I don't know if there are any service techs or people more connected than I on this forum, but I'll ask around anyway.

I've got a Samsung Blu-Ray player that apparently has a bad Blu-Ray laser..it's a dual-layer rig and will still read DVD's, just not Blu-Ray. Anyway, if i can fix this thing cheap I'll be all set for when I get a 3DTV...but I'm having problems figuring out if there are any other compatible units other than what's in the thing already...which isn't available on ebay and if i could get it new would cost around $100.

I won't bore anyone else with all the details, but, if you might be able to help me, let me know and I'll get to postin.

Sorry for posting this in what appears to be a TV thread...it was the closest thing I could find for any kind of modern video equipment.....and I don't get out of AK very much. :)

youll need to replace the pickup, youll have to pull a part number off of the pickup assembly and try to find it. if no avail, your out of luck. sorry.

You might be able to get a new one from Samsung or a parts vendor but it might be cheaper to pick up a used unit rather than fixing yours.
Plus if the Laser doesn't fix it you're out the money spent on it.
I would assume there is some calibration required when replacing such a part?

I recently bought an essentially new 2010 model Panasonic Bluray player at a local Auction for $30 so deals are out there.

usually no calibration, its drop-and-go. But on most occasions you will have to remove the solder ball that shorts out the diode, for ESD reasons.

There's kriptonite in there.......... oh, wait that stuff's green.......nevermind.

Your best bet might be to look for a used or refurbished player from the same model year that is not 3-D ready (such as a BD-C5500 if your player is a BD-C5900 or '6500, for example), and swap the whole drive between them. Likely, the drives are all the same within any model year. Whole (but good) players will probably be cheaper than the replacement part.
