I was going for a walk at lunchtime the other day and spotted this on the curb, just had to rescue it... it's a Sony KV-1929R that someone decided to give some "bling" by painting it gold. They covered the Trinitron logo but otherwise deliberately skipped painting over text, leaving those parts gray. They also left the woodgrain plastic sides and black plastic back unpainted. I don't know if the Sony logo was removed on purpose or just fell off at some point.

I got it home and tried it out, it works perfectly. I wasn't too surprised at that.

So I'm thinking of maybe trying to strip off the paint, then covering it with something interesting. Any ideas? Or should I just leave it as is?

Those were good sets. I used one, that was a rescue from a TV shop who was about to toss it, for many years and it was still working fine when I sold it a few months back. All it needed when I got it was a fuse and a bridge rectifier.

Who would do a damfool thing like THAT, in the 1st place ?!? Some people just shouldn't be allowed to own such things...Or breed...Or vote...

i had one of those as a garage watcher.best damn picture i ever saw.it was amazing.i let it go and repalced with a zenith system 3 from 1977 remote console.that sony was awesome and i miss it!

Looks more like massive amounts of tartar rather than paint. Someone apparently doesn't like the gray.

If that Sony had been at my mom's house in the 1980's, it would have been gold. She painted everything gold then. It all matched the couches and chairs in the living room. At Christmas, she painted big pine cones gold, too.

I'm not much on gold painted stuff.

My pops still watches a kv-2729R bought new in 1987. Never once needed a repair.

And yes I've seen the metal SONY badge fall off some sets, it was glued on most of the time and new glue fixes it perfectly(i use liquid nails)

I have a nice pre-war Airline table set that some one painted green and gave a military look to. I have yet to try my hand at cabinet work, and sort of like the paint job so I've left it alone.

You can't tell from the photo but it's brush-painted, not sprayed! The gold paint is nice and thick. :D

Oh bling bling! It doesn't surpise me that the set still puts out an excellent picture, that Sony was Sony's heyday and the CRT's held up well. Someone scrapped it for a flatscreen I bet.

Migurushii da yo. Too bad someone painted it. Krylon makes paint for plastic so you could re-do it and make it cool. For free, I'da picked it up too though.

Looks the same as the KV-1926 that came with my wife and is a daily watcher. She bought it as a floor model and has it held up well. I've only needed to replace the main filter cap, and touch up the solder joints on the flyback. Gets used hours every day. The CRT is getting a little tired and sometimes the flyback sings. A good wrap usually makes it quiet for a month or so. The flyback issues are probably my own fault, as it is the only TV I've inadvertently dropped. (Of course there been others, but that another story.)
