I'm curious as to what was the first set available in 10" or larger? I have a Sharp Aquos 13" (Model LC-13B4), which I am thinking is pretty early. Very heavy for a 13" flat panel set, no ATSC tuner, and no HDMI or DVI. Only component and standard video. It also has no internal power supply. Made in Japan (not other Asian countries).

I know that the first Plasma was introduced in 1997 with a 42-inch screen by Fujitsu for $14999.

i remember seeing a Sharp lcd tv reviewed in popular electronics in the early 90s. Never saw one in person though. About ten years older than the one pictured above.

Sharp had a hand-held LCD projector in the early 90s... I remember working on one that had been damaged in the '94 Northridge Earthquake, so that ensures the date as <1994. Was the one you saw in the magazine, a TV projector or flat screen TV?

I THINK I remember seeing LCDs "described" in Popular Science magazine back in the late '60s...Could be wrong, though...That's been slept on a few times...

The Sharp projectors with a single lens were out there already, but I remember the TV as being about a 14 inch, and costing an amount of money which explains how rare it is. The article with it said something to the effect that there was a very high reject rate with such large LCD panels at the time.

The first Sharp LCD was the Sharp Color 3ML 100BK CRYSTALTRON a 3 inch TFT model introduced late 1987. In June, 1988, Sharp demoed a prototype 14 inch color TFT and the first non pocket Sharp LCD TV to buy was a 8.6 inch wall mountable TFT color introduced in 1991.

Reading a little further on that page I see a claim about a refrigerator.

"Dual-Swing Door Refrigerator

Did they not know of Philco's V-Handle refrigerator from the 1950's?

To expand on this subject, The first LCD television was the Seiko TV watch in 1982. It came in two pieces the watch/display and the the receiver connected by a thin cable.

The second LCD TV was the Casio TV 10, a 2.7 inch black and white passive display in 1983.

The first color LCD TV was the Seiko T102 in 1984, a 2 inch and the first TFT LCD TV.

Prior to 1990, the largest LCD TV's were 4 inches, by Sony, Philips and a few others.

Sharp was the Company that pushed the envelope into larger LCD TV's. They were the first with a 5.6 inch color TFT TV and the 8.6 inch mentioned above. They continued introducing larger sizes first and eventually other company's caught up.

How do I Know? ... this old techno fart/geek was around buying them as they first came out. Stated collecting transistor radios in 1956, then TV's in 1960. :-) Probably more then you wanted to know. :-)

Back in the 90's,I use to attend the CES shows.One year (do not recall exactly,but thinking '95 or '96),Sony had a huge closed in demonstration area.They had a few prototype LCD 16x9 rear projection sets that were in the 40-50" range.

yup, I think it was Seiko that had the first B&W LCD in Popular Science....
