which went to the ETF. His CTC-7 Sanford sat against the wall and was mine if I wanted it. I had absolutely no room for it. I can't recall where it wound up. Perhaps at the ETF auction. Attached is a photo I snapped of the set as we were trying to inventory all of Ed's TV related items.

Kamakiri 12-20-2016, 01:03 PM I was the one who bought it at the convention. It's in Buffalo. Due to my wife losing her job at the time, I sold it for what I paid to my buddy Ed, a local collector (VK name roundscreen)...who has it completely restored and working well :)

Tim,
Thanks for reminding me. My memory isn't what it used to be. In fact, I now recall removing the Sanford's legs and packing them in the shipping crate for transport to Ohio. Wishing you and certainly your wife all the best, during this difficult time, in the new year.
Best

zenithfan1 12-20-2016, 08:54 PM Here's my 1959 RCA CTC9 Kenbridge. It's still not restored yet but will be by this coming summer. I found a like new remote control for it recently.
old_tv_nut 12-20-2016, 09:24 PM Someone sent me a message asking what model my CTC-5 is, and now I can't find the message.
It's a 21CT7885, Westcott (Super chassis) with mahogany finish.
The failed 21AXP22 that was in it, which had gone to air and turned out to have a leak in an unknown location after Scotty regunned it, was a replacement installed in 1962 according to a sticker on the back of the receiver. The leak was later found to be at a ding in the faceplate weld, by use of the helium leak detector at the ETF meeting a few years ago. The tube, which had to be necked to use the leak detector and was donated by me as a guinea pig to test the technique, is still at ETF, with hopes it can someday be both regunned and sealed.

Steve D. 01-02-2017, 06:45 PM Just acquired yesterday after a 700 mile round trip to California. My first '50s roundie :banana::banana::banana:
CTC5 The Chandler
Needs some light cabinet work. It looks better in person than in the pictures. I'm going to try to save the original finish. Missing the volume and brightness knobs, the high voltage cage cover (of course) and the back cover. Also needs a new "Deluxe" emblem on the front. Has the original 21AXP22 picture tube, which I have not yet tested.
Hi Volt,
About a year ago vintage TV collector & restorer Bob Galanter was offering
reproductions of the RCA "Deluxe" emblem. I've attached a photo of the one I purchased. Not sure if Bob still has any left. You can e-mail him at: [email protected].
Best,
-Steve D.

Walter really nice color on your 21CT55. Just wish you would take shots of the screen with the lights off or with light not shining on the screen. The glare ruins the contrast. Never the less, I can see you have great color rendition on your set.

I realized the problem and took some more with the lights off. It looks a lot better without the glare on the screen. They can be found at
