venivdvici 11-05-2011, 05:39 PM I'm writing a novel about a teevee repairman circa 1961. You guys have been so helpful so far and I've stored away info you've already given me. Anyway, I wanted to include a routine color teevee repair job and stole some stuff I found on the web and tried to match it with some stuff I found in the vintage teevee repair books I bought. Does the following sound realistic? My main character is repairing Mrs. Amato's teevee in his shop.

The color set was a '58 RCA Anderson with a CTC-7C chassis, a heavy beast. It drew 380 watts of power and had over 22 kilovolts of zapping power. He had to be careful and couldn't tinker with it while Mrs. Amato tried to shove cookies and tea down his throat, so he brought it to the shop.
A few years earlier, she blew almost eight hundred bucks of her late husband's insurance on the new set and complained when all her shows weren't in color. He explained most shows weren't broadcast in color and she should save her money and return it for a nice black and white set. Nope. She wanted to be ready for the color revolution. She'd read in Life it was coming.
The problem was the image, though centered, was very small. As usual, he wore his sneakers and kept one hand in his pocket as he worked. He started by testing the tubes--twenty-eight of them!--and found a short in a filter capacitor. That blew one of the 5U4 rectifiers. After replacing the bad parts, the set worked good as new and he lived to talk about it.

leadlike 11-05-2011, 07:16 PM You could write that he was so annoyed by the owner or the children, that he elected to take it to the shop and do the repair there (for a higher fee), in spite of already knowing the simple fix needed for the set.
Mrs. Amato could also possibly degauss the picture tube with the vacuum cleaner running nearby, creating a swirling rainbow mess on the screen as she moved the sweeper back and forth.
Just a couple of ideas, hopefully helpful.

That would have been a waste of time as far as trouble shooting a power supply issue such as a small raster. He also would not have found a shorted cap by testing the tubes. The cap probably would not have been shorted, but leaky. This would load down the power supply and cause low B+ voltage. This would cause a small picture. A dead 5U4 would cause a dead set.
venivdvici 11-05-2011, 10:34 PM Thanks, but Mrs. Amato doesn't have children and I wanted it to be a real repair. I do like the swirling rainbow mess, but he would be able to see the interference on the spot if that were the case and he wouldn't bring the set in to the shop.

So if Mrs. Amato had a dead set, does that mean the power wouldn't come on? Or does it mean it clicks on but there's a black screen?
If there was no power (or is it low power?), would he take it into the shop? If so, what would he test/look at first? The 5U4? Thanks.
He tested all the tubes first, and found a shorted cap? I would not have spent time testing tubes that could not cause the problem. I wish I could hand you a scenario that would require benching a set, but I've never worked on other people's sets before so I don't have a good idea of what jobs could be done in home easily.

Of course, he might want to bring it back to the shop to see what's inside because he's not all that familiar with color sets. I've been flipping through my old teevee repair manuals and can't find this problem (or it's staring me in the face and I can't recognize it). How does he fix the poor purity problem? Thanks!

Cause 1: Power supply issue

Cause 2: Horizontal output "sweeps the CRT?" and generates the 20KV HV (high voltage?) and B+ supply used for vertical (and other circuits)
Task 1: Identify where the power problem is occurring.
or
Task 2: Identify the tube/s making the horizontal output sweep the CRT

The problem was the image, though centered, was very small. As usual, he wore his sneakers and kept one hand in his pocket as he worked. Well, first off i never knew a road techie who 'wore sneakers' specifically for electrical safety or kept one hand in pocket while working on a set in-home. I never knew one to routinely carry a tube tester into the home either. The test for a given symptom is to substitute the suspected tube(s).
But to address your specific scenario of a shrunken raster on the CTC-7, the very first thing the techie would know to do is substitute the 5U4s. But since there's no improvement, this indicates the 5U4s are not the problem. However the shrunken raster exhibits a hum bar, that is, a dark band that slowly scrolls vertically through the picture, accompanied by an S-bend in the sides of the raster that scrolls with it. This is the classic symptom of the main filter capacitor gone bad. The set would have to be shopped for this repair.
But note that the raster could not be "very small" and still display a picture. It would be pulled in maybe an inch or two from the sides along with the telltale hum bar.

