I've got a new favorite set in my collection. She's gorgeous! The finish isn't as nice as my 730TV1 but it's nice enough to leave alone after a wipe down with Howards. After peeking at the underside of the chassis I see that it's been partially recapped, but there's still some paper and possibly some electrolytics down there. I had hopped for a fully restored set but I guess I'll have to do some work before watching this one. I know that small table top sets are the traditional form factor of choice among collectors but I just love the big console cabinet-small screen sets. Now if I could just find me a TRK5 or TRK9:scratch2:...

I found it on Ebay and paid through the nose for it after it went unsold, then I paid through the nose to have some one bring it to me. It'll be here for gazing purposes if you come get the Mighty Monarch.

That one's mighty good looking also. The 802 has FM and AM, whereas the 801 only had AM. I'm really partial to the half doors on the 801, it reminds me of my other console, the 730TV1.

First set I picked up, local for 20 bucks 2 yrs ago. Was dead when I got it, radio now works, but having alot of problems with the tv section.
Been battling it on and off for 2 yrs now. I think alot of the problem lies in the tuner. I did ponder scraping it a few times.

The seller of this one told me it worked a couple of years ago which was a big part of me pulling the trigger. Hopefully with a simple recap she'll be back to her glory days.

I have the tabletop version, the 803 I think, it's a bit complicated and strange compared to most post war sets, I still haven't got mine working %100.

Kind of a nightmare to work on. Stu's comment on the tuner was true with mine-I wound up bypassing it and fed video direct to the output tube. There were a fair amount of changes made during the production of these sets, I've seen several different types of flybacks used, so they either blew up all of the time and were replaced, or GE sourced them from many different places.

I see in another post you are looking for a new power cord for your set, and that it uses a strange plug. I have never seen that type of plug used anywhere else except on these early GE sets, if that helps at all.

Actually the cord for this set was buried inside the cabinet so I don't need to find this one, but my other thread was more of a general inquiry also as a lot of my sets have power cords that are shot.

Seeing the state of preservation of that GE makes me smile! Nice to get an oldie that was preserved in great condition. Happy for you!! :yes: :banana:

Weren't these one of the very, VERY 1st sets in production, & maybe they were still trying to find out what REALLY "Worked" & what didn't ? And, this WAS the early postwar period- Shortages of all kinds of things were common then.

Quite a few shortages were on, you're right about that, Sandy. GE put out a few press releases explaining a delay in production because of a cabinet shortage.

Tires were almost impossible to get for awhile. A lot of early postwar cars were shipped w/o spares. Of course, cars themselves were VERY hard to get til really around late 1947-early 1948.

It would be real interesting to see some pictures of your chassis model, I would like to compare to my 802.

I'll take some chassis pictures in the future when I restore the set and definitely post them. I have another set ahead of it in line for restoration and I think you guys are going to love that one also. Stay tuned.
