I bought this Sony KV-1311CR new about 25 years ago and have used it almost daily since then. The photo shows a problem it just developed -- slanting sort of herringbone (?) patterns all over the screen.

Any ideas where to start? I'm familiar with 1940s/1950s TVs, but this kind of new-fangled rig is mysterious to me.

The first thing I'd look at would be the filter cap that's in the B+ line that feeds the video output stage. This source will likely be off the flyback and the cap will likely be somewhere between 4.7 uf and 22 uf with a voltage rating of at least 200 volts. If that's not it, check the other caps in the main power supply and the caps off the flyback.

And I assume you've eliminated the obvious... bad dtv converter,cable connection? Does it have the issue when using a VCR or DVD player?
I did have 1 set with that problem that wasn't the above, and it was the tuner.

Yes, the interference pattern is also there when I switch to Video input and play a DVD. It seems to be independent of program material. It's present even if I pause the DVD and there is no audio.

The photo was taken receiving a signal from my in-house transmitter with rabbit ears.

I'll haul out some equipment and start poking around. It guess it wouldn't be startling if an electrolytic (or several) gave out after so many years. I do have a cap checker (EDS-88A). There are lots of electrolytics in this set.