To do a correct repair is a pretty involved process. It involves unsoldering multiple connections, untwisting the 'Twist-Lock' lugs that hold the capacitor can(s) in place, (sometimes) drilling out rivets, re-installing the new can(s) and re-soldering the leads back onto the correct section of the can (a single can can have up to four sections, designated A, B, C etc.). Although it `could` be done in the home, it would not be practical. Anything much beyond tube or fuse replacement was generally a shop job. Sometimes with a big heavy set or combo, the chassis was pulled to the shop, leaving the cabinet and pic tube in the home.
As for the sneakers and hand in the pocket, the repair manuals I have say to do that. If no one ever did that, I won't have him doing it!!!!
That's an obligatory precaution given to neophyte newbies and well worth the warning. But a seasoned techie such as depicted in your novel would not likely be seen working with one hand in pocket.:smoke: He might be wearing sneakers, but not specifically to avoid electrocution in the customer's home.

Once he was familiar with its layout, he found the problem--a dry C104-A and C015-A. He replaced the main filter capacitors, and the set ran good as new.

OK, the vacuum cleaner motor puts out a strong magnetic field which can magnetize the shadow mask in the pic tube. This causes the three electron beams passing through the shadow mask to incorrectly 'register' when they land. That is, they don't land perfectly on the correct phosphor dots, and partially illuminate the adjacent dots. This screws up the color purity. (For example, an all-red screen will have blotches of the wrong colors in it.)
The shadow mask can thus be said to be "gaussed" by the vacuum cleaner (or any other source of a magnetic field).
DEgaussing is done to restore the purity. It's done with a tool called a degaussing coil. It's a hoop about a foot in diameter with a momentary contact push-on button and a long cord that plugs into AC. There's a special technique (NOT the one shown in the UTube video !!!!!!). The coil is switched on while at least 6 feet away from the TV set. The coil is slowly brought in to the CRT face and moved around, and around the sides and top of the TV, then slowly moved back at least 6 feet away from the set before switching the coil off. If the coil is switched off while close in, it will "gauss" the CRT instead of degaussing it. (Also in the UTube vid, the guy switches the coil on directly in front of the CRT. Wrong!)
In the days before auto-degaussing (which didn't come until the CTC-16), the sets had to be degaussed every time they were moved, or even rotated 90 degrees, because even the Earth's magnetic field would disturb the purity.

One question: Does the shadow mask only apply to color sets? I figure that's the case, since we're talking about color.
I ask, because I was going to have another customer ask my main character Hunny (Gil 'Hunny' Hunnicutt) move her teevee set. This would be after he put in a wave-trap for an interference problem. She has rabbit ears, so I'd have him suggest an antenna, which he'd wire up through closets to her attic. (She finds outdoor antennae to be 'tacky'.) The mayhem of the story will happen with this customer who'll be kidnapped by an Albanian hit man in drag and the husband won't pay ransom. (Uh, it's not based on a true story.)

A shrunken raster, hum bar, and accompanying 'hourglass' bending. At her house, he tried replacing the two 5U4 power rectifier tubes, but that didn't fix the problem so he brought the set to the shop.
With Yoyo out of his hair, he pulled the heavy beastie's chassis. It had 28 tubes, drew 380 watts, and had over 22 kilovolts of zapping power. Once he was familiar with its layout, he found the problem-- the main filter capacitor had gone bad. He replaced the cap, a major job in itself, checked the rest of the tubes, cleaned the tuner and controls, re-installed the chassis, did a thorough degaussing and a complete convergence and purity set-up. He delivered the set back home and gave it a final in-place degaussing.
And the set ran good as new.

You probably have some interesting stories to tell about your house calls. I was thinking of having someone's pet snake or hamster get stuck in the chassis. I figured the customer would say the teevee doesn't work and it smells funny. Do you know if the pet inside would fry and die?

Found the cat had jumped in just before I set the cover in place.
Electronic M 11-06-2011, 08:11 PM Some thing like a snake is long enough to touch the chassis and at the same time easily hit an above chassis B+ post and get electrocuted to death.
Most companies had circuit boards then which may have buged the snake enough to keep the critter safe (pokey test points and lots of small above chassis components), but someting like a Zenith or a Packerd Bell which had no circuit boards....Many of these 100% hand wired sets by that time used chassis mount terminal strips that could be accessed above chassis (Zenith REALLY liked useing these) often placing several B+ terminals easily touchable above chassis where that snake could comfortably get to them.

wa2ise 11-06-2011, 08:39 PM Over in Audiokarma's tube audio forum, someone had an audio amp that had a dead mouse inside it. Said mouse had crawled under the chassis inside the amp, and found some internally exposed powerline voltage, and thus was electrocuted. This was at some terminal strips (metal posts attached to a phenolic plastic strip) with bare wire connections feeding the powerline to the amp's power transformer. Before the mouse bought the farm it had chewed some wax off nearby wax paper capacitors. This audio amp could easily have been that color TV set in your novel.
Electricians occasionally find fried mice and snakes inside circuit breaker panels. Tends to be stinky and yucky...

So the snake would touch the chassis and an above chassis B+ post. I see B+ a lot. I wish I knew what a B+ post was. Does it have another name?

Some thing like a snake is long enough to touch the chassis and at the same time easily hit an above chassis B+ post and get electrocuted to death.
Most companies had circuit boards then which may have buged the snake enough to keep the critter safe (pokey test points and lots of small above chassis components), but someting like a Zenith or a Packerd Bell which had no circuit boards....Many of these 100% hand wired sets by that time used chassis mount terminal strips that could be accessed above chassis (Zenith REALLY liked useing these) often placing several B+ terminals easily touchable above chassis where that snake could comfortably get to them.

If you get into all the details of deguassing the set or changing specific tubes your reader's eyes will glaze over. Have the woman complain and discribe the symptons and your experienced hero TV repair guy do a quick diagnosis, explain the problem, what ever you come up with, and pull the chassis. Hell, it could be the "fringe area localizer switch" for all the woman knows. She just wants it fixed and he wants out of that house.

I'm writing it from the repairman's POV, and since I'm waaaaay out of my element with vintage teevee repair (but I think it's way cool anyway), I want a sentence or phrase here or there for color. I just want it to be correct, that's all. The repairman would look at a set and identify the exact model in his head, I think. Then again, you'd know that best!
Right now you taught me the phrase "bench job" which I take to mean he's gotta spend time testing to diagnose the problem. You taught me there's an acrid scent to burnt tubes. I didn't know that.
I'm not above making things up. Heck, the location I'm using is made up. But I don't really want to make up television repair details. I think it's cooler when real details are provided.

That seems true. I would make the symptom a simple rolling vertical hold, the repairman knows it's a sync tube, but he doesn't have a spare in his caddy. Rather than appear incompetent, he takes the chassis into the shop. Then he sends his least-favorite co-worker out later to put the chassis back in, to distribute the tea-n-cookie torture evenly.

Exactly. I never said burnt tube produces an acrid scent. As Accumulator said the acrid scent or smell is from an electrical short or rubber insulation or a resistor or any number of other toxic components in a television chassis. A "bench job" means that the chassis is taken back to the shop and put on the work bench to be repaired.

You are right of course. In my little rewrite of the author's text, i was trying to accomodate his expressed interest in the technical stuff and having it correct. He then has the option to dial the dialog back to suit the average reader's interest level.

Over in Audiokarma's tube audio forum, someone had an audio amp that had a dead mouse inside it. Said mouse had crawled under the chassis inside the amp, and found some internally exposed powerline voltage, and thus was electrocuted. This was at some terminal strips (metal posts attached to a phenolic plastic strip) with bare wire connections feeding the powerline to the amp's power transformer. Before the mouse bought the farm it had chewed some wax off nearby wax paper capacitors. This audio amp could easily have been that color TV set in your novel.
Electricians occasionally find fried mice and snakes inside circuit breaker panels. Tends to be stinky and yucky...

Radio news, later radio and television news, then radio and tv news, then electronics world, was a ziff-davis magazine the 20th century. It was targeted at tv and radio service people, as well as people with a general interest in electronics. Any major city university technical library will likely have back issues.. Or maybe a public library can get it on microfiche.

Technical books may be more to the point, but they are usually more dry, and don't contain the "human" element like magazines do. I think considering what you are trying to do, knowing a bit more about the "human" element would work well for you. Particularly things like how business was conducted, what customers expected, what a service call consisted of - the layout of a shop, the general demographic and social status of a repair man, etc. A bit of research will bring all this stuff into clear focus.

Oh, if a tube radio or TV set hasn't been operated in a long while, dust accumulated on its tubes will produce a weak burnt smell, very similar to the smell you get when you turn the house heat on first time a cold snap happens in Autumn. The dust on the radiators making the smell. But the tubes for the most part don't care, they will operate just fine. Unless the dust is literally 1/8 inch or more thick...
As for the faulty filter caps, about ten years ago there was some industrial spying one cap company in Taiwan I think it was, had stolen what they thought was the competitor's secret recipe for the special sauce used to make capacitors. And they started using it to make their caps. Only problem was what they stole was a recipe for some research and development cap experiments that did not contain materials to extend cap lifetime, maybe so the lab scientists of the competitor company had intended to test various new such materials to add to the recipe that was stolen. The evil spying and stealing company made lots of faulty caps that ended up in things like computer motherboards and power supplies, causing a lot of early failures in several major computer companies' products... This could easily have happened in the USA back in the 50's, as people around the world are more similar in most respects than the small stuff like what they look like or like to have for dinner.
old_coot88 11-08-2011, 09:17 AM There was one filter cap problem endemic to the CTC-25 chassis (and possibly the CTC-17 also, though I never saw it in a '17) that tended to crop up when the sets were just out of warranty. A multi-section can had a 680 (possibly 560) ohm, half-watt resistor between two of its lugs. The sets would come in with that resistor smoked. Turns out that one section had gone bad, allowing a large ripple voltage to appear across the resistor that overwhelmed its wattage rating.

If I had been called out for a shrunken picture, I'd have first measured the household electrical outlet to see if the voltage was low (a common problem at that time). There is a switch on many early color TVs to compensate for a low line voltage, in fact. Next I'd have tried swapping the two 5U4 tubes, and if that didn't fix it, I'd put the originals back, and then troubleshoot the power supply and have then found the bad filter capacitor. This would have involved unbolting the chassis from the cabinet, and sliding it part way out to get at the bottom (or actually the side, as that TV had the chassis mounted upright inside the right-hand side of the cabinet; not on the bottom as most sets were then).

As for the Philippines, I have nothing against the place nor RCA. I just picked the Phillippines out of the blue to be the country to have made the fictional defective caps. I'll use your suggestion for that, too.

However, most road techies would routinely give all the tubes the 'tap test' to reveal any borderline intermittents and arcing damper tubes (a very common problem). Weak tubes could often be identified by turning the set off for about 10 seconds and then back on. A lag in horizontal lock-in would reveal the oscillator tube becoming weak, a lag in color sync lock-in showed a weak color osc. tube, slow width fill-out showed a borderline horiz output tube, etc. For house calls the old adage was that the set itself is the best "tube tester".
But in the shop, all the tubes were routinely tested on a tester unless the customer specifically requested a cut rate.

A road techie was a guy doing house calls. In the truck he would carry a toolbox, tube caddy, often a second caddy of lesser-used tubes, a dot/crosshatch generator, mirror and stand, degauss coil, and furniture blankets and ropes for transporting sets to and from the shop.
When big consoles and combos weren't fixable in the home, some shops preferred to pull just the TV chassis and take it to the shop. We generally took the whole unit rather than pull the chassis. I think that's why I got a bad back today. :(:tears:
Being a road guy generally required a lower skill level than a shop tech. But most shop guys would work in both roles as needed. Then there were the "dog shooters" - hotshot techs who specialized in the really tough troubleshooting jobs from other shops.

kvflyer 11-12-2011, 10:55 AM I don't remember many of the names above. But I do remember my dad talking about "Tough Dogs". I looked in some of the old PF Reporter or Radio Electronics books (can't remember which one) and there was a tech section that was called something like "Tough Dogs". Surely, some of you guys remember.

My favorite saying, of which I'm the author, is: If it's not worth doing twice, it's not worth doing.
I always have to do things twice, it seems.
I'll add to the above point. The reason I made the suggestion above, is if you spend about a month or two making Radio & TV news bed time reading, you will essentially get into the head of a mid 20th century TV service man. They had articles on running a business, articles on new products, articles on how to test things, "tough dog" repairs. It's basically a slice of the whole industry. The Mac's column was a narative about a fictional repair shop where "Mac" would solve a couple tough repairs, with the help of his teenage assistant "Barney", and they would banter about current issues in TV/Radio repair, along with some corny material about Barney's girlfriend, or some sexist comments about female customers. It filled about a page to a page and a half, in every issue of Radio&TV news through the 50s. And the advertisements are a huge source of info too, giving more insight into what was going on at the time.
Technical books may be more to the point, but they are usually more dry, and don't contain the "human" element like magazines do. I think considering what you are trying to do, knowing a bit more about the "human" element would work well for you. Particularly things like how business was conducted, what customers expected, what a service call consisted of - the layout of a shop, the general demographic and social status of a repair man, etc. A bit of research will bring all this stuff into clear focus.

That's because most neighborhood techs claimed they'd work on color sets, but in fact many times, they'd get themselves in trouble. RCA had a service fleet in most all cities, and also many, MANY RCA sets were kept under annual service contracts, and only RCA techs would be allowed to work on the sets under that policy.
This isn't exactly important in the case of your writing, I guess, but I thought it's worth mentioning.

That's all correct. Our store was the authorized RCA (as well as DuMont/Emerson) sales and service dealership in our little hick town (Globe, AZ). But being far removed from major cities, we were late getting into color, and didn't get into it until 1964 with the CTC-15. We went to the factory-sponsored RCA School in Phoenix to learn the mysteries of color.
The truck was a '61 Ford Econoline van. A couple of us goofballs used to think it was a hoot to be going down a hill and shut the ignition off for a few seconds and back on, which caused a huge BANG!!! out the exhaust, till one day we blew the muffler off.
